  1. Thanks for the tip reelin.I love calamari.I have soaked it in milk a few times and that seems to soften it up a bit.I will certainly give this a go.Must get down to Seacliff rocks and catch a few.PS. Have a look at the sexy loops posts(Paul Arden) on you tube. They tie an excellent squid tube fly using chuppa chup sticks.I've had great success with this even better than Yo Zuri's.Cheers Rollcast

  3. I use a shefield steel butter knife for Gar.There is a bloke that sharpens and sells them specifically for filleting. The old high carbon steel holds an edge better than modern stainless. For whiting and most other fish I use a Martini filleting Knife from Finland and am surprised no one else has mentioned them.I used to have a superb Mundial that i used on bigger fish and for skinning(I don't scale)but I accidently snapped it.High carbon may hold a better edge but it is a bit brittle.cheers rollcast
  4. I also like chocolate peanuts. When I eat chocolate peanuts I can enjoy my beer in much bigger glasses(which I drink quickly) as chocolate on my lips does not make my beer go flat. Can you buy chocolate coated peanuts at BCF?Will the new shop sell Large beer glasses?Rollcast
  5. I also like salted peanuts but the salt on your lips can make your beer go flat.I drink beer in tiny glasses (lots of them) when i'm eating salted peanuts and clean the glass regularly.I also like SALSA and corn chips which does not make my beer go flat.Do they sell salsa and salted peanuts at BCF?Will the new tackle shop sell beer and small glasses?Rollcast
  6. Orca is right on the money with his comments.Dyneema is a trade name applied to Gel spun Poly Ethylene which is why it is reffered to as PE braid. Most braids come out of the same factories and are manufactured to specification ordered by the parent company .The Australian monofill company in Brisbane weaves braid to an eight pick eight carrier standard.Issue 102 of freshwater fishing has a very informative article "between the lines " by Rod Harrison which exposes all the myths surrounding current "superlines".Pick and carrier are the industry terms applied to weave.Carrier applies to the numb
  7. Beautiful rod you've built there Darren. Those TCX are about the sweetest rods I've ever cast.Good idea putting the recoil guides on, best of Sage and best hardware normally associated with G Loomis and hand built for that extra level of satisfaction.Catching fish on your own tied flies on your own built rod with the best components. You can't really beat that!!CheersRollcast
  8. Hey Marko,I'm giving you a Karma point for supporting Coopers and exposing VB for the crap it is.Rollcast
  9. I use Schneider on my alvey as it is fairly cheep and VERY hard and abrasion resistive even though its a bit stiff.cheersRollcast
  10. Thanks Featherweight,Count me in.I suggest Pinky flat is perfect location same place as Peter Hayes did his course central for everyone.Cheers Rollcast
  11. Hi again just re read your question.I would use a 7 wt floater (scientific angler gps)on the 6/7 with 100 metres of dacron 30lb backing.A bit heavy for bream and trout but best for loading the rod.I would run a sinking 8 wt on th 7/8 and would probably use 30 lb gsp braid for schoolies etc.Cheers Rollcast
  12. Goldy , Forgot to talk about backing. Most fly lines are manufactured on 28LB braided mono with various thickness of PVC depending on line weight, so it is not worth going over 30 LB backing. Also you generally will be fishing tippet under ten LB .I use 30 lb dacron and I have rarely seen more than 10 metres off the spool. Most of my six weight(lamson) large arbor reels only need 100 metres of thirty, with the fly line to sufficiently fill the spool. My Ross evolution mid arbour requires 250 of thirty to fill the spool sufficiently. It is best to try and fill the spool to avoid tight loops which ha
  13. Gday Goldy,Some sound advice there from fishnuts. He is always on the ball.I tend to use scientific angler almost exclusively. The new sharkskin is an excellent line if a bit noisy. The problem with that line is that after long sessions when your skin softens up ,due to water, the abrasive nature can leave some nasty cuts on your index finger after continued stripping of line over it.I have seen two cases of this.I also have a TCX(7wt) and two TCR(5&6) sages as well as a loomis streamdance amongst my fly rod collection.I have found that the scientific angler GPS (general presentation series )
  14. Also black and peacock spider(or any soft hackle wet for that matter) is a handy fly to fish tied off the gape of the hook 2 feet under an elk hair caddis when fishing down and across to caddis feeders on a river during the evening rise just about anywhere.
  15. Believe it or not that black and peocock spider is a very handy fly over here and in NZ.It works particularly well on tailing fish in little pine in Tassie and on snail feeders any where you might find them.Cheers Tony rollcast
  16. Tony,Borrowed a copy of clyde style flies from a close friend today.Interesting to see that they tie a wet version of the ever reliable red tag, normally fished dry over here especially in Tassie to gum beetle feeders.I might have to tie a few of the smallwer mayfly patterns featured.Cheers Rollcast
  17. G'day Darren,I have got my carapace material in both clear and speckled, have ordered some liquid fusion which should arrive in the post soon.I already have the hooks ,fuzzle dub in every colour made and every other material required.Hopefully I should have a few tied up soon to try out on the Glenelg river on Anzac day weekend.Might chuck a few in the Pat as well before I go.It will sure be a change for me with over 90% of my fly fishing normally chasing trout.I am looking forward to a bit of a salt change Cheers MateRollcast
  18. Thanks for your help sourcing materials Darren.Have karmaRollcast
  19. Pooch was a valued member of SAFFA and Fly fish Australia.I was lucky enough to fish with and compete against Andrew many times both in South Australia and Tasmania. He was a fine fly fisherman and a big man with a big heart.Andrew lost his life in a motorcycle accident last week.It was my privilege to call him friend. His passing is a great loss to the fly fishing community in South Australia.Rip PoochRollcast
  20. Try www.mitchellparts.com based out of Canada I thinkCheers Rollcast
  21. Sounds like a terrifying experience Cal.Glad to here you both survived unscathed.A word of warning for any one with dogs. Don't ever let your dog chase a roo into water ,like a farm dam.I heard stories but thought they were urban myths till I heard these two from personal friends.I have friends that live near Macclesfield. One night about three years ago, while walking with his dog and kids the dog flushed a big roo out of some bushes. The roo headed straight for the dam followed by the dog.As it was deep water the roo was able to keep its head above water while it held the dog under with its f
  22. I just got my Summit Club Easter sale (katmandu) catalogue in the post today.UP to 60% off. Talk about good timing. There are three head torches advertised on page 11 including th XP-E Cree reduced from $119.98 to $47.99.The photo shows a different head torch than the one posted by Dutchxfisher but specs are the same,40-175 lumens.Petzl don't come close to that. There is another one on the back page reduced to $35.99 but it is only 15-51 lumens.Cheers Rollcast
  23. Thanks fish nuts I might have to do a few recco trips .Yeah got to agree about the shimano biocraft, excellent value for money ,they are marketed as G loomis in the states.Okuma make a relly good value reel as well.If you want to spend a bit more buy a ross evolution .Superb reels,I've got two and they are much stronger than my Lamson light speed for about the same money.I recently bought a Ross momentum (superb reel) which I plan to use on the Bay of island kings in NZ next year.
  24. Excellent effort there fishnuts. You are a bloody legend.I have caught afew bream, snook,st's,and squid on salt water fly but never a mully. You have inspired me ,I must hit it a bit harder.Without going into specifics ,I assume your fishing down the Port?CheersRollcast
  25. Like your style there carps except I am not a real screaming jets fan.The other three rate highly. While we are on the machine gun felatio , sex pistols theme we should always include a bit of celabate rifles. (Sometimes when I get home I just wanna go out again)
