  1. Ok seeing I’ve dusted this reel off and the weather is not great . Silly question years ago I had probably still have a shimano reel size 750. Are there any reels smaller than 1000 around . And I know there’s a size difference between Diawa and shimano the Laguna 1000 is tiny compared to my shimano sienna 1000.

    I've had the same problem with several Daiwa reels ( Exceler, Fuego, Legalis ) and had them repaired at a tackle store in Devonport at a cost of $90-00,  every one of those reels was due the bail arm not flicking back. The problem with every one of the reels was because the bail trip levers were made of a soft alloy that breaks at it's narrowest point. Even after having them repaired two of them have got the same problems again after three trips to the river while trout fishing. So those reels are now in their original boxes and that's where they're staying. The only Daiwa reel that I've never had a problem with is the Revros spinning reel which still gets used once a week during the trout season. Over the past four years I've been using the Okuma spinning reels and thankfully never had a problem with them to date.

    Thanks for that

    Yeah things are made to break these days - its part of every good business plan😉 And noone seems more enthusiastic about applying the theory than fishing reel manufacturers ;)

    A light bulb that lasts for 50 years - only needs to be repurchased once every 50 years - but if you make them last a couple of years - then you can sell a hell of alot more bulbs.

    There an intersting doco on "Planned Obsolescence". Its starts with the light bulb - they actually had to work bloody hard to get them to break sooner😮

    Thanks for that

    Ive had very mixed experiences with Daiwa's service department Ranging from 6 months waits - reels being sent back with the problem not fixed but fully charged - reels being sent back with a part missing and them not apologising or taking any responsibility and telling me to send my reel back to them so they could confirm it was their fault - which would cost more than the part was worth ............. but on my last interaction, a new guy sent me a bearing, free of any charges, even though I explained it wasnt their fault.

    I have a suspicion that the reel you send them, governs the level of service you receive. High end reels seem to get a better level of communication and care.

    I have found Penn and Shimanos service departments to be much more humble and accommodating. Especially when they make an error like sending you the wrong part.

    These days I try to fix as many problems I can by myself - the price of spare parts and postage is a bit steep - $10 postage on a $7 plastic washer that weighs less than a gram when you buy direct from Diawa, is a bit much - especially when their service department forgot to put it back in when servicing it and wouldnt take responsibility for it- but its cheaper than sending my reel back in and waiting for them to get around to fixing it.

    I get the impression that if a local tournament angler - a sponsored angler - a mate of a mate - a relative - or a social media guru shows up and wants their stuff looked at - guess whos reel goes to the back of the queue. Their understaffed service department will get to your reel when there's nothing better to do.

    I always grin when I hear sponsored guys or valued customers talk about the great level of service they get from service departments.

    Ive seen first hand what happens when a valued customer walks into a boat mechanics and plonks a whole heap of problems on their desk - they down tools on what ever job they were on - charge that time to the other client, who's boat they were working on - and get it done.😉

    So in short - its only worth sending the reel off if you have the time to wait and cant work out how fix it yourself.

    I was actually thinking the amount of money I paid for the reel under $100 don’t  recall exactly maybe $75 or less .  Was it worth getting fixed if we factor in postage . Then I remembered the 1000 which is smaller than my shimano sienna 1000 I thought new braid might be the way to go .

    Now I looked at the Laguna 2500 bail arm and my exceller 2500 bail arm . No wonder the exceller cost me the same amount as the Samaki rod I’m using . Big differences Laguna 2500 casts further than the exceller but exceller is made with better parts it looks.

    The old sienna 1000 label is peeling off but still performs fantastic .

    hmm guess I’m saying the repair can wait

    hopefully the bulk braid on the 1000 Laguna than the J8 braid did on the 25000 Laguna had lots of issues with it

  5. Ok after my newest Diawa Laguna reel 2500 size had a malfunction with the bail arm to get it fixed . Need to mail it off is it worth it money wise . So I dusted off the same model from many years ago 1000 size so tiny got her spooled up with 5 lb braid this morning I had a dream before my TBI bigger fish on smaller lighter gear . See if I can do that now ! I’ve noticed again this size 1000 is smaller than shimano sienna 1000.

    I've got a river 2 sea killer vibe. The early one with stainless hooks and a barrel swivel on each hook. At 10 years old it has very little paint left. What type of paint does one use?

