cantieknots 3
Hi, I'm not really looking to start an argument, I just wanted to know what proportion of squid fisherpeople used sqecialist gear. After a recent trip to Yorkes targeting only squid, I really got into it and now look at me, looking up egi rods on Japanese websites. Thanks, David.
bjorn2fish 4,612
Hi David, I haven't voted yet because I don't use a specialist rod/reel but to tell you the truth I could really go a nice squid combo just for ease of use as my current combo has a long butt and it would be easier to flick a squid jag around with a nice rod. keenfisho 1,416
im in the no catergory simply because i have enough light gear already a specialist rod would probably make it easier during long sessions but not convinced i would catch more squid
Fishingmad 306
i use an egi rod (only because i got it for 99c off ebay ) but compared to using my generation black or my other light graphite rods i think it is muuucchh better! Can only imagine how much better a high end egi rod can be!
cantieknots 3
Hmm, I thought there would be at least a couple. Ah well, it hasn't seemed to temper my desire for an egi rod. It's just difficult to know which rods have some genuine R&D put into them and which are just trying to cash in on the fad. Anyone know anything about Major Craft rods? MiSCrEANT 53
Squidding rods definite yes but reels no. All you need is something that is smooth in both retrieve and drag. It will catch as much as the Emeraldas does. Majorcraft rods you say? I own three of them. And definitely more in the future. Best value rod range in the world hands down. MiSCrEANT 53
Cantieknots, A squidding (Egi) rod is different to other rods. No so much R&D, but it does help fight squid and better casting on the jig. Egi rods are parabolic, they bend a lot more than typical rods. To absorb the lunges of squid, so the squid doesn't rip its' tentacles off. This makes the wild darting techniques of the angler easier to perform and maintain as well. Egi rods are long, most rods are around the 8'-9' in Japan. Obviously, covering more ground increases the chances of getting a squid. Egi rods have heavy cast weights, generally 16g and above. Also makes for a nice lure casting surf blank too. So, if I was to target squid, I would invest in an egi rod. bjorn2fish
Scissors 308
Pros use 50c handlines...
Fishingmad 306
Well i guess my egi rod helped yesterday on porties, 7 people on the jetty noboody had caught anything and i ended up with 2 i could whip a jig out a hell of alot further than the other guys though! bjorn2fish
bjorn2fish 4,612
When land based I strongly believe covering more ground is extremely important to find squid. I see more squid landed from people who cast out as far as they can and flick for squid imitating a prawn than those who just drop a jag in the drink and expect a squid to come along and take a liking to a floating jag. So casting distance a big plus! Fishingmad
brenton 637
Shimano Sephia and Caldia 2506.....does it help?,well as has been said it helps to cover more ground and thats a good thing Backchat
Fishingmad 306
I also believe that your egi rods impart a much better action to the jig especially if you are doing a more violent jigging action. As for me? I dont plan on upgrading my 99c egi rod for a high end one anytime soon, it does the job just fine!
cantieknots 3
Thanks all. I decided on a Major Craft Solpara. I'll let you know if I ever catch anything with it. Fishingmad and bjorn2fish
MiSCrEANT 53
How much did pay for it? The Solpara I mean. If you got it locally, I feel sorry for you...
brenton 637
How much did pay for it? The Solpara I mean. If you got it locally, I feel sorry for you... Support your local retailer i say,if everyone goes online then there will be no local guys left. I have found that if you develop loyalty to one shop they will match anything online or close to it,even better in some cases. Some of those guys on the Montabello trip were loyal local customers of the shop. cheers nereus Fishingmad
MiSCrEANT 53
If you could get something for for nearly half of what it is locally, what would you choose? As a student who works part-time, I know what I would choose. A few people would be shocked to see the RRP for Castaway overseas. I find overseas markets are more refined to my fishing style. And no, not everyone will source their gear overseas like I do. I know and understand why the prices are so high though, Australia is not the best market. Apologies to Cantieknots for off-topic discussion.
cantieknots 3
Haven't actually purchased yet. I was thinking of getting it from Ray & Annes's (not sure if I'm allowed to say that here). They have it for $129. Cheapest o/s price I've seen is jpat. Including postage it's about $95 from them. $35 is a reasonable amount of money but I try to purchase locally if possible. Jobs here, money in the community blah blah. It comes with a shirt and cap from Ray and Anne's too. That has to be worth at least $7.50!

If it helps, the Solpara range have similar blanks to the Generation Blacks. As you go up the MC range, they cost alot more here. Volkeys are like $300 here.
