Gimbles 0
Hey there all. I'm a long time fisherman but am quite new to boating having bought my first boat a 16ft alloy centre console Savage a month or so ago. I've been seeking squid in the outer harbour, pt adelaide and st kilda area since my first outing, to no avail!! Am I wasting my time or do they frequent these areas?? Someone's old school knowledge will nail this one! Haha. On the upside I'm getting some hours on the boat under my belt and enjoy every second of it. Hopefully I can bring some useful hints and tips to you all soon too. Cheers, stay safe. Gimbles.
Habanero 0
Haven't tried any of those areas for squid myself, but down that way Brighton - Glenelg is killer for squid, the brighton jetty is good but overfished, so if you can get a couple hundred meters out on the boat you will get heaps, possibly even bag limit.I always use tommies on a jag, plastic jigs up that way have been useless for me unless there is a tommie out on a line aswell and use the plastics to tease them into striking it, but usually i will catch 3 on tommies for every one on plastics.Find a nice weedy area with a sandy patch in the middle and cast there, never fails for me.Hope this helps and welcome to the forum. afishyfish and Gimbles
King Ralph 0
Used to get a lot of squid while fishing off the actual breakwater............not in the channel, but the sandy beach side.....normally around the 4th pylon from the shore afishyfish and Gimbles
Savagelip 4
turn right at the north side of outer harbor channel where you see weedy sand patches should be squid, well durring summer anyway afishyfish and Gimbles
talbo 0
Find any area with weed from Largs to Marino. We've consistenly bagged out between Glenelg and Brighton jetties approx 0.5- 1.0Km from beach.Best jigs to use imo are Yo-zuri Orange (YSD), Bright Green and Shimano White ghost in 3.0 or 3.5 size. Gan Craft in Blood Red and Sumizoku in Gold are pretty deadly too! afishyfish and Gimbles
Gimbles 0
Wow. What a quick response!!! Thanks very much for the info, sounds like I'll persist still then. Like I said earlier, I've learnt some new tricks and caught some great fish in the process of squid searching. Thank you all again. Gimbles
assassin 0
Ive not caught any squid around st kilda in many years.... go to goannas on a nice day and should be ok :woohoo: Gimbles
wishing2Bfishing 0
i've had some reasonable catches off of marino in a mates tinnie but there is alot of cuttlefish there as well, i have found that they seem to take the red head/white body yo zuri more than squid in this area tho.not too sure about outer harbour way but i would have thought they would be around anywhere you got broken bottom afishyfish and Gimbles
Dan C 1
Hi Gimbles, we usually do ok by starting around Semmy reef and drifting towards North Haven. Usually in 6-8metres of water. Gimbles and afishyfish
whyallabrad 0
Have caught many boat limits from st kilda and a bit north but best from late april - august. Try the area just north of black pole 3-4kms and drifting when the water is clear in the cooler months, you should do ok. Another tip is size 2.5 - 3.0 jigs and cast them up current and work them back towards the boat. You will get lots of weedy snags but also should get lots of squid!!!!! Normal depth here is 14 - 18 feet. Gimbles, trihull and afishyfish
Gimbles 0
Thanks everyone!! I'm going out tomorrow morning (Easter duties over, Phew). I'll give those northern spots a crack, and will grab a couple of those lures you've recommended also. Thanks again all. If still no luck, off to Fish Factory!! Lol. Gimbles. Moggy23 625
You'll catch squid anywhere along the Adelaide coastline around any broken bottom,I catch my squids anywhere from the Goannas to Semi reef, just drifted for them and you'll find them or they'll find you. Go through the metro posts and you'll see the reports. trihull and Gimbles
