  1. So? Have you lost interes already? The termites will swarm again as soon as it rains.
  2. Mickyj,You are talking about some finesse here. Scottish style, parachute fly, they have large, lightweight hackles so that they land softly and float, as used on North Atlantic Salmon, and extra light tippets so that the fly floats down gently. Would probably only work when termites or some other bugs are swarming. I will see if I can dig up some pics. RogerG
  3. Hi! 1Fish,Anything that you have found successful on Barra or Jacks would be suitable for mullies, flathead, salmon and even bream. If you have any variations on The Deceiverthey are especially good for bream in Chatraux/White. Pink Things will nail Redfin and large Snook. As for you gear, it sounds similar to what a lot of us use, surfside. Your shrimps sound interesting, especially for lizards.CheersRogerG
  4. I cobble up my own using commercially made spinner bases and dressing them up with feathers or chenille etc plus paint and double or treble hooks. They work fairly well on Salmon and have even caught the odd Kingie. Check your email!CheersRogerG
  5. I ticked bait then SPs but I also use HB and spinners also flyfish both fresh and salt.I mostly fish from the boat so it is bait on one rod, out sternwards, while I jig an SP over the side or sometimes a stickbait. I sometimes spin in the shallows for flatties while the bait rod is set in a channel for schoolies.I like to flyfish for trout and SP or spin/hb for redfin, sometimes spin for trout.depends on the day, but bait = Maggots, worms, grubs, yabbies, cockles etcwhich I prefer to catch mayself. Then little fish for bigger fish. SPs, spinners, hard bodies, stick/jig baits, jigtails and vari
  6. I have always, where possible, used feral pigeons for crab bait. One bird is good for at least twenty crabs, sometimes as many as fifty. My actions help to rid us of the filthy "flying rats" that compete with our native birds for food, water and nesting space. When I can't get feral pigeons then I use chicken necks threaded on to the clip like beads on a necklace. The crabs have fun trying to get these off and thus hang on so that I can haul them in. In my fifty five years of crabbing I have never witnessed a shark come anywhere near my crab nets. I have tried chook for fishing bait on various
  7. To add more Spencer Gulf mullies to these over the next few yearsRogerG
  8. T BoneHave a look at Shimano Catana range, I use a 5'6" 3.5-9kg one from my surf yak but have seen shorter versions.RogerG
  9. Thats the go MarsOne. Once you have been bitten by the fly "Bug" it never leaves you. You can probably pick up some good gear in U.K. and Europe. Check out the S/H shops and markets. Some pretty good stuff comes out of France and Germany as well as U.K.Happy New Year everybody!RogerG
  10. In an earlier thread I described smoking salmon trout using a red wine/herb marinade and red gum sawdust. Dry the fillets out, after marinading for three hours, so that the surface is just dry to the touch. Then smear lightly with olive oil. I use a large box smoker but place a portable gas ring under it instead of the metho burner. (The same gas ring as I use for my crab cooker) I only turn on the outer gas ring and as low as I can get it. I reckon that a gas webber will work really well as long as the sawdust tray is wide and long enough to cover most of the lower tray. One of the old steel,
  11. Most fly lines tend to be very soft and heavy they are also bloody expensive hence the reels have to be made of highly polished materials so as not to abrade or nick the soft line material. The reels also have to have a very hard surface so as not to scratch or abrade easily, also they have to be light weight because the thickness of the line means bigger, wider spools than those used for mono. Suitable alloys such as Duralumin are expensive and difficult to work. So an old Alvey or Steelite Blackfish reel just won't do! There is also the snob (W***er) attitude that some people have. I have ar
  12. MarsOneYou can get a decent trout set up, good enough to start you off, for around $100.Look at some of the Shakespear stuff (Made in China)They put out an outfit consisting of a Pflueger PSFY 8056 rod and Shakespear 1094 reel plus line and backing etc. Even a couple of flys. The rod is a three piece 8ft(2.44m)#5/6 with reasonably good cork grips. This outfit is good enough to do some serious Trout fishing and give you the feel of things.I started of with a very old and well used "Young's of Redditch" split cane rod with an "Avon" reel which used to belong to an uncle. There were not many glas
