  1. Thanks, guys - appreciate your feedback. Also, found this site last night:http://www.wildwestfishingcharters.com/index.phpAnybody know anything about this operation, one way or the other?SF, I might get back to you closer to departure time and take up your offer - I've been over that way before, but not fished it.Cheersarcherfish
  2. G'day AllThinking of going over to Venus Bay on the West Coast in late October.Any suggestions as to what species I could target? (I will be land-based - unless somebody can recommend a local charter operation.)Cheersarcherfish
  3. Hi jaggerDid you check out the "Where to Buy" link on the Spotters site?http://www.spotters.com.au/view/438CheersarcherfishBTW - if you work out what you've spent on tackle over the years, $200+ for sunnies is relatively small change!
  4. Spog777 - it's the old mantra, mate - "You get what you pay for".I'm currently using Spotters "Coyote", which I have been more than happy with (even as all-round general use glasses). I previously had Mako's (until an unfortunate accident!), which were fine, but not as robust as the Spotters. I have also heard that "Fuglies" are supposed to be good performers and good value (and they float!).Cheersarcherfish http://www.spotters.com.au/http://www.makoeyewear.com.au/http://www.fuglies.com.au/
  5. Would have been a more interesting story if the headline had read:"Eel almost dies when a man swims up his bum!"
  6. SnappaHuntaI think you will find that FRDC have done a fair bit of work regarding barotrauma, but so far the only conclusion seems to be that different species of fish respond differently to different release depths and methods. This obviously doesn't help to answer your question - merely to highlight that a bit more work needs to be done in this area. You may also wish to check out this from the Recfishing Research site: http://publisher.onepixel.com.au/document_download.asp?service=4&set=3&document=47Cheersarcherfish
  7. My best line for snapper is:"What's a nice fish like you doing in a place like this? Would you like to come back to my place and check out my collection of squid?"Cheersarcherfish
  8. Anyone know why Tackleworld at O'Halloran Hill is closing down?
  9. CarpsI got mine from Snowy's Outdoors, but here's a link to Columbia's Australian website: http://www.columbia.com.au/?language=defaultClick on the "Store Locator" for your nearest outlet.Cheersarcherfish(and no, I don't work for them!)
  10. Agree with you disturbed - my Columbia jacket has served me well.Cheersarcherfish
  11. Hi mpeteThere has been a previous thread on this topic. My contribution, if you're interested:www.arounddarwin.com.au/darwin_fishing_charters.htmlCan recommend Mark West's Hooked on Fishing Safaris - not cheap, but if this guy can't get you onto fish, you may as well give up. Can't vouch for what he's currently doing, but previously he used to be able to do the usual barra stuff, but also can put you on to a lot of reef species, local pelagics and black mulloway, etc...Need to book early though, as he has a lot of repeat business from Oz and International clients.Cheersarcherfish
  12. There's an article on fish smoking in the June/July edition of "South Australian Angler". I've had good results with a Togar Oven which I ordered many years ago and had delivered by post from Queensland (see website below): http://www.togarovens.com/index.phpThey're simple, robust, compact & easy to use for smaller quantities of fish (as opposed to the "Hark" smoker featured in the above article). Most of the larger tackle stores stock various types of sawdusts for smoking fish - just experiment until you find one you like (redgum is a good all-rounder).Cheersarcherfish
  13. Try some surf poppers as well ...
  14. Australian Fisheries Academy at Port Adelaide do a course in filleting - I found it to be reasonable value for money (although to clarify, I did do it a few years ago).http://www.afa.edu.au/courses_filleting.htmlCheersarcherfish
  15. Probably a bit Off Topic, but has a link to previous posts...Good old toothbrushes!Hubby: "Whenever I get mad with you, you never seem to get upset. How do you manage to control your temper?"Wife: "I just go and clean the toilet."Hubby: "How does that help?"Wife: "I use your toothbrush."
  16. ReelinYou sound like someone with an appreciation of good knives...I suggest F. Dick, Zwilling Henckel and Shun could also be added to your list - along with a newcomer, Solicut.Cheersarcherfish
  17. I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever with Dexter Russell filleting knives (in particular, their "Sani-Safe" range) - they're a joy to use and keep an excellent edge. They also do a good oyster-opening knife (also in "Sani-Safe") - once you get used to using it!See attached link:http://www.kitchenwaredirect.com.au/Brands/Dexter-Russell;jsessionid=0a010b421f4331ac424ef4a64bce80a7b9e1c4fe8cac.e3eSc38TaNqNe34Pa38Ta3aOb390Cheersarcherfish

  22. G'day pescadosSee:http://fishing.about.com/od/basicfishinginstruction/a/red_fishingline.htmHave found red or (hi-vis)fluoro pink work well as "all rounders".Cheersarcherfish
  23. Have found that a very coarse kangaroo mince seems to work better than beef mince, and you can thread your hook through some of the larger bits of meat...Cheersarcherfish
