  1. that was cool, i particularly liked the first video, amazing amount of fish at all depths
  2. Bump, I'm still keen to hear from those on the site i know have done a fair bit of fishing for sharks from boats, iI'm not after GPS marks or anything, just a general run down of what they have found has worked for them, particularly regarding locations eg deep, shallow, weedy, reefy. i reckon that jamie crawford wrote a really good article in an SA Angler fairly recently, anyone know which mag that was?
  3. good point, i'll have a look at my rod and see if it has drag settings mentioned. It's not that i do fish overly large drag settings anyway, i prefer to thumb the spool, i nearly broke a rod on a ray once when i locked the drag and it did a big lunge, learnt my lesson
  4. yea righteo, thats a better website than i read AF, although along the same lines. so line diameter not breaking strain, not sure i like rod builders using that to rate their rods though, if the rod is suited to 30-50lb then say it, not this PE shit. what if i put PE5 on there that doesnt breaks at 86lb, like the line in the story, and my rod snaps because it is only rated to 50lb, does that mean they will replace the rod because i used the line they recommended? just seems to be a bit silly to me, rate the rod to its breaking strain not line diameter. you guys reckon or what?
  5. just a quick question that might seem a bit amateur-ish but one that i am curious about...when u see a rod rated for "PE 3-5 lines"or something like that, "suitable for PE 10", what do they mean? is it just saying "30lb-50lb line", "suitable for 100lb"? I had a bit of a look around and it seemed that it was the Japanese way of rating lines? anyone able to shed some light on this for me?
  6. i have never caught a shark except for once when i was about 7 and i pulled in the crab net and found a gummy sitting in it, so i've been told anyway, i dont remember. also caught about a million doggies but i dont count them, they just steal my snapper baits. im talking about bronzies mainly, and a hammer if they are in the area. in this thread im looking for any information that people can give me regarding fishing for sharks from the boat. i have tackle sorted, i got a Stella 10000 spooled with 65lb braid and a 40-80lb Terez so will be able to knock over any shark that might come my way, ev
  7. wat a weird looking fish. i have never seen anything like that i dont reckon
  8. i use the top one for everything, caught tuna, groper, snapper, rays with it and never had a problem with them opening. i have had the second from bottom one open on me though so i do not use them anymore.
  9. puffers love pecking the cloth off my expensive jags but havent landed one yet i dont reckon. Also caught the odd occtopus as well
  10. i recently bought my first boat, a Haines Hunter V17L with a new 115 yamaha on the back, its a great boat, quick when its flat and comfortable and feels safe when it blows up unexpectedly. i would def go for a fibreglass boat over a tinny anyday if u can affrd it and with a budget of $20k u can afford a glass
  11. they look sweet, i might grab one and give it a go
  12. i have not much experience in smoking (none actually, not actually tried it, only eaten it), how would i go about making the smoker itself? i know i have to put in racks for the fish to sit on, what else would i have to do? and how would i make it a cold smoker? my missus works in a pub, i could get more kegs, make one hot smoker, one cold smoker maybe? what do u reckon?
  13. i shall come in and try it today if i get a chance luke, got a few holes to dig first :pinch:
  14. i have been wanting to get a fish smoker for awhile now, i love smoked fish and with it being winter and the Salmon Trout taking over now seems as good a time as any to invest in a smoker.now, i have two options, just buy one all ready to go or try my hand at making one. i have gotten my hands on an empty beer keg, do u all think its worth trying to make one out of it? will it be too small?what does everyone use as a fish smoker, homemade or bought? if homemade how did u make it? if bought what brand, type etc?also, i understand that there are two different ways to smoke fish, hot smoke and co
  15. i have heard the scallop thing as well. by the sounds of things i wont bother needlessly killing one, plenty of fish i know taste good i can get round here
  16. popped out in the boat this morning for a quick sesh, went and burleyed up some drops then had a fish for whiting, we managed 2 keepers amoungst about 20 small to just unders. we then had a troll for some ST's, ended up with 19 nice plump little fellas. cant wait til my missus' dad makes a smoker for us out of a beer keg, should be good
  17. Blue groper are from the same family as these wrasse, they also do the same thing as piratepom described with the male being electric blue and the females brown, take the male away and a female takes his place. nature is amazing
  18. i was actually thinking that softy. do u have to bleed rays? if so how?
  19. just wondering if anyone here likes to eat rays? i wouldnt mind trying it, whats the best way to kill it, clean it and cook it? are eagles better than blacks? i have been seeing a few about lately and figured that i might give it a shot. do u just cut the wings off or what?
  20. far out, i hope i never have to do it, been lucky so far. it would be even worse if two points of a treble went into you
  21. yea mine had a whole cuttlefish in its guts with just one bite mark in it. going a bit off topic but i always check my snappers guts, i havent personally found anything too weird but heard of some weird things, Rocknev reckons his biggest from the rocks had a pufferfish in it!once i was using cubed pillies as burley and one of my fish had basically the whole block in its guts, im surprised it took my bait, it was the fullest snapper i have caught!
  22. that would have been one ugly snapper hey 4THA? my biggest is my avatar pic, 11.5kg, that was more of a long fish, it had a big head but not a massive, ugly bump. maybe i need to catch a bigger fish and see a big bump first hand.
  23. i reckon those ones in my post above look bloody horrible, i would be spewing if i pulled up a 6kg snapper and it looked like that!
