  1. Yellowfin whiting are a warm weather species so they leave once the temperatures starts to drop, normally when the crabs and flathead start to disappear the yellowfin will follow suit. During the colder months the king george whiting and salmon tend to move closer inshore and become more accessible to the land based anglers. Not sure on adelaide waters as I live on the spencer gulf but from the sounds westlakes would be good or hitting up a local beach for some salmon trout, put a bait rod out and you could pick up a king george or two as well
  2. Evening gents, Just wondering what is everyones most memorable catch? It can be saltwater, freshwater, big or small Mine would be a few years back now when I caught my first eagle ray, I'd gone out camping with a friend to fitzgerald bay just above whyalla and we spent the morning catching a few yellowfin whiting and a nice flathead off a spot right infront of our campsite then went spearfishing and collected quite a few scallops and razorfish, that night we put a few more lines out only to end up catching a few shitties so we went back to the camp site and started to have tea, I ended up cas
  3. Any metal slug from 5-60g, prefer hot pink, pearl white or dark blue for colours
  4. I've been using fireline off the beach for quite a while now and have found it alot better compared to mono, stick a simple fluorocarbon leader on the end and theres no trouble with sand abrasion or anything similar. With your set up you could probably drop down to 20lb braid though, plenty strong enough to handle most fish you'd hook and you'd have more on the spool for anything big that did come along
  5. My personal favourite all rounder gear is a shimano symetre 4000 (might be 3000 though I'm not sure) spooled with 20lb braid attached to a shimano raider mexican fire II snapper 702. Use it for my whiting fishing, squid fishing, snapper fishing, salmon fishing and even works well putting a float on the end going for tommies. Biggest I've caught so far on it was an 11.5kg eagle ray
  6. Back when I was younger we'd use those little gummy snake things as bait, picked up whiting and tommies on them
  7. For the head torch I use one of these, its a cheap rechargeable headlight bright enough for anything you need doesn't cost you anything in batteries and at 15 dollars a pop doesn't matter if you lose one or it breaks, I've had mine for about 2 years now and hasn't been faulty or anything. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rechargable-Led-head-lamp-15-led-bulb-/300648533769?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item46000c8f09&_uhb=1 As far as if you want light the entire night buy yourself a rechargeable lantern or a camping lantern, to stop it from scaring the fish off place your lantern against a b
  8. Bread, berley pellets (whiting pellets etc), cockles, squid, beef heart or liver, steak and funnily enough chicken flavored twisties They can be rather finicky at times though, I've been out fishing in an estuary near where I live before and catching KGW to have 2 massive mullet (Seriously, I thought they were salmon at first the way these two were built) come up to the berley bag and just hang around, no matter what bait I used they wouldn't take it even though they happily took any scraps of berley that the crabs managed to miss
  9. Heres a link to a thread I posted in a while ago about how to cook eagles http://www.strikehook.com/index.php/topic/21673-eating-eagleblack-rays/?p=242295 just down from that post I think I had some information about preparing the meat as well the bad review which some people seem to give to rays is nonsense in my opinion cooking a ray is just as easy as cooking any fish (Actually its even easier when you take into consideration you don't have to gut it or remove any bones) Soak it in milk for an hour before cooking to remove any ammonia taste although I haven't found much difference between
  10. I have a medium wheel based 4wd which I regularly have 12 foot surf rods on and have never had a problem from cops, as long as its properly secured and not hanging too far back or infront you should be alright
  11. These sunsets remind me why I love fishing so much
  12. Its legal to use it on the old rod and line as others have stated and you could also give beef heart or liver a try as I used to use this when I was younger and the fish absoloutely loved it
