  1. From the news article;"This prosecutor analysed the law and said as anglers fishing with heavy equipment in an area known for white sharks, they would have a reasonable expectation of catching great white sharks, and so just by fishing with that equipment in that area they are in effect breaking the law."A very slippery slope - one wonders what the dividing line between "reasonable expectation" and "possibility" might be...Is there merely just a possibility of a GW being hooked at [insert pretty well any South Oz location here] or is it reasonably likely? Is not EP (particularly) "known" for GW
  2. Interesting comments there Ale.Spent two weeks north coast KI in Dec, some people were catching them but very sporadic apparently. We had very little action at our "reliable" marks, unusually slim pickings I must say!And I estimate three quarters of those actually hooked were undersize, other folks made the same comment too.I swear most of the time it was almost as if either the fish finder was lying or they just did not want to play...
  3. I don`t bother, and by the sound of many posts on this forum there is little point - I still have the FishWatch number programmed into my mobile but really starting to wonder if I should free up some space on my next stored numbers cleanout. And lately I suspect they would be prioritising their resources towards responding to reports of people using large reels on the beach during the day...closely followed by maybe checking catches of pink fish at metro ramps.Maybe.A few kids at the lakes? Meh...
  4. "Cameras running......quiet.......begin!"Spoken in Russian.Supposedly video of a fatal accident during the filming of Expendables 2 in Bulgaria last year.
  5. Nanman Unfortunately it is about "seen to be doing" politics - BTW recs do have an impact by definition, but as you say not to anywhere as significant an extent as the level of commercial extraction over recent years.I actually think that what has been implemented for this year is worthy of consideration as a permanent fix, ie a ban on commercial extraction until 15 Dec and reduced bags for recs for the first two weeks of Dec. People can still fish, regional communities not adversely affected economically, conservation imperatives are addressed, a win-win compromise...too bad it doesn`t look
  6. Location/size/quantity, all irrelevant...they`ll just keep doing it until they`re busted, when and if.Whereupon plead ignorance (whether genuine or not), possibly let off with a caution, have a few recfishing guides handed out to them - which even odds will get piffed out the car window on the way home.Without a Singapore-style law enforcement approach (or at the very least a five/ten-fold increase in fisheries officer numbers) this sort of stuff will just keep on happening unfortunately. But there is every likelyhood that the big fisheries boat with attendant rubber ducky will be prowling the

    shark gear

paulyPossibly a bit of bias at this end, but I reckon my Tyrnos 30 would catch most things...Mono? Used to like Platypus Platinum until I discovered the Kokoda GTR Ultra - greater rated dia for a given poundage I think, but just seems to be better with both knot tying and memory considerations, once again I could be subjective there.I like your mention of the poundage. FWIW I am primarily a boat fisher, both the Tyrnos and the Penn 330 wear 50lb GTR - my simplistic theory is if that line fails I probably wouldn`t have wanted to bring that particular beastie in anyway!
  9. Savage480, you nailed it at the top of this page- RecFishing Guide, p20Fishers are reminded that where fish are taken for use as bait, they must also conform to size limits specified for the species.and, additionallyIt is an offence to cut up, fillet or otherwise mutilate fish or crabs on a boat (except for scaling and gutting) unless the fish or crabs are to be eaten on board. This only applies to fish (other than shark) and crabs subject to legal minimum lengths. Please note that legal minimum lengths still apply to such fish.BTW deliberate C&R of snapper during the closure will get you
  10. People...with respect, I fail to pick up on the semantics which have generated this rather esoteric discussion!"The man was interviewed and admitted taking 20 abalone – he also did not hold a valid recreational fishing licence."Shows a complete disregard of the law by the individual and restates to everyone that a recfishing licence is required. Thus it made the offences even worse for that reason alone. Don`t see a problem there.Mr Millar said as well as the jail sentence the man was fined $1000 for not having his recreational fishing licence and taking invertebrates from the inter-tidal zo
  11. A spokeswoman for Fisheries Minister Gail Gago the second man was "believed to have been illegally fishing for sharks at the same time and location and associated with the offender".http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/man-cautioned-for-illegal-shark-fishing-at-somerton-park/story-e6frea83-1226520316642So, both "illegally fishing" but one gets fined, the other cautioned?More information required there...
  12. GrazzAbsolutely no dig intended - I can see how someone could have misinterpreted "this website", and assure you that I have no conceptual issues with your posts on the matter. All good, mein herr!
  13. Grazz! The sentence with "this website" then segued to NewMatilda and Greenpeace... I will try to include semicolons next time to make things perhaps a little less ambiguous.
  14. Whilst taking this website with a pinch of salt (and possibly some of the details being over-emphasised for effect), a little googled backgroundhttp://newmatilda.com/media/Seafish_Tasmania_Ownership_briefing.pdfThe ASIC basicshttp://www.abc.net.au/radionational/linkableblob/4198198/data/seafish-tasmania-pelagic-asic-report-data.pdf
  15. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/opinion/facts-about-trawler/story-fn558imw-1226476027673"Planning for the venture was under way not for seven years but closer to seven months. The Dutch operating company, Seafish Tasmania Pelagics, was registered on April 21, about a month after AFMA (wrongly) doubled the jack mackerel quota to economically justify the venture."
  16. The Federal Government has announced a two-year ban on super trawlers in Australia. Hey, what about this though - would it still be okay if we use a slightly smaller ship???http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-20/super-trawler-company-seeking-smaller-boat/4381204Mr Geen says he has been unable to find out if his company can fish its quota using a smaller factory freezer trawler of at least 90 metres. "We need to fish our quota, we are a fishing company but we are not going to bring a vessel halfway around the world again without some concrete guidance."Would that be the Seafish Tasmani

