  1. Would have been an almost lightning strike. Before lightning actually strikes you get 2 things, one is channels of negative charges coming down from the sky and then you get multiple points of positive charges trying to go up to meet it. When they manage to meet halfway to bridge the gap then the lightning happens. But you can have failed ones, if your looking in just the right place you can sometimes see a faint red glow going up. There have been photo's of people standing around and when the photo develops they see a weird finger of light coming out of the ground heading toward the sky.
  2. Thanks. There is lots of information and gear out there overseas for drop-shotting. In order to stand the hook out more for better action they have these other types of hooks: Not seen any of them or similar in Australian retailers yet, probably a bit too exotic for our market :-)
  3. Watching some video's of asian jig fishers and noticed that one of them had a very interesting deep water squid rig setup. Rig at about the 3 minute mark. Instead of using extra chin weights, head-cap weights or a paternoster setup for a deeper drop they have attached a small metal jig without any hooks up the line at the swivel. Would double as both an assist weight to get the jig to the bottom and a flasher to send out extra flash to attract squid. There are plenty of times I've been alerted to squid in the vicinity by plugs on my metal lure like a halco twisty so the metallic fl
  4. Those stinger links are also used for something they called the 'fireball rig' used for presenting dead baits in a similar manner to lures:
  5. Its very simple ScaledUp. The treble is attached to a short wire link with a tiny crimped loop on the end. That is just slid over the hook and a rubber disk pushed over to hold it in place. It was a pre-build bit of the dropshotting kit I bought in Finland and is used for the larger plastics targeting pike and zander, hence the wire to deal with sharp teeth. So long as pressure is kept on the line when fighting the fish the gape of the hook and the rubber disk prevents it sliding off. For gulp sandworms you could do similar but with fluoro or mono and a very small tied loop instead of
  6. There are a few soft plastic techniques that I've read a bit about and had a go with in Europe but don't seem to have taken off here at all. From all the guides, tutorials, fishing shows and in-store tackles for Australia the sole plastics techniques I can see are free-lining and jig-head. So I thought I would write up a piece for this new section and see what people think, have you heard of these techniques and rigs, have you tried them and what sort of success have you had. Apologies for the quality of my phone pictures, it doesn't do well in indoor lighting. Plenty of high quality pictures
  7. Apparently a lot of species on the list were duplicates. No surprise the keep finding more in the ocean, it's the last 'undiscovered country'. Stocks might have gotten a little better in South Australia with improved environmental standards and restrictions on commercial fishing methods and wastage but fish stocks are still managed on the basis of maximum sustainable commercial yield which is a sustaining population of roughly 30% of 'virgin' pre-fishery levels.
  8. Because it could: Spangled Perch taking advantage of flooding to migrate between waterholes. http://www.themorayslair.org/category/magicmoments/
  9. There are legends of even bigger ones in some remote Russian lakes, and containing human remains they had eaten although with their nature they likely just ate a person who drowned. But most of the big ones are in warm Mediterranean climate rivers where they have been released and can grow big all year round. One of the reasons they are on a banned fish register for here since the Murray would suit them just fine :-)
  10. Yeah, I've been watching some of them. And YFTV. There is a lot of what normally would be DVD and televised content coming online now-days where they are presenting it in less the technical/instructional style and more as artistic cinematic style that I have been really enjoying. A lot of it is coming from Europe/Scandinavia on both Youtube and Vimeo. Things like: Cold Reeds A 20 minute video about the cold autumn/spring pike fishing in Finland, put together in part by the fly outfit I was fishing with when I was in Helsinki. Norrlands Guld (2&3 have English Subtitles an
  11. I've been watching a lot of fishing video's on youtube, and not just the homemade trip footage. Some really good shows and footage showing up so I thought I would list off some of my favourites to share and see if anyone has come across any good channels of their own. First up is KanalGratis.se https://www.youtube.com/user/kanalgratisdotse As you might guess from the name its Swedish but a lot of their videos are either in English or with subtitles. Top playlists I enjoyed watching are Fly vs Jerk, Perch Pro and the Florida Chronicles which has some really great footage and cinematogr
  12. I don't bother with a swivel as I run braid-leader-lure a lot. At the end of my line I use either a size 0 egi-snap or a size 0 mustard fast-attach that I can just clip my terminal tackle onto. That passes through my smallest guide and means I can rig up and ready and swap between different lures and rigs very quickly. One major thing to watch out for is that if you are too rough getting it through your guide, such as retrieving too far by accident you could chip your guide and it will start slicing your line off, which will put the rod out out action till you can replace it.