  13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWJCxIl1wSkNice little video about whiting on poppersfrom memory what I was told about targetting the whiting on a popper is look for a nice sand flat, put out a bit of berley and explore the area with the popper any whiting that are near by will more then likely come to have a bit of a look at what the action is about.Mostly clear or white with a red head is the best colour choice for the whiting.Snook your best chance is probably going out to the rocks and spinning a few lures. Also heard about guys going on the jetty with a squid strip with 2 ganged hooks and
  14. your berley washing ashore shouldnt be a problem with an outgoing, the only thing you'd have to worry about is the waves receding back far enough that your pot is out of the water. A simple berley pot (can be an orange sack or hessian sack as well) tied to rope would do for the pot. To make sure it doesn't float away put some sinkers or rocks in the bottom and it'll hold on the bottom.Rod holders for the beach don't have to be complicated, I've used pvc pipe for years with success as long as the sand is relatively soft you shouldn't have a problem getting it in the ground. And if you don't hav

  16. this is why having access to the internet is dangerous for me on paydays
  17. Good recipe mate but a little tip to save more burnt fingers in the future is to check if the oil is at roughly 180 degrees cut a small cube out of bread shaped like a crouton and put it in the oil, if it browns off in 5 seconds the oil is roughly 180 degrees. no wasted squid and alot safer for the old fingers I'm a chef by trade as well and alot of chefs cut the squid like that before cooking, helps it cook more evenly and makes it a bit more tender.Touching on the subject of the corn flour if you use a half mixture of both self raising/plain flour and corn flour you'll actually come out wi
  18. are the pelagics on ebay?I don't mind the action of the melalukas so far but I haven't actually taken one out on the water and given it a shot yet so haven't seen the corrosion issue yet.Are the pelagics similarly priced as well?
  19. Butterworth I had was amazing on the smoothie, Can't wait for the weather to warm up and get back out there for an eagle of similar size. The smooth ray I caught is the one in my avatar.ended up measuring 6'1" with a 4'8" wing spanthe height of the backbone was a solid 14" depthseen some cracking photos of some large eagles around on the siteThe gaff infront of the ray in the photo is roughly 5'1" in length
  20. Some brilliant photos there mate, looks like a good day.Gotta love when you chance upon a school of ST's, not bad for eating and not to mention amazing baitWait until you hook your first 6lb+ salmon you'll be in for a bit of fun on light gear :woohoo:
  21. Yeah ifish is alot of adverts, hooked is quite big on the adverts as well but not as bad as ifish.hook line and sinker does quite a bit of adverts but I don't view it as strictly a fishing show like adventure bound or hooked, they tend to do alot of different things so I view it as a generalized fishing show. Wasn't really a fan of the remote controlled fishing boat with the reel, just didn't find much viewing pleasure in it.the lads on there enjoy a good laugh though and are always taking the mickey out of eachother so its quite a good show for a bit of entertainment. Love when they went out
  22. How could I forgot river monsters and old robson. I recently bought 3 of the 5 seasons of robson green and have up to season 3 of river monsters.Love the one where robson comes to australia and the guy keeps throwing the crabs at him and touching his ankles, his reaction is classic.Just been sat here watching river monsters as well, One about the giant freshwater sting ray.Yeah thats the one, youfishtv not bigfish. I think the youtube channel is called bigfishtvI forgot to add as well utlimate fishing with matt watson is a pretty good show, has some good tips and some nice fishing in there. One
  23. Won't let me edit this into the first post but
  24. What fishing shows is everyone into watching?I personally like adventure bound, hook line and sinker, 2dans and the bigfishtv series on youtube isn't bad, I think a bloke called winga runs that one.Hooked is also a rather good show but its a bit slow paced for me sometimesWhats everyone into?
  25. Yeah I ordered one of the overhead ones off ebay to have a try with, looks like the ones on there might be cheap chinese knock offs though. Would be good for a first try though, got one off there for now and if I like the feel of it I'm gonna look for one of the us sites that sell them. As far as I can see the ones in the videos above are the american made ones they retail for around 25 dollars not sure on postage thoughApparently the biggest fish someones caught on them was about a 15lb bass so if they can handle that they must be a decent set up.Should start a pen rod record on the site
