1000-2000 is perfect! I'd suggest around 1500-2000 for a decent line capacity, making a more versatile outfit.Start with 6lb braid, as when you go lighter you will experience issues with wind knots (maybe further down the track you can go down to 3 or 4 lb).Start with 4, 6 and 8lb leader. Tie on 6lb, if the fish are finicky go down to 4lb, if in heavy structure go up to 8lb.You can get any number of decent outfits quite cheap these days. Look for a rod around 7', IM 8 (graphite content) either 1-3 or 2-4kg, which will be a good match for the little reel.Be careful. Although these rods are quite tough, they are also very brittle and easy to bust.

OK I've been having major life changes as of late .wont bore the world with them.Going to change my way of fishing:boot: .Deciding to try lure fishing hardbodies first.I'm looking for a cheapish new reel and rod any clues !!I had a look this afternoon at my local fishing supermarket:P ( a few steps around my corner i will be looking everywhere) .Nice chap suggested 1000 to 2000 weight reel showed me a couple of nice rods .One being a Pflugger just like my fly rod .Of course I'll be chasing Bream in the lake and more likely the Pat .As I now live very close to the Pat and not down the bay:P .Braid what weight do I need and he said to use a Flurocarbon leader again what weight and no way will i buy vanish .Or is fluro like the mono I have been using as in 6lbs.Now I like the 1000 size which is small without using google can we get smaller lighter reels .PSI drive over brown hill creek to go shopping anything live down the western end of this creek?havent been fishing in weeks I'm getting itchy just gotta find some $$$

Personally i wouldn't use anything under a 2000, my flick stick is a multi task rod so i run 10lb braid on one of my spools and 6lb on the other, swap between spools depending what i am fishing for and the same goes for leaders.

Hi Mick good to see you out fishing again. I wish I could get up the lake and have a crack at them. I might stay up that way for a holiday for a weekend and try for them on a warm night. If I fish near the bridges where there's lights I can try some dry flies because that's when the flying ants come out and land on the water. Hopefully I can arrange it in the next few weeks and post a report.PS. I would be happy with any size fish at the moment.Cheers, Dave.

Well it has been a very very long time .So day after xmas winds blowing cooler than Xmas day.But I headed down to the lake anyway.Wind was blowing very strongly headed to the side of the lake with it at my back .Third cast and some tiny bream were jumping at my popper fly.I noticed that my newly tied fly matched the thrown out crayfish shells littering the lakes floor .Anyway that was it for that side of the lake.So I thought the wind would also be at my back on the other side .Well I was wrong .First cast on this side was a shocker .But suddenly I'm on and off of a small Bream.Next cast was a shocker again but I'm on and this small bream landed After that fish I continued on my way but that was it .Two hours in a wind that was getting worse and no more fish. But I'm on the board for this summer yippee

After my Victor trip got cancelled for this weekend. I went for a flick along two of my favorite haunts at the lake yesterday. While me being me I should have used sinking line and varied my flies .Of course I left the floating line on and went with my popper flies. While I got zero fish .I did get a fair few mini Bream to perform aerobatics while trying to eat something they couldn't grab. Jumping bream always gets my heart a ticking.but its better if they take the fly.Tracking along these two beaches .I was trailing a school of something all I can tell u is they were small and thin (pencil garfish not certain or white bait ).And 3 or 4 loved to hit my moving popper but they were very very small.Of course I was trailing this school in the hopes that something bigger was trailing them!!!I had a little chat with Samboman most of the time his sounder was a beeping .And I was scaring the bigger bream as I waded past them!!!So guys it was great to be back and casting a fly .Probably better that I'm doing that after a winter free of fly fishing on a day when the bigger fish weren't quite ready to jump out the water .Big tip for those of us suffering from diabetes take your water bottle or end up dehydrated again like me lolCheersguysPsi did scare the odd larger fish I could see their wake near the fly when I moved it at the wrong time while having a homer simpson moment doh

Hi Micky, you could also take your waders and try the beach for whiting and flathead. There are few man made lakes there to try as well.Cheers, Dave.
