  1. Match the hatch.....

Shrimp patterns, crabs, worm all would work well on YFW...

Here are a few examples to what i mean.....

If they are surface chasing then small fly poppers work well too....

That is the site I get my flies from... I havent caught any on fly yet myself but had a few follows late in the season last year. Will be hitting them hard this summer on fly though.

They look killer for the flats

  2. This is what I have been doing all my life, and my father who was a very skilled Garfisherman before me. If you can understand my explanation it will decrease your tangle problem greatly.

    Basically the pencil float is held onto the mainline above the swivel with two bits of rubber tubing slid over line and float ends...this allows very simple trace adjustment by easily pulling line through the tubing ends. { Also allows for very quick and simple float changes }

IMPORTANT......The tubing needs to be of a size that it slips over the float ends leaving no, or very little float end protruding past the bit of tubing, If there is a bit of float protruding beyond tube it will act as another spot to snag your trace when casting, this will also be the case if you just use the line feed holes on a pencil float, the tubing eliminates the snagging component.

Trace below swivel about 90cm, but infinitely and simply adjustable to any depth the fish may be feeding at by pulling the line through tubing

IMPORTANT.....place a small spit shot about 200mm above bottom hook....this will add a little weight to the rig so when you cast and finger stop the line just as it hits the water surface the extra weight flicks the trace out quickly and in a straight line.

Give it a try, pictures attached may help explain. The tubing system is also 100% effective on all kinds of floats using different sizes of tubing to suit the float style

Cracking idea, would save many tangles, definitely gonna try this out with most floats from now on.

  3.

You can always put the feeder float at the end of the leader.

So you're meaning away from the traditional float setup to float right at the end of leader and hooks between float and main line.    main line > swivel > leader with hook(s) > float

Interesting, and I can see that working to stop tangles.

The only thing I'm thinking, is the main line swivel and hooks would create a bit of curve (sort of like a U shape but not as much) and wondering if that would cause any issues - though possibly not as the main line would be a little taut to the rod.

Probably find the swivel after float is waving off to the side not inline??

  4. just before the float/rig hits the water feather the line  with your index finger as it is coming off the spool.

This is the tried and tested technique for the rig you're using. It will take some time to get use to it and how much tension to feather with. I might suggest get rid of the split shots or reduce the number needed, the bait flowing in the current is the proper presentation. The line Your mono "float side line" is too long or too thick. Maybe even try A shorter length of QUALITY heavier line then swivel. I use a 6lb fluro trace, 12-20!!LB for the float line, tiny clip style swivel( smallest I've got at the time ) . Hope it helps even pop a photo up if ya want.

I've seen a bit of information about pulley rigs for snapper but never used them myself, I did some googling last night but could only find information about using it with an impact shield. My question about the pulley rig is I'd still like to use the breakaway sinker trace, that way I've thought about it was using 40lb line connected to the hook with a bead to stop the sinker from the mainline running up to the hook trace/knot so it doesn't get trapped in there or anything and then using a small sinker with maybe about 2-3cm of 20lb line connected to the sinker, I'm just worried about possible entanglement while casting such as the bait twisting around the hook trace while casting

What you want is a clip down pulley rig with a rotten bottom setup so sinkers can break off without loosing the whole rig. The clip down system makes the sinker and bait one single mass at the end of your line, so no helicoptering baits which means limited entanglements and better casting distance.

For my clip down pulley rigs I stay away from the impact shields as I find them too fiddly. I prefer to use a Breakaway Imp clip or my new favourite the Gemini rig clip.

For the rotten bottom setup you can use special clips designed to fail, but I prefer to use a second Gemini rig clip and a short length of lighter mono. The advantage of this is you can still cast with heaps of power, which the rotten bottom clips can't handle.

You can source all the bits needed for these rigs here in Australia. I have seen the Imp clips in shops but they're kind of dear, not sure if the Geminis are available, but the Fishing Guru sells an identical part that I have tried.

Here's a link to a PDF with all sorts of crazy British rigs, some are quite simple looking and others incredibly intricate. You'll find the pulley rig and rotten bottom rig for a bit of reference.

If you like, later tonight when I get some time, I can take some photos of all this stuff I'm talking about as it's kind of hard to explain in words.

Some cracking rig ideas there....Thanks for the link Plankton. I'll be sure to try some of these.

  6. Thanks.

Sounds a lot like the "creeping death" approach of DEWNR during the MP process.

Closure seems  to be over the top...

Special event aside (regattas) aside, every resident would/should have been aware of the fishing situation before they bought their property.

At the same time, wouldn't it be great if fishos outside of the lakeside properties were all tidy, respectful and quiet.

Perhaps a code of conduct prepared and agreed by fishos, and submitted to the council and residents might be the answer?

    RJ

I might raise the ire of a few people with this, but to be fair there would be nothing unreasonable about something like
"No fishing within 100-200 metres of a residential property 10pm-6am"
    ...from a residential amenity perspective.

I sure as hell wouldn`t be happy with a telescope starwatching club having a midnight picnic on, say, a vacant block across the road from my place on a regular basis...would anyone here?

Are there current restrictions regarding no-go areas or times along the lines of what I mentioned above?
(If that`s already covered off then this new gem certainly needs jumping on, of course!)

The council and residents can take other actions other than the stated. Such as law enforcement like everybody else in the country. Fishos aren't just to blame, but maybe the drunkards from the local waltzing past and other would be no gooders. My spots are within 100-200mtrs of residents and Mulloway fishing is best at the times of 10pm to 6am. Would you ring the local law enforcement on the Star watching club, if they weren't above the dB limits.

  7. Heres the update from SART

    WEST LAKES CLOSURE IMMANENT!

    After more investigation today SART
has discovered that the new lake closures have already been added to by law no. 3 of 2014 DRAFT upon the request of council members.

THESE ARE VERY LIKELY TO GET PASSED BY A MAJORITY VOTE AT THE NEXT COINCIL MEETING UNLESS WE ALL REQUEST AND COMPLETE A FORM AND ARE PREPARED TO TALK INFRONT OF COUNCIL AS TO WHY THESE BY LAWS ARE SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE.

public consultation via a sign was minimal at best and peoples emails and calls are likely to not have much weight when it comes to influencing the final decision. For that reason:

ANSA SA will be requesting this form and as well as speaking at the meeting, we are thinking of holding a rally at this meeting to show that enough is enough in this state! It's time recreational fishing was heard!
