  1. Not only Gar but wouldn't that technique also be suitable for filleting whiting
  2. Speaking of which.... and how did Ranger get his tagname ;)It's pretty funny when everyone see's Ranger driving along the Coorong Beach with "Ranger" emblazoned across the top of his 4WD and they all start getting rid of their undersize fish etc :icon_e_surprised:
  3. A bloke at work about 20 years ago used to call me "blubber guts" cos of my small aussie beer belly then it got toned down to "fishguts" and then luckily for me it got shortened to "fishie" not long after and that name has stuck all these years :icon_e_wink:
  4. The easiest way to catch them is to wind up your whiting rig halfway up off the bottom and leave it... you'll soon know when one gets on. I kill them as per sashimi grade standards by spiking the hind brain and then either cutting one gill vein or slit the tail, put them in an ice and saltwater slurry for 10 mins before they go grey and the eyes go cloudy then put them in normal ice. I eat them in sushi and sashimi. They also smoke up really nicely also
  5. That's a nice clean fillet Brenton :)It's a much better way than my old man showed me
  6. Roger, apparently they use some pretty harsh chemicals to flush out the Desal pipes and this also will be flushed into the sea :icon_evil:
  7. Rann wants to spend a million dollars to build a pipeline from a disused quarry in the hills to the Torrens just to refill it up again. What a waste of money when the rains will eventually fill it up over winter :thumb: :icon_evil:
  8. Try smoking snapper wings..... Mmmm! Chicken of the sea
  9. Yep! fishing is a great tool for family bonding.... over the years I've had lot's of comments from different people how well my old man and I get on so well together... and it's all due to fishing. Boating and fishing is all about team work. Even a day out fishing with your mates is a great "bonding" mateship session ...A family that fishes together, stays together :icon_idea:That pic is a great example of what size of fish you'd expect to catch in those days, nower days the average size is a lot smaller at probably about 20lb whereas then it was quite common to get fish up around 30lb on you
  10. Probably a slimey mack :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :laugh:I've been boat fishing since the age of about 4 yrs old but my fondest recollection was catching leatheries and squid off the Screwpile Jetty at Victor when I camped at the Caravan Park there at about age 4 or 5 yrs (late 1960's) with my "non Fisherpeople" GrandparentsCaught my first tuna around the age of 8 yrs oldHere's some snapper I caught 3km off Glenelg in 1972 aged 10 yrs... like Ranger my memory is a bit faded and I think my old man probably only got a couple of bites :icon_lol:
  11. They'll also wash out to sea and bring the snapper in close for a feed
  12. Err! thanks catchnun.. I'm not up on all this centipedes and millipedes stuff..... Mine's 12 inches but I don't normally use it as a rule (old farts joke) :icon_lol:
  13. Nah! ya chuck'em down the toilet and add 2 blind mullet for flavour
  14. I took this on my phone so it's a bit crappy but you should get the gist of thingsChop off the head and gut.. run a sharp knife down oneside of the backbone and then the fish will flatten out and you slide the knife under the backbone thru to the tail.... the whole job takes about 20 to 30 seconds to complete each fish
  15. Geez Tyke, Your catching more snapper than me, I'd better pull me finger out and get cracking! well done, I reckon your smile says it all ;D
  16. Nah! I weigh a bit more than that fellas' :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
  17. Yep! Police officers have the same jurisdiction as a fisheries Compliance Officer
  18. "If I play on the road, should I expect to get run over? And if so, will the government blame it on chickens?"Yes, they will..... we all know why the chicken crossed the road :icon_e_smile: ;DNice bit of prose Tony.. I agree wholeheartedly. It's only in the past couple of years that I heard about people using chicken for crab bait (when I was trying to workout how my boat was getting covered in chicken bones at the marina).... what puzzled me was, why would crabs be attracted to a meat that has no flavour compared to a piece of fish. I've always found the best bait for crabs was a piece of fre
  19. "For your own safety if you want to enter the water, buy a bl**dy swimming pool!"Bad idea Tony... swimming pools require water, which inadvertantly gets sucked from the Murray River..... that's another problem the boffins can't fix either :icon_exclaim: ;D...now I'll have to deduct one of yer karma points... just keep a mental note that you actually have one less :icon_lol:
  20. ..... I reckon Atomic Seagull Carcass would be the go :icon_e_surprised:When I kept my boat in the marina it was always strewn with chicken bones.... the seagulls used to bring the chicken leftovers back to my boat and munch out on them. The bronzies will always move along our metro shoreline following the schools of mullet and yellowfin whiting..... it's a catch 22 situation... less bag quotas for these fish means fish stocks will increase which inturn will mean more bronzies feeding/following the schools of these particular fish (not to mention the sharks probably following the schools of sa
  21. :icon_lol:I took someone snapper fishing over to the shoals the other day and I and the rest of the crew nearly died when one bloke pulled out a banana... we never got any snapper which we were targeting only very big whiting :-\Went locally the other day in someone elses boat(without bananas) and we bagged out on big snapper .fish. .fishswim.
  22. Hmmm! did you ever think that you coulda got 3 times as much if you'd left the bananas at home :icon_e_surprised: ;D
  23. Thanks for the extra advice moose
  24. This idea might catch on http://player.video.news.com.au/adelaidenow/#YsjzEzDQ_iCTiKWXajhRdludkwoPKkkS
  25. Thanks for the help fellas'... Tony I've already got plenty of charts for that area, we fished for a living out of Penneshaw when I was younger and know the Passage fairly well. I've never been to the Pages before. I won't go there unless the water glasses out as it can get quite treacherous down that part of the passage
