  1. Spent a great weekend at North Glenelg.I have had casting instruction from certified instructors before but IMHO Peter was much more comprehensive.4 of us attended Saturday for an introduction on what to expect in the FFF certified casting instructor examination.Peter ran through the whole test both the theory and practical .He spent several hours analysing our casting styles and telling us what to expect from the judges when we sit the exam in Cressy Tasmania next March.Sunday was spent doing basic lessons with eight other fly fishers.Peter asked the 4 would be instructors to assist in some o
  2. FSU6144 breaks down as Fast Surf Utility 6wrap 144 inches.FSU4120 is fast surf utility 4wrap 120 inches. So 6144 is stiffer due to an extra 2 wraps of glass and longer.12 foot vs 10 ft.Down side is it is heavier.Hope this helps.cheersRollcast
  3. I don't think anyone paying $150 dollars for a "casting" clinic would be to interested in what sort of fish reside in the water.I'm pretty sure that it is a casting clinic ,not a fishing clinic.I have lived at glenelg all my life and taken some excellent bream and a few good schoolies over the years on plastic ,bait and fly if anyone wants to hang around for a fish afterwards
  4. Hi Chris,Put me down if it is on a weekend.Do you know where the venue is? Peter Hayes did his course at Pinky flat on the Torrens, about the same price if I remember correctly.I could always do with a few tips, still trying to work out the snake roll for my next Tongariro trip.It is very difficult to get casting accreditation.Only the very best casters stand a chance.Pretty sure Haysie had to go to the States to get his masters.I think he is the only Aussie to have achieved it.Stu Tripney is the only Kiwi with his masters also.
  5. If the spool has taken a knock to the end pushing the main shaft inwards, it may have broken the pawl in the levelwind mechanism. This is not uncommon ,and can occur on all spin reels.the mechanism is essentially the same as that on on overhead but has two different helix pitch cut into the level wind shaft so as to lay the line at a different stroke on the inward and outward stroke.A sharp blow often results in the small pawl which engages on the shaft breaking off in the helical groove. It is easy to check. If you wind the handle and the spool and mainshaft no longer oscilates in and out this i
  6. Ive got half a dozen whiting capes ,bronze and silver grade .Iv'e also got a bunch of saddles both whitings and metz down to size 20 ,including 2 grizzle and a cree.I still use them all but would be willing to part with any if some stupid fashionista wants to pay rediculous money for them.
  7. I used and loved alveys for many years, although not much these days.I keep threatening to rebuild my old Len Butterworth MT8144.Stands for multi taper 8 wrap 144 inch long(12 feet).I believe Snyderglass have the mandrills and still roll these blanks. The fine tip allows for casting a large range of weights while the stiff but meens you still have plenty of authority for mullies rays etc.The common set up was a 9 inch but and a long for grip.As a teenager(30 years ago) I caught many large eagle rays off west beach ,the biggest going over 100LB.I still have my old Alvey 650 C5 and it still has th
  8. Had this for tea tonight with yabbies caught yesterday at Morgan.First purge yabbies in saltwater overnight to remove any muddy taste. Some believe this step is unnecessary but I believe it improves the flavour.Remove claws and put aside for boiling in the traditional way as they are too good to waste.Next remove head by twisting off.Grab center section of tail and rotate 90 degrees left and right then pull. This should remove the poop chute and is easier than doing it after peeling. At this stage any surplus tails can be frozen or stored in half vinegar water solution for later.Peel the tails an
  9. Damsel fies and dragon flies are quite different.Damsels are much more delicate and slender in the adult form than dragon flies. At rest an adult dragon fly has its wings at 90 degrees to the body and is quite robust.Adult damsel flies have their wings folded back along the abdomen at rest. Both are in the cordulid family.Adult Damsels come in a number of bright colors many of the local varieties are blue or blue and red.Adult dragon flies are larger and usually duller in color but this varies with species. Adult Dragon flies can be seen on the wing dipping their abdomen in the water to lay thei
  10. PS: forgot to add, Paul from Bitewell fishing bits and etc at Glenalg helped me out when I had a week off recently and I can't thank him enough!I have been a customer at Bitewell for over thirty years and cannot speak highly enough of the service. It is a small shop so Paul can't display everything he stocks and half of his stock is out the back.He carries an amazing amount of stuff including top end Daiwa(saltiga etc ) so don't be fooled by the look of the shops exterior. He opens at six every day of the year except Christmas.Paul is a wealth of good info.Do yourselves a favour and have a look
  11. a bit of pain never hurt anyone.

  14. I have broken my streamdance glx 3 times.Once in Tassie in the national fly fishing titles(I fell over) , once in SA fishing a dam(hit it with a tungsten bead) and once in NZ on the Turangi Taupo River(bead again). Two were replaced in Australia for the $200 expiditor warranty and the other was replaced on the same day in NZ by The creel (a Loomis dealer in Turangi) for $200 NZ.So I am on my fourth streamdance .I always considered this excellent service so I am dissapointed to read the change.I always thought this was a worldwide warranty as it was honoured in NZ for a rod originally purchased
  15. Good to hear your getting a few on the long wand Joe.It is sill early for the Onk ,well done!Even better to hear that the Onk is getting a much needed flush.Rollcast
  16. Nice lookn flies Darren .Wouldn't expect anything less from you. That Muz Wilson fuzzle dub sure is a versatile product.Thank God for Muz and for Peter Morse for coming up with the fuzzling technique.Cheers Rollcast

  18. Get a copy of the video "once in a blue moon " based on mice eating trout in NZ.Every few years (sometimes only once a decade) the beach trees in NZ flower. This is known as a beach tree mast. This results in a mouse plague feeding on the beach tree seeds. This is an eagerly anticipated event as the trout reach trophy size on a diet of mice that try to swim the lakes and rivers looking for more beach seed.Fly fishermen tie deer hair mouse patterns to target these fish. There was two mouse plagues in the last two years. Many huge fish were caught near Nelson and in the Fiordland.I did a quick trip t
  19. Bail Arm spring is often one of the first things to fail on most eggbeaters.Using your finger reduces wear and tear on the bail spring.I'm pretty sure Saltigas don't have a bail return spring which means it can't fail in use. They also don't have the unnecessary anti reverse on/off switch that most spin reels have.

Hes only young..He might actually go out thinking he could catch a Blue fin tuna on it...lolSorry bout that Smart. Good to hear your getting back into fishing. If you havent done a lot of fishing then the 6foot6 3-5kilo rod will serve you well and at Grange you should realistically be able to target yellowfin whiting with tube worms in close off any of the metro jetties in summer. Also bream, tommies, gar and you could even use it to catch squid.I hope this helps. If you want any specific advice on how to catch