  18. If, repeat if, this from page 5 of the thread is correct then assuming it was mono trace and the hooks were no longer than 50mm or had a gape no greater than 18mm, etc etc I hope he takes it to court because there was no offence committed.Otherwise - rules is rules, if you want to pull that sort of stunt just to make a point then 110% squeaky-clean is the way to go. I would urge all to bear in mind though, that there is a review of the rules imminent.Just sayin`... The others potentially being charged - probably a technicality matter of "assisting in the taking" or something along those lin
  19. Groan... :whistle:Transport Minister Pat Conlon blamed the rise in unspent levy on a fall in applications for funding by local councils, which under a protocol are asked to meet 50 per cent of funding for a project. How very convenient to have such a protocol with councils being short of money and all.
  20. negruky This is a grey area at the moment and, by inference, subject to enforcement discretion depending on whether they think you are full of BS or not.And it is exactly why Item #2 of Restriction Hours is in the MFA draft paper that RJ posted tonight on the Metro Sharking Restrictions thread; It is strongly advised that a definitive statement is included in any review of the current restrictions to the effect that fishers who are still in the process of angling a hooked shark at the 5:00am deadline will not be liable for an offence under the Fisheries Act if all other aspects of the capture a
  21. This is where the politically driven decisions of PIRSA`s masters will come back to haunt them.A brilliant manifestation of political knee-jerk stupid rule outcomes generating, ahem, unintended consequences...I`m standing by for a finessing of the rules down to prohibition during daylight hours of "wire trace or non-homogeneous monofilament line" etc.Followed by another workaround...followed by another loophole found... Gail et al - this is what happens when you bow to special-interest yuppie latte-set group-lobbying by people whose sensibilities are offended by someone daring to have a line i
  22. Yeah, I am seeing a lot of clothing, rod, lighting and beach surface similarities between the two photos. If the beastie was captured metro on naughty gear, I find it hard to believe that all of those present were unaware of the tackle restrictions. After 7.30 as I post, the photos could certainly have been taken around this time a couple of days ago.
  23. Not the best evening for a beach fish, but if anyone is out and about 8pm-ish tonight - a shot of the beach waterline facing west could be an interesting exercise?
  24. Like...not using the actual photo taken, but a file shot, and mis-attributing the latter?Naah, never happened before...

Hey, Cleaver! The Source Attribution directly under the photo has been amended on the site - it now just says "Source: adelaidenow", the "Colm Mooney via" I saw this morning has been removed...The HeraldSun version still had the attribution though, well, until just before 3pm...double checked their site just before posting this, and guess whathttp://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/catch-of-day-could-land-anglers-in-hot-water/story-fndo471r-1226507857924they have also just a little while ago removed any mention of NewsForce and Colm Mooney from immediately below the photo! What is going on her
