  1. As much as I love squid to eat, my dedicated fortnightly squidding sessions are just as much about bait collection. Heads for snapper and wings sliced up and packed in little glad bags for whiting etc. I am happy to take a few smaller tommies home too as snapper bait. These beat store bought pillies every day of the week. I have a small standing freezer (cost 50 bucks second hand) dedicated to ice, bait and berley. The dedicated freezer is worth every cent, especially compared to the trouble I used to get in when a slow freezing squid head leaked a bit of ink into the wife's pastry... I sh
  2. Hey mate, I always snell the last hook below the sinker on whiting rigs and same for bottom hook on gar rigs - exactly as you said, it sits more naturally and avoids as many tangles. Yes I do sometimes have to cut and retie the bottom hook and yes it does shorten the rig a little. If it happens again I just salvage all terminal gear and retie the whole lot. As for snelling hooks... practice practice practice! Once you get the hang of it it is super easy and somehow cathartic! Practice by snelling s***loads of extra hooks instead of buying the presnelled ones. A thought: when you fish as o
  3. Hey,I change depending on the bait- really soft baits like cockles (when I'm feeling rich) I use a paternoster so that there are 2 baits in case one gets robbed before I get to it. For really calm, shallow water and particularly for nippers, I use the running rig with a light sinker over the swivel. Going to head out this arvo actually. Can't wait.
  4. I went for my first trip to KI about this time last year and had a great time. We stayed in a cabin on the north coast (definitely not pet friendly- or car friendly for that matter). The north coast seems to be a bit more rugged and more rocky. Though really rough weather hampered the whole trip I still managed snook off the rocks as well as tommies, whilst the beach had good numbers of mullet and a few other things over a couple of days. On the last day the weather cleared up enough for me to pull the rod out and kill some time in Nepean Bay before heading to the ferry. Fishing 4lb line with

    End of ban

Definitely keen to back into them. Have fished Wallaroo (not jetty) area this year land based and done well. The tides for that first few weeks are no good though and I've learnt that if the tides aren't moving there, don't bother. We'll head to the Coorong beach midweek (not a people person when it comes to 4x4 and fishing)- snapper and mullys sound good to me.
  6. Hey, I've pumped them at Pt Hughes way if that helps- it's not exactly close but if you're going for YFW then that area is great anyway. From Paralowie it's really only 2 hours- really nice flats and the YFW love the nippers. Makes me want to go right now.
  7. This is a really fascinating topic. It amazes me how some of those sharing their opinions switch between the legal and moral arguments. It also amazes me how the laws seem to have countered some parts of the moral question and not others. I don't fish for rays- I have caught them as a by-catch and have always released them. I didn't even know that people 'de-barb' them as trophies, though it doesn't surprise me. I release them unharmed because I know other people value them. I don't release puffa fish and shitties and I have often released Port Jackson sharks after 'spiking' (not trying to sof
  8. I've always known them as strongfish. Never eaten them as they seem to smell pretty bad and I can't imagine they'd taste a whole lot better! I've caught a few fishing the bottom of Yorkes- on 6 pound whiting gear they were a lot of fun.
  9. Hey Solid317,I usually fish Tiddy Widdy and some other beaches- depends on wind/tide. Tiddy Widdy for Sand Whiting is good- usually catch plenty on bait and have caught a few recently on hard body lures- on 4lb tackle it's a lot of fun- especially fish over the 40cm mark. I've spooked some big flathead up around 75cm + but never managed to catch one there on lures. I also fish The Gap on the other side of the YP. I think I'll try some of the beaches/rocks on the other side as soon as the wind dies down a bit. Maybe camp The Gap or Pt Riley rocks.I just bought my first boat too (15ft half cab f
  10. Thanks All,I'll try Moonta Cal- not fished the beaches there much but it'd be worth the look.
  11. Thanks RangerI'm trying to avoid buying anymore plastics!!!I've used the plastics worms with a little success but I have to admitt to enjoying HB if I'm going to cast arteficials.I'll keep looking!
  12. Hey all,I do most of my fishing on the Yorke Peninsula and was wondering if anyone knows were I can start pumping/digging worms/nippers etc. I fish a lot for sand whiting (off the beach) and keep getting this pain down the left side of my body when I buy cockles!I have recently had a bit of success with hard body lures by the way (46cm sand whiting- pb) but I like to have bait for when they are less aggressive. The beaches I regularly fish don't seem to have worm/nipper holes or anything obvious...
