  1. So a small artificial reef like a boat someone has towed out at night and sunk will eventually get mussels etc growing on it and supply food for snapper. So when you get a school of 1000 + snapper hanging around this structure just how long would it take to clean off all the growth - IF that is why they were there. After a few minutes all the edible growth could be taken then what is the school to do???? Move off to the next reef??The growth does not just get cleaned off in fact, that is because the fish are attracted to the structure for reasons other than just food. What does happen is that t
  2. Didn't cop a bite, but when I was a kid about 10 years old and living up at Leigh Creek, me and a mate would go bush for hours on end looking for snakes and stuff. I once got 2 brown snakes, not big ones only around 2 feet long into an old long neck beer bottle I found. I held a flat rock over the top and went home to show my mum. She was talking to the neighbor over the fence and I just emptied the 2 snakes on the lawn for her to see. The snakes took off in different directions and my Mum freaked out and screamed "kill them", I picked up a piece of wood and dispatched both of them. I shudder
  3. Hi brenton, well there was a little panic and I guess it hurt a bit while I was trying to cut the hook with the cutters. After that it was more the anticipation while waiting to pull the left over out that got to him. I gave him some ice to numb his hand a bit before I played doctor. Anyway it just slid out very easily and cleanly with minimal pain when he finally let me have a go. Much relieved lad after that though !!!He got back into casting right away and we scored 22 snook and 16 squid in the end for about 2 1/2 hours fun, on a dodge tide too which was a pleasing result all round.
  4. Very hard to fillet actually, could not find my pliers I usually have so had to use my small side cutters, stuffed the first pair trying to cut the hook but the second pair managed to cut it but still stuffed to cutting edge on the cutters, then just pulled it through.Wasn't my hand but a young lad who came out with me, he pulled in a big snook on Friday evening just gone and while it was thrashing around on the deck he tried to grab it   :woohoo: :woohoo:
  5. Like Brenton says, the Duet / Yozuri Mag Minnow 90mm long are great, will catch more than you hope to some times ....
  6. The biggest issue is that the flash is the sole light source when taking a photograph in darkness and obviously the light intensity drops quickly with an increase in distance, I reckon you will have 1/4 of the light intensity if you double the distance so the best way to achieve a half decent photo is to try and make the person holding the fish at the same distance as the fish itself. In the case of your bream photo the fish is held close to the camera and you are either going to end up with over saturation of the pixels on the fish or under saturation of the background (or a combination of bo
  7. In our case fishie, the guy who was certain they were tuna jumping was screaming for a lure but unfortunately we were in a boat that did not have anything suitable and anyway the fish disappeared before we could get ourselves organised.
  8. I was out deep off NH a few weeks back with a mate and his friend and just before sunset we saw a number of "fish" jumping, at first I said they must be dolphins but we went towards them and they were about a metre long, definitely not dolphins, very dark on the top and light underneath. One of the guys with us called them excitably as tuna, he has targeted and caught tuna before but not out off here of course. Me, I have never seen tuna before but he was pretty sure they were and they sure loked like fish to me. We were about 200 - 250 metres from them when they stopped jumping.Like some have
  9. C&E for me (Catch and eat) very, very rare for me to engage in C&R unless undersize or not a wanted species of course. If I have caught all that I want or need I will stop fishing.
  10. Just be careful when your "mate" wants to take a photo of you with his new iPhone or similar just after you pulled that big fish over the side of you boat. If he has the geotagging activated on the phone it will record the gps location for each photo taken???????Worse still he could reach in his pocket and take a picture of the inside of his pocket and he still has the location.

  12. Easy to tell, jam a finger in it's gob, comes out a bit sore it's a gummy, if it doesn't come back it's a 7 Gill. Mouth full of razor blades they have.Or, you could use Ranger's method
  13. Ranger wrote ......This is what I think about when I hear all the talk of secret spots and not handing them out!I find it hard to believe we all worked, did the hard yards, and found these secret spots ourselves, as we now advocate others should do!Think back! How many of your secret spots were actually given to you by someone else? This is why I don't mind sharing a few spots with anyone genuine who needs a hand! When we look at spots like the Culverts, Goannas, Freds, Clarries, Sub Moorings, John Robb, etc, etc, these are hardly what you'd call a secret. Every man and his dog knows of this str
  14. Wanted to try a different way of eating snapper. I did it this way and the result was much appreciated by all the family.I am sure there will be ways to improve on this but I will write down what I did.I used fillets from a 50cm snapper, a piece of spring onion roughly the size of a mans middle finger and a clump of parsley similar in size to the piece of spring onion.Skinned and boned fillets of snapper.Spring OnionParsleySoy SauceBoiled RicePastry sheets for spring rolls (Pack of 20 from shop for $2.20)Egg whiteTurn oven on to 190 - 200 C and pre warmThaw the pastry sheet well for an hour or

  17. I'll stick to using a permanent marker on my big toe nail thanks.
  18. Sand flathead in 1967 on Henley Jetty, we had moved to the coast from the bush and I was fascinated with fishing immediately. I had been trying to catch something for weeks and I shudder when I think of the gear I was using and how I went about it back then. I had no-one to advise me and boy did I make mistakes. I was using a bit of fishing line wrapped around a wooden frame this day, I had a piece of red meat on for bait and caught it just before lunch. My Mum would ride down there with me and sit and watch for a couple of hours while I tried to catch a fish. She said "come on, lets go home",
  19. That is one big Mumma, job well done Thahn !!!!!!!
  20. Well if there is to be a FISH OFF you had better give plenty of notice Brenton to make sure Sideshow's Mum can let him out to play ............................... only joking fella's ............
  21. That's it then I suppose ........ it's a fishoff .....Nothing like a bit of modesty is there ??????
  22. And you are not supposed to handle them any more than necessary, apparently they release a toxin through their skin when stressed. Always wash your hands after handling one of these little crittersSwamp definitely has male ornate cowfish (spotted body with stripes near the tail)The one Tonyb has is a female Ornate cowfish I reckon.Waterboy's is a Male Shaw's Cowfish.
  23. "As an example, the annual water bill for the wash down bay's at West Beach is,I believe, around $50,000.Annual launches from West Beach averages about 12,000 @ $8.00 each = $96,000"I do not disagree that the cost of maintaining a boat ramp might be very high, I do wonder about the $50,000 charge for water usage though. Kym, I am not doubting that someone has told you this figure, I just find it hard to come to grips with. At 12,000 launches per year that is $4 worth of water for each launch. I think SA Water's commercial rate for high usage is around $1.38 per Kilolitre. That works out at aroun