  13. Need to go out and get myself some drinking straws. These look very realistic:
  14. Been watching a lot of YouTube fishing video's lately. Came across this one: Check out the rod work starting at 2:30 when they have a triple hookup of big Snapper, both guys and.. the camera man. Surprised they didn't lose any rods overboard! And 14.5kg snapper on whiting gear with a 1000 sized reel looks fun :-)
  15. Following up on this and doing some more research and some crude self testing it looks like the single strand FG knot actually has a pretty major flaw regardless of how you tie it. It only retains about 70-80% or so of the main braided line strength failing at the point where the line starts the wraps under the cinches. Beside my own anecdotal experience with testing my knots to destruction read quite a few reports and discussions around it. Of course it is only a major 'academic' flaw because braided lines usually have an actual break strength higher then their listed strength so even w
  16. Yeah, I've been watching those videos before and been trying it both ways with the "fast" way that can be a bit painful on the hand with low-diameter braid such as the 8lb I've got running on my light rod and the longer more methodical way of working the wraps down like in my video but finishing with half-hitches like the others do. But I have had a couple of issues with it. The knot was holding up fine for tension and fighting fish but after many hours casting with the shock and tension going on and off some of the half hitches were getting tiny amounts of slack developing in them and wit
  17. While practicing my knots for the new year I was making some Australian Braid doubles which got me thinking of the similarities to the FG knot with the braiding distributing the tension across the whole knot. So I decided to test out a variation on finishing the FG knot in the same style the Australian Braid is locked off. It seems to be a bit simpler, neater and hold up better than the usual method of multiple half hitches I've seen on all the instructions and demo videos I've watched. Video showing my technique here:
  18. Nice fish! Now all you need to do is catch one on a dry fly during a mayfly hatch on a chalk stream while wearing tweed, as the purists would say What type of fly did you use for that one?
  19. Here's a quick photo from my mobile of the Grub fly I was talking about. Looks pretty simple to tie and the latex gloves are cheap and easy to get. From Flyfishing for Coarse Fish By Dominic Garnett, an English fishing writer who has an interesting blog about all sorts of UK fishing, http://dgfishing.co.uk/
  20. Some people would burn you at the stake for that kind of heresy :-) Personally I don't think it really counts as fly fishing since the point is not just the method of casting but also being able to trick the fish with the artificial offering by matching the hatch. But fly fishing it being moved in all sorts of different directions these days with people pushing the boundaries. Have you got any pictures of your gent flies and method used to tie them? I haven't tied any myself but I saw a really realistic imitation pattern by using the round rolled edge of those disposable latex gloves t
  21. My best spot has been Marino rocks turning right from the old boat ramp and more towards the beach side where it is loose rocks instead of large outcrops. Wading out at falling tide near low and chucking lures or flies. Metal slices were easiest for rapid cast and retrieve.
  22. Doesn't help when you have things like the 'This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.' for the 17th October reporting 'Bream continue to be caught in the upper reaches of the Onkaparinga River along with small to legal size school Mulloway' How far exactly are the 'upper reaches of the Onkaparinga River'? You think a local tackle store would include something about the closed season wouldn't you?
  23. Considering the cost (Kayak+Freight+Currency Conversion) and the risk since I haven't heard really good things about the cheap Chinese knockoff inflatables you might be better saving a little more and getting something better designed from the start. That sunshade might look nice but in our gulf I think it would be like a sail and pose a real risk of capsizing unless there is almost no wind. You can get a StraitEdge angler from an Australian dealer for about $1200. Aluminium accessory rail and keel like support struts at the front and back for better tracking. http://www.ozinflatablek
  24. @rotare - Most tinny's if you buy them basic with no accessories have crappy aluminum seating, no rod holders and everything on the floor slides about until it sticks in the channel in the middle and gets soaked by the bilge water that gets there. You can add after market modifications to an inflatable just as you can with a tinny. Seen some good video's with really well set out inflatables with railing added around holding rod-holders, bait boards, fish finders and everything else you might want with decent seats added in and all the other unnecessary but enjoyable modifications. Plus the
  25. And in their advertisement of it they show an image of 3 fishermen showing of their catch of nice sized striped bass in the US. Which if you google search the image shows that it looks like it has been illegally lifted from a catch report for Lake Lanier apparently. All caught on conventional tackle on down-riggers. http://www.theoutdoorstrader.com/threads/217198-Lanier-Stripers-Sept-7-amp-8 Better off getting one of those pen rods and a better quality ultra-light reel to stick on it.