  13. RocknevHave you ever tried eating a Trumpeter (Shittie)? You sound like one of my nieghbourswho reckons that MY homebrew tastes like shit! He has NEVER tried my homebrew!!! but he tried another blokes homebrew about thirty years ago and it tasted like shit so, he thinks, mine must taste the same. Every body who has tasted my homebrew has come back for more. Perhaps, like me, the Asians that you mention can cook!!!! Like the dozens of Europians that came to my property every Christmas to catch carp for their christmas dinner! I have tried cooking carp every which way but, to me, it tasted awful
  14. Great account Mickyj, it brings back some good old memories. I don,t get to flyfish,in that style, very often these days because both my legs and feet are past their use by date. I wore em out with 30 years of landscaping! However, I still have the memories and the mind is willing even if the body is not. These days I stick to the bank or the boat.CheersRogerG
  15. There are many boaters who stand and rely on their steering wheel for support. If a boat is accelerating up to planing speed and a 90-110 kg bloke is hanging off the wheel it is going to put an awful strain on the steering gear. It is better to have a small grab rail on the dash to hang on to or sit.RogerG
  16. An old friend, Mo Mills, was fishing from her friends boat, South of Ardrossan, and had just baited up and cast with her best rod, she leant the rod against the side of the boat while baiting up her second rod, a heavy bite and first rod goes straight over the side. They fished that drop for a while only to catch one small snapper and so they pulled the pick and headed out to the next drop and so on. After about four hours fishing they decided to call it a day and headed for home. On approaching the first drop on the way back, they decided to have a couple more tries, within seconds of making
  17. When ever I am in diving mode, in the Spencer Gulf, I wear an electronic shark repeller, one of the original South African type. ANY fish, not just sharks, do not come within 6-8 metres of me with the device switched on. I have had large sharks do an abrupt about turn when 6-8 metres away and it was not because they were scared of me. Yet almost as soon as I switch it off I have fish swimming within arms length. Obviously their "polymodal nociceptors" are working overtime when the device is switched on. Define "Pain"!!!!I would say that they would be getting something like the jolt that most o
  18. On the plane I always sit, I need a backrest with 225hp behind me. In approach channels and off the plane I usually stand to get best visabilty, you never know when some idiot will decide to swim in the channel! When using the outboard, (8hp Mariner) for trolling, 4-6 knots I usually stand up or sit on the transome so that I can reach the outboard more easily.RogerG
  19. I wish the fish were always biting as good.CheersRogerG
  20. Why go to all the trouble to make an excellent table fish taste like a cray? Crays are grossly over rated. Yabbies is yabbies and there aint nothin that compares with a nice feed of yabbies. Dory is an excellent grilling fish, on a par with flounder so why stuff around with it? Or perhaps you can't really cook!RogerG
  21. Well, I checked out Lake Inchequin and there is very little water in there. It looks as though the council has done a major clean up tp the banks and lake sides .I am hoping that there is still some breeding stock left.RogerG
  22. Try 20% Eucalyptus oil in 80% Morningfresh or other good quality washing up detergent. The Eucie is an excellent penetrator and dissolves oil and grease and the combination will leave the cork clean, soft and pliable. A thorough rinse will get rid of the smells.Eukie is also good for freeing rusty threads, cleaning and flushing car radiators, and a few drops in the laundry softens wool jumpers.CheersRogerG
  23. Nice fish Tony! I have to go to Clare tomorrow so I might have a flick around Lake Inchequin while I am there. CheersRogerG

  25. I have several marks in an old note book which refer to Wigglies Trees and Wigglies Scrub between fourth creek and Jarrods Point, Nth of Pt Broughton I would be greatful for any information on this area. Information was "promised" on another site but was not supplied. One mark has the information "16th Jan 92, 1060kg Snapper" plus name of drop and line of site co-ordinates.Any clues anybody?RogerG
