  1. Beware of getting swarmed by European wasps in summer if your doing it outside. I had no idea there was a nest nearby but it didn't take long before they had me overrun and my missus had to save me with the garden hose
  2. If we all leave a place better than we found it imagine the world we'd live in. Personally I feel if you stay or camp somewhere you could not only clean up your own mess, but help clean up after those too stupid to consider it themselves. If others happen to spot you helping clean another site after someone has left then maybe it'd have a ripple effect. I know it has on me. Ignoring rubbish is almost as bad as leaving it yourself.
  3. Not sure if this program will help you.http://gracode.com/mapgrids.phpJust out of curiosity, why are people converting the co-ords? Is it for using Google Earth?
  4. I love Port Rickaby, plenty of Gar and Squid off the jetty. Never caught KGW off the jetty itself but have from barkers rocks and also YFW, ST's and Flathead (altho no legal lizards... yet!). There's lots of reef to fish off also when the tides right. Hopefully going there this weekend actually
  5. The biggest redfin I've caught was when I'd stopped all together and went to grab a beer. I've found they'll grab it when it's not moving it all, so do a few hops to get some attention then let it play dead for a few seconds and see if that helps. Feels real good getting your first fish on an SP, once you pop that cherry then it starts gettin fun!
  6. Thanks for the tips guys, after removing the entire gizzards of a 28cm KGW due to a little tug to see if I could free the hook (honestly didn't look that bad... well before I got it out) i started cutting them off, including on a Flathead I caught, but I wasn't sure if I was causing just as much damage but as you all have said cutting seems to be the way. I love catch and release fishing and normally haven't had a problem with this, but throwing back a fish you know probably won't survive feels terrible. Glad I know a better way now, I was surprised when I started asking people (outside of thi
  7. Hi guys,Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to handle fish that have swallowed a hook deep? Is it worth messing about trying to remove it or is it best to sometimes cut it off as much as possible and leave it in? Does anyone know about how this affects the fish later etc? There's nothing worse than releasing a fish to watch it go belly up. Even when I use pliers to crush the barb before rigging up sometimes they're just impossible to get out with injuring the fish...
  8. I agree with Jack that financially if you're realistic about your boat there's no excuse about not getting out. I paid $1800 for an old fibre glass 14.5ft bellboy baracuda with a 25hp forward steer and its a fantastic boat and really easy to launch. Does just over 40kmph when its flat calm. People that spend tens of thousands on a boat aren't eligible to claim that they can't afford to use it... I think its just the silly season rush and work that's been keeping the ramps quiet. It's going to be CRAZY in 2 weeks time!
  9. These are probably the hardest weeks of the year for most people to get out and it has been a bit breezy. One plus of being so flat out at work the past few weeks (knowing I don't have time to head out) is sanding and repainting the boat trailer at night all ready for its first season with me at the helm and hopefully my first Schnapps!
  10. Drove down there after work this arvo, done it during low-tide. Got 900 between 3 in about an hour and a half - just using out hands and feet. Occasionally thought we were onto a cluster to find out it was a sand crab haha. The last half hour was crazy none of us even had to move just stayed in the same spot with our feet in the same holes and they came to us. About 1 in every 20 was under-size, so many biggins! 1st time ever doing it, me, the mrs and her friend had fun. Chips and vinegar on the way home, a wicked way to start the weekend I say.... Now to use up all these damn cockles! I'll be
  11. Taking the mrs and one of her friends so that'll get my numbers up but I wont have heaps of time and really just doing it more for the experience. I reckon I paid something like $18 for 1kg of cockles last year (from Ards) for bait so It wouldn't take many to pay for the fuel there... plus sunshine, beach and beer - I can't think of anything better really
  12. Don't know how many you use but half that would probably last me a year haha. Or are you implying I'll have no trouble getting 300?
  13. Going down Friday after work and going to give it a go - never tried it before! I'ts a bit of a hike from here in Nuri but it'll be nice and wa rm and outgoing tide will be almost out by the time I get there, hopefully I can get a years worth as I don't use them heaps but so exspensive to buy when I do want them.
  14. I'm definitely going to try an Alvey one day!As soon as I enquired about the GS9 the bloke said to me if you were stranded on an island thats the reel you wanna have with you. the BG90 felt a bit smoother but I don't mind the clunkyness of the GS9, I said to the bloke I'm not very good at rod / reel maintenance and he thought the GS9 sounded right for me.As for the Shimano Beach Basher he had designed he said they were good (ofcourse he would tho lol), I guess I'll wait and see, not that I've used a lot of kits to compare it too. The combo feels good, really feels like I can pelt out a bit of
  15. Well yesterday I drove down to Ray & Annes and got hooked up!Daiwa GS9 reelShimano Beach Basher 12ft 10-15kg 2 piece rod80lb Jinkai leader and the guy reccomended some STREN 30lb mono for the job. Thanks for all the advice, now I'm about 3 weeks away from my first trip to Salt Creek with all the gear and no idea
  16. I find the original season of Bush Mechanics pretty inspirational at the best of times and probably essential for FWC country haha :silly:
  17. Having only ever driven buckets of crap all my life I think tools and parts to get you out of trouble are pretty important, even if your car is newish and recently serviced - spare fan belt if its not electric, air compressor, tow rope, jumper leads, zip ties, a bit of wire and some duck tape. Make sure there's no play in the trailer bearings, if so take some grease and a spare
  18. G'day mate,I've done a fair bit of spear fishing over on the Yorke Peninsula. I go to a spot called Barkers Rocks other side of Minlaton. There are schools of some kinda fish there (they eat sea weed) that follow the reef up and down, kinda a cross between a bream and a sweep haha. I've eaten them before, tasted ok but I'm not a big fish eater... plenty of meat on them. Other than that there's a few whiting if your a good shot and lucky enough. Flathead too but good luck spotting them. As for being safe well I never feel safe spearfishing lol.
  19. GS9 sounds pretty good! I'm after something pretty rugged too!
  20. Thanks mosler those links have given me a bit more to think about. I'll hit the stores up this weekend hopefully and find something that feels good with the Spinfisher.
  21. G'day guys,Putting together a bit of a list of gear to buy as my journey to salt creek draws closer, gathered from searched info found on this site and others... Have I done my research well enough for a mid range surf setup?Daiwa Sensor Surf 13'/2pc, 20-40lb, 3-6oz - $259 - Is there a cheaper rod of equal quality?Penn Spinfisher 850 SSM Reel - $99 - Anyone own one that can vouch for these as they're quite cheap in price?)Jinkai 80lb or 100lb Leader?Mono line - 30lb - What brand? My main reason for this thread is what brand of mono are people using? I've read a lot about braids and 30lb seems t
  22. I've voted. Interesting tally so far.
  23. 1st legal flathead, 1st legal snapper and 1st mully. I've got a 4wd now for salt creek and a tinny for yorkes so I've got no excuses and will have to keep trying til I've got the photo!
  24. Strangely I actually enjoy making my own berley, feels good to use your old baits etc instead of just tossing it all in the bin... One tip I have is don't use your chainsaw to slice up your frozen fish into blender sized portions... It still stinks! Also watch out for european wasps when doing it during the warmer months, they go crazy over it, even just a couple carp defrosting on the back lawn brings them out
