Softy 2,991
Every jetty is different, as sharks/fish follow currents and such.i usually go about 250-300.
BombayDuck 0
I'm usually a "200m man"

BombayDuck 0
are u able to see the balloon proply in the day light ??2 white or yellow balloons stand out pretty well I reckon against a dark blue / green sea
Red1396235487 0
Depends on how much line you have on your reel, in my case i only have 500m of line on my 6/0 so i put it out anywhere from 70m - 250m. As there was lots of big sharks metro here last season i only put my balloon out 100m or so as i came very close to being spooled once from a bronzie. With the visibility factor of the balloons during the day just use dark coloured balloons and you will be able to see them easily (depending on eyesight) and at night you might just be able to see your balloons depending on the jetty and how much light is coming from the land or you could put a small light inside the balloon before you send it out. Barbz 0
tp i do the same thing as you lol.. red ive got a tiagra and a TLD 50 which both have a fair good line capacity Barbz
Red1396235487 0
Awesome! Send it out as far as you want then haha
Barbz 0
... i rekon ill stick 250-200 mark dont wonna c my spool if i get a run
largsbaysquidder 2
I've caught my three sharks on sema4 jetty about 50-75m out I rekon that's all you need as there attracted to the hundreds of crab nets with all yummo fish heads etc... In them.it must be a huge burley stream those nets throw off
Barbz 0
ye ive heard of sharks coming up to the crab nets and taking the baits out of them...

BombayDuck 0
I have my main line ( 50 lb ) tied to a 400lb swivel......from the swivel eye, where my main line is tied,I have about 30cm of 12lb line tied to my balloon(s)......the bottom eye of the swivel,I have 3m of wire trace (usually around 400lb) to 2 x 10/0 hooks.Float out on the wind / tide........see what happens
Guest Daniel
Mate as long as your baits in the water your in with a chance. Don't get obsessed with distance from the jetty or even having to have it off "the end". I've caught ones up to nine foot from balloons placed 30m back towards the shore with balloons sitting 50m out,I normally fish one out 100-200m and one on a slightly smaller bait floated 30-50m out, normally pick out a few smaller(3-5ft) ones on the close baits.Remember guys catch them casting baits from shore, so compare that to the length of a jetty. Wadey 4
so does the balloon bust when the fish strikes and runs ? is there a certain type of knot to be tying the balloon on with ?
Barbz 0
just tie the ballon with a special knot that slides the balloon off the line when u get a decent run im still trying to master that not
BombayDuck 0
I don't use a "special knot".......just use 6lb line, that either breaks easily and the balloon floats off,or if it does drag the balloon under, the water pressure will pop it.
bigtime 1
i also cut the rubber ring of the balloon after tying it up that helps it come away from the trace alot easier. i like the tie it on with light line idea aswell will give that a shot next time
fullysikwog 6
dosent matter how you get the ballon on, as it breaks under the pressure of a nice run
Guest Daniel
I normally tie a small balloon around the size of a tennis ball in amongst my normal size balloons. That way if u miss a good strike and the balloons pop you still have the bait floating out there and the shark might come back for seconds.
Barbz 0
thats a good idea dan
nickmav 0
dont think it matters too much mate. if theres a shark sniffing around your bait it will find it.you just have to be lucky enough that a shark comes across your bait. caught a big bronzie off glenelg afew years ago just flicking a waitless bait over the side.
nickmav 0
have to tie it on with light mono so it breaks off and cut the ring off the balloon
southslide 0
doesnt realy matter how far a balloons out for me, just keep feeding it out til your happy with where its sitting, my mates have had balloons out 200m and mine only 100m and i got the shark of the night, then again iv had a balloon out 400m and only 50m away from shore and got big sharks, as long as you have a bait out you have a chance, have noticed when the small sharks come in early they hang fair close to the jetty chasing bait fish and crab nets etc.
southslide 0
oh and for the balloon coming off, i just pull the ring of the balloon through an eye on my swivel or tie it off with light line, either way though evan if u out it strait to your main line it will pop under the pressure of a good run
voogoofish 1
I think I know what you're asking... blow up balloon, snip off the 'lippy' section and then create a loop (not a knot) at the depth you want your bait to sit below the balloon... then tie another knot in balloon around the loop of your trace... perfect crime as line pulls free as shark (or whatever) hits you and its just you, the fish and a straight tight line!