    Knackers never painted a lure . But 12 or more years ago I was salt water fly fishing . Now I wasn’t a great fly tier but I found a design on a page . It used a product that was used in the building industry from hardware stores a bit better than foam . I’d tie that and whatever else on and had an idea I’d paint nail polish on the building product . It worked on these surface flies landing me legal bream they loved green nail polish colour from the cheap shop

    not sure it helps but I guess nail polish is enamel like

  7. Wow DES . I have landed whiting on lures not many but sometimes they go off like marlin jumping around . Mullet believe it or not fight really well on lures mind you biggest I’ve got is around 20 cms in west lakes and Patawalonga. Now that picture of lures top right slightly darker base colour with same lines mullet love as do STs . Now I started after bait on salt water flies then hardbodies then plastics back to hardbodies . Now I’m not the greatest fly fisher gave that up what I noticed with bream in west lakes and I was wading on windy mornings choppy water they loved surface flies I’d tied with a building material that made them float painted green with nail polish . Not sure if they’d work elsewhere though .  Which brings me to you saying about fish learning. There are lures I’ve had and some I still have . Now what I’ll say might be strange and it doesn’t or hasn’t always been correct . What I’m trying to say some lures will land me bream STs ect in the Patawalonga but not get a touch in west lakes . However before I’m told I’m wrong I’ve lost some lures like double clutches that did n fact work in both water ways . I bought as a clearance sale item a double clutch grey on top light grey white underneath bream mullet at the Patawalonga and mullet in west lakes . Now the bottom colour one day when using a plastic accidentally hooked a tiny bait dish belly colour matched that double clutch . And we all know I do like black lures these do work in both including on a dodge tide in the lake when school mulloway ripped the trebles off ! But I’ve also have so many lures that STs attack in the Patawalonga but bigger salmon won’t look at in west lakes . Now plastics please everyone who uses them don’t just use motor oil please try other colours because sometimes motor oil won’t catch a fish .

    Thank you DES for sharing and letting me ramble . I think tackle shop people hate me I study any lures before I purchase them colour being the biggest seller !

    And my thoughts on plastics got me banned on a Facebook page years ago lol

  8. Ok I’ve bought a Samaki Zing generation 3 it’s not the 1-3 kilo when you convert from pounds to kilo I believe it’s 1-2 kilo only 6ft 10 but longer than the aird rod I’ve been favouring . So tomorrow I’ll give it a flick . It does feel really great . Guess seeing it’s my birthday this month an early birthday 🥳 present

    Savage Gear Black Savage 1-3kg 6’6”

    Daiwa Tierra 702LXS 1.5-3kg 7’0”

    Atomic ArrowZ Estuary 2-6lb 7’0”

    All of these four rods will suit your style of lure flicking. All graphite, lightweight etc and mid-range price point.

    Ok I looked at 2 Samaki rods saw the zing one second but liked the 6ft 10 samaki can’t recall the name now but I liked the lightness

    Hi Micky. If you were prepared to go secondhand check the local Adelaide TackleBox secondhand site. Every now and then a great rod comes up at an even greater price. Regards, HBt.

    Thanks HB I’ll keep that in mind

    That Tierra would probably suit you best, LXS=

    L = Light

    X = eXtra Fast action

    S = Spin

    ie a whippy light tip but more guts near the handle. I've landed 50cm salmon on it but it's light enough in the tip to feel tiny bites.

    Thanks Soobz I can’t get to look today but I’ll remember this one sounds great

    The rods state 2-6lb rating which converts to roughly 0.9kg-2.7kg. Which will be exactly like a rod that states a 1-3kg rating. Some companies prefer to put their ratings in pounds (lb.) because most commonly, fishing line is rated in pounds (lb.) so it makes it easier for the angler.

    Ok I can’t take a picture of what the Aird rod says

    model number 662LFS-DA 6’6”lure 2-8 kilos line 1-3 kilos

    That’s the type of new rod I’m after maybe a little taller at 7

    What two are too heavy? 6LB is only 2.7kg 🤔

    I want a rod that says 1-3 kilos on it same as the Daiwa Arid I’ve had for 10-11 years stopped using it went to 2-4 kilos . I want a light weight rod that says on it 1-3 kilo they seem whipper than 2-4 kilo rods I own .

    hope that explains it I want to land bigger fish on a 1-3 kilo rod using light weights lines currently using diawa J8 braid with 4 lb fluorocarbon leader and it works great on the Daiwa aird 1-3 kilo rod

    Thanks 2 are to heavy for my needs I have 2-4 kilo rods as well . I somehow like the 1-3 kilo arid rod . Once I’m ready I’ll have to check them out I never buy a rod without seeing it thanks again

  18. Now I am using again my first lure flicking rod a Daiwa Arid 6ft 10 1-3 kilo rod works well . I’m told I’m getting a gift card for Xmas so I’ll use it and pay the rest I’m looking for a rod 7ft 1-3 kilo no heavier any ideas and not $600  worth either . I had a dream many years ago bigger fish on lighter gear . I was sold a rod near that but not as good as the old arid rod . Any clues guys

  19. Ok I walked to both BCF and Anaconda. I looked at a savage blade at BCF liked the colour but the weight looked to heavy 6 or 8 grams from memory.  Anaconda I looked at strike pro blades then TT blades bought a TT 1/8 looked smaller probably size I was looking for . The ones that were recommended above I’ll still look for those but I’m with out a car hopefully until some time in September .
