  1. Daiwa lead the way with reel technology that can cope with salt water' date=' magseal ensures no salt intrusion into it's main gear and bearings even when submerged, can't say that for shimano .[/quote']Yes Piranha I am a little behind the times! I am referring to a period 5+ yrs ago when they used Magnesium bodies widely and that corroded fast. They have come along in leaps & bounds with their Zaion material & Magseal. These were originally only available in their top end models which you just would not take out wading. It is great to see more recently that all these advances are no
  2. Rarenium CI4 2500 = 200grams V'S Sustain FG 2500 = 260grams. However Sustain FG1000 suggested by Tim, is 200grams. Same as the Rarenium CI4 2500 The 200gram weight balances well on a 7ft soft plastic rod. So with the Rarenium CI4 2500 you can have the balance and the larger spool for longer castsCheers, Des
  3. If you intend fishing the sand flats, then you must be wading.Make sure you buy a reel that is robust in saltwater, because as a wader it will get a lot of exposure to salt water. Do not get a reel that needs pampering and extreme care. You will do your dough fast.I have tried out a few and have found Shimano to be way ahead of the other main brands for salt water toughness. The Shimano Rarenium CI4 2500 is actually very light. The weight will balance well on a 7ft T Curve and it will cast better than a 1000. I have one on a Pflueger Trion 7ft 2-4kg and it works well. The Stradic CI4 2500 which

    FINESSING

"One question,i see you run your sinker all the way down to the hook, how does that compare with keeping it back off the hook for bite / hookup rate? I thought it may put the fish off biting having it so close to the hook but obviously with your results it doesn't ,what are your thoughts either way"Short Answer; It is more successful than my previous rig of a 1 mt trace below a running ball sinker. Although I have to revert to this in windier conditions when a heavier sinker is required. I am using a fairly small (00) sinker which does not put the fish off. The Reasons;Presentation: I think it p
  6. Nice! 40+ cm YFW are nice fish with a good fight KP. The bigger ones are the first to move down to the local beaches. Often they will leap frog the western metro beaches and first appear further south. But I dont think it has been hot enough for that this year.Cheers, Des

    FINESSING

Catching a bag or 2 … or 6! of Yellow Fin Whiting has not been a problem recently. There are always plenty around in the right places. However I have struggled to land many of the better size fish. I have had my share of bites, even plenty hook ups, although I was not happy with the hook up rate. And lastly and most frustratingly staying hooked up. I have had some big blistering runs, from big bruising YFW on light tackle in the shallows. Only to find my hooks pulled. Yes they are definitely YFW and not Flathead. You can tell by the distinct differences in their head shakes. The Flathead thra
  8. I did want to fish on Sunday. I had a plan! But the forecast was for a big blow coming through on Sunday. Forecasted to bring with it some hail & thunder in case just strong winds don't put you off your fishing. Hey and lighting too, which makes me scurry. Me the highest object protruding skywards on the sandflats, complete with a graphite super conductor in my hands and feet immersed in water. And golfers thought it was dangerous! So the obvious change of plan saw me go fishing today (Saturday). My plan was to fish the bottom of the tide. Yes! Chasing goldbars at the bottom of the tide.
  9. Chief, Are You a Dentist?Must you extract teeth?Ok it was late. I had finished a bottle of red and wanted to give a quick opinion before gong to bed. OK! Balance: The balance point should always be at the middle of the reel seat. Although this can be achieved with other methods or materials, rather than a split grip. Ergonomics: It is a lot more effortless to cast with an "extended butt" rod (not necessarily a split grip) than a short butt rod. With the shorter butt you have to use a more forceful action as you would when cracking a stock whip. Sometimes you want that as in fly ro
  10. Split Grip Graphite Rods are the only thing to use wading/land based fishing.Cheers, Des
  11. You can use a shore rod for fishing in a boat. But you will struggle using a boat rod fishing off the shore.Work out your priorities and buy to suit.Cheers, Des
  12. Dublin - Pt. Prime area would be the best bet. However they are on the move. It is just the cold spell that we have just had, has held them back. Sunday or Monday evening tides after a couple of warmer days should bring a few into the Middle Beach - Pt. Gawler area.Cheers, Des
  13. Depends. I do 99% of my fishing wading.Low energy beaches I always have my tub floating along with me! Holds all sorts!Higher energy beaches; Horne fishing bag. It holds Caught fish, Basic tackle in the front pouch. Belt only with Alvey bait box. Small Back pack with more spare tackle, food, drink, Jacket sometimes. Also clip on a landing net.Cheers, Des
  14. Tried Pt Gawler this evening. Not a YFW around for all 3 fishers. Only spotted a couple of feeding marks in the whole area. So nothing came in.However before this cold spell there were a few on the 23/09 So after a couple of days of mid 20s temp they will be back. Try on Sunday - Monday evening tide, at Pt Gawler.Metro proper, it will take a few more weeks of mid to high 20s temp to push them further south.Cheers, DesPS. Still further North
  15. Have a wade down one of the Thompsons Beach channels at the bottom to start of the tide.Bleed a couple of Salmon trout and put them in a keeper net hanging off your tub.You should wind up with this. They are around now.Good fun to land on Yellow Fin Whiting Gear!!!Cheers, Des
  16. Closing this jetty to recreational fishermen, to prevent or reduce the take of illegal size fish is;THE WRONG SOLUTION, TO A DIFFERENT PROBLEM!This is a prime public asset for our sport that must be preserved and made available to all. The bigger and more accessible our sport is to all the more important it will be to governments and the community at large. This probably needs to be started on a separate thread, But the correct solution to problem of indiscriminate fishing is education and proper policing. We need to start with a recreational fishing licence, with a reasonable fee. This will sor
  17. Do other members experience 2 distinct Flathead seasons on the Northern Sandflats?I find they are around when the water temperature is between 13 to 20c.This most commonly occurs during Spring and Autumn. Although if you do get a cold spell of 4 or 5 days in Summer, they will return momentarily while the sea surface temps has dropped. What times of the year do you most often catch them? … IN SHALLOW WADING WATER that is.As I find other times of the year when it is too cold 20, there are more frequent reports of them being caught in deeper water from boats.I finally managed to get out for
  18. But then I wouldn't know!
  19. Yes I have heard that the slime is the remedy . However I have never been unfortunate enough to find out if it works!I regularly wade the Northern Sand flats for flathead and soon found out.Always use a landing net and a pair of lip grippers. If you use your hands, and this was only a 48cm fish that I thought I could easily handle, then this is what happens with their raspy teeth. Cheers, Des
  20. Some you like! Some you don't like!Don't be a sheep and follow someone else's choices!I found this site very helpful;https://www.clueyvoter.comSo put together and prepare your own senate ticket. Print it out before you go and vote.Cheers, Des
  21. What a day of perfect weather Wednesday was. What better to do than spend the day wading on the sandflats in glorious sunshine. You could not get nicer conditions. Crystal clear water, barely a breath of wind, the water like glass and the warm winter sunshine on your back. So nice it would not matter if I did not catch a thing.Just as well! I could not find any Yellow Fin Whiting. I was surprised as I had seen plenty of feeding marks in the shallows near the mangroves where they were feeding at the top of the tide. No fish yet, but I was having a marvellous day in magnificent conditions. I move
