  1. I have a large hoof as well and I'll echo what a few other people have said:I used to use Dunlop Volleys or the mighty KT-26's as a younger bloke. Now it's either steel cap Blundstones, Horne waders, or neoprene wetsuit boots. I own a couple of pairs of crocs but haven't used them for rock hopping, I don't reckon they'd be bad though.Good luck. No skun knees!
  2. A pair of Thinsulate lined jeans (unless it is really cold they sre too warm). Flannelette shirt, jacket or a jumper, then a Columbia/Kathmandu/Mountain Designs type jacket. Beanie for the head covered in very short head. I dont really do gloves, more of a hands-in-pockets type of bloke. And the most crucial ingredient........ Stones Ginger Wine.

  6. I'm not one to form an opinion too quickly about things, ESPECIALLY on an anonymous forum where people have the ability to "shoot their mouths off" without any personal ramifications - not that I am suggesting anyone has done that on this topic at all!I've got a star picket firmly wedged between the cheeks of my backside from being a bit of a fence sitter: there are some great words coming out on both sides of this discussion. If some bloke can take you fishing and get you some good fish and you learn a few things... fan-bloody-tastic. If you don't have $500 or don't want to spend $500 then th

  9. Had a quick look through some stuff and found the following:SHARP OBJECTS OR CUTTING IMPLEMENTSTHE FOLLOWING ITEMS MUST BE PLACED IN YOUR CHECKED BAGGAGE:- ALL KNIVES, SHARP OBJECTS OR CUTTING IMPLEMENTS OF ANY KINDAND ANY LENGTH, WHETHER OF METAL OR OTHER MATERIAL(INCLUDING,BUT NOT LIMITED TO PAPER KNIVES, CARPET KNIVES, BOX CUTTERS,LETTER OPENERS, SCISSORS OF ANY KIND, TRADESMAN'S TOOLS,SCREWDRIVERS, CORKSCREWS AND DARTS),- KNITTING NEEDLES, AND- SPORTING GOODS (INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, SPORTING BATS,BILLIARDS/SNOOKER/POOL CUES, CATAPULTS).IF THESE ITEMS ARE CARRIED IN YOUR CABIN BAGG
  10. Gday.As a few before have said:Don't have any hooks in your carry-on gear. I personally wrap my reels in a pair of explorer socks and put them in my checked-in baggage. If you're hell bent on taking your reels with you in your carry-on baggage then after they go through the x-ray machine the upstanding pillars of aviation security (inbred halfwits) who are manning the checkpoint will probably want to have a look at your reels to make sure there's no hooks attached. As far as travel rods are concerned, I have no prior experience with such items. Knitting needles ARE permitted in carry on baggage
  11. Gday. Here's a link on Strike Hook of my second home built attempt. It's a Samurai S002X built from the associated FUJI kit. I haven't test driven it yet but hopefully will soon - I'll give the epoxy a week to go off completely. The blank has a nice pattern through it, it's as light as anything, and the guides, seat and grips are all good quality - my only complaint is the butt cap is a bit on the ugly side.http://www.strikehook.com/forum/37-the-rod-shop/104046-second-home-build-attemptAs previously mentioned, be warned: IT IS ADDICTIVE. But on the upside you do get many hours of enjoyment and s

  13. 1. Roger on the snapper2. Roger on the flathead3. 60cm whiting or a nice little gummy, can't decide.Well, better get out there. It's a great day and I've had a very slow start.Cheers.
  14. Bimini twist in the braid, then a double uni to my leader.I was a big fan of the Albright but didn't really like the way it ran through my guides during big beach casts.Cheers.
  15. DON'T YOU HATE IT WHEN...You trust that fart that you REALLY shouldn't have.
  16. DON'T YOU HATE IT WHEN...You go blasting past that roadhouse at 110, happy as pig in shit, no bladder or bowel urgencies, then... half an hour later... and it's dark... and just started raining.

  18. After a few coats of colour preserver to the threads, I gave the guide wraps a coat of epoxy...then...my first attempt at marbled epoxy: The hook keeper was wrapped on with a bit of white thread then epoxied over with white, blue and black epoxy, with a bit of pushing and pulling I managed to make it look like a dogs breakfast.I'll let it calm down for a while then give it a clean up and a few coats of epoxy over all the others then it should be tickitty-boo.Cheers.

  20. As previously mentioned, the Saury is a good bait. I was always partial to The Humble Pilchard - or as I prefer to call them The Smelly Muellie - for tailor, mulloway, snapper, kingfish, blue bone over in WA so I kinda continued that over here. Now, I use a smattering of Pilchard or Saury depending on a gut feeling that frequently does not work.Cheers.
  21. Thanks for the replies you blokes.I reckon I might go for a Platypus product whether it be lo-stretch or premium, and I'll weigh up my options between 30lb & 50lb. I may only really need 30lb but 50lb may be useful pulling a good summer mully in over west.Cheers anyway, and thanks for the info.
  22. I'm singing the same song as someone else here:13' Snyder with Alvey 650 on it.My other one is an old 11' Ugly Stik with a Penn 6500SS (which I'm having trouble with).I did have the pleasure of using a couple of my mates rods which were bloody superb:13' Daiwa Sensor Surf with a big Shimano Baitrunner,12' Daiwa Interline Surf, again with a big Shimano Baitrunner.I don't have bottomless pockets, thus both my surf combos are relatively cheap, but if you've got the coin (like my mate) then there's some great gear out there. Cheap stuff still catches fish though! haha.Cheers, good luck with the de
  23. Gday. It's time to re-spool the Alvey as the line has been on there for bloody ages. I'm a big fan of braid on my other reels and as such I haven't bought heavy mono for a looooong time and have no idea where to start.I'm going to need 600m between 30lb and 50lb (15 - 25kg).What are the good brands? Black Magic, Kokoda, Platypus, Maxima, Penn 10X, Tortue, Trilene? What am I going to need to spend? $30? $50?And...... what colour? Nah, just kidding, I've read the previous discussion regarding line colour and have never really been fussed by line colours anyway. Leaders... THAT is a different story
  24. Just like a few others, I go for an Albright on the lighter gear and a Bimini Twist to a double Uni for the heavier stuff.Albright can be a bit fiddly to start off with but the Bimini is one the easiest knots around.Cheers. Tight lines/knots.
  25. Top notch posts there Fishnuts. There's info here for everyone, as you say: the principles involved are basically the same when building a fly rod or a normal rod.Nice, neat threadwork; great photos; concise, simple instructions.... shame I can only hand out a karma point.Cheers.
