  1. I have heard that snook are quite a few peoples favourite smoked fish... Well I've never tried some before but I'm smoking some now so I'm excited to try some. I tried the rock salt method instead of brining them which is also A first for me. Will post up a photo once they are done. I can't wait to bite into that smokey, salty, sweet flesh. Stay Tuned!
  2. Off topic but I love yum cha but I havent tried the squid. Put it on my list for next time!
  3. I thought that sofa king meant like the king of his sofa. Like it was someone just stirring the pot and not someone who actually gets out there. That was what I thought of when I first saw it. But now I think Jack might be right.
  4. thanks mate, maybe what I had heard about was the older ones. Might try cancelling the layby and gettin $20 cash back!
  5. I got a $20 gift voucher from bcf and went in there expecting to get some hooks or swivels or something to use up my voucher. I saw a studwick boss 4-8kg rod for $79 reduced from $179. I don't know muxh about these rods but have heard some good things so I used the voucher to put it on layby and thought I'd ask some opinions before going and sheeling out the other $60. Do you guys think its worth it?
  6. We just had a squall come through here with 15mm hail stones and winds every bit of 100km/h I reckon. Blew my letter box over! No trees or anything down though, saw it coming and quickly got out and got washing off line and closed windows.
  7. Did some salmon trout tonight that had been marinating overnight in soy, sweet chilli, lime, ginger and garlic. Sprinkled some brown sugar over the top and smoked them up. Soooooo very good.
  8. They really are everywhere mate, Head for the hills and find some water and you'll get some I'm sure I'll send a a PM of some spots to start trying.
  9. That was quick mate thanks! I will enjoy and sounds awesome. Cant beat prawns and chilli I reckon.
  10. In this months issue of "the other SA fishing magazine" there is a Prawn recipe I really wanted to have for dinner tonight. I left the mag in the truck at work on friday though so now I can't have it If someone could just give me the ingredients I will be forever grateful. I know the method pretty good I think I have been dreaming and drooling over this recipe all week and was looking forward to it tonight. The kids are at grandparents so wanted to cook a nice dinner for the missus and me.
  11. A bit fiddly but on the bigger ones skin them and cut out the dark bit down the lateral line. Then you end up with 2 pieces out of one fillet but improves flavour. Fresh slamon is nice baked and smaller ones filleted but if they go in freezer its bait for me.
  12. Yeah Don't think we are getting many carp flushed down, maybe a few but I think they are always there. Just normally underwater so don't see them as much. Very frustrating time to catch them thats for sure, witnessed it a couple of times myself.
  13. I was gonna go kayaking but now weather and tides looking pretty bad. Was pretty keen to go down to the coorong but after seing weather and tides think I may head up the river somewhere.
  14. A tackle box would be the worst single item to get stolen I reckon. A rod and reel get stolen your probably only lookin at a couple hundred to replace. If you're tackle box goes walkabout could cost thousands to replace all the lures, line, sp's, hooks, sinkers that you have built up over the years.
  15. I got 2 of the rivas for 99cents years ago. Never actually used them yet! But I can tell you just by looking at them they are not quality rods. If you like them let me know and you can have 2 more for a six pack!
  16. There's quite a few in West Lakes. Some have some brilliant colours on them. Be awesome to have in a tank. Never seen one spit water either. Very interesting.
  17. I've thought of putting a collar between the lid and body of an old weber so you can keep the fish away from the heat some more. wouldn't be too hard I reckon.
  18. If you find a mice swimming in the ocean does it count as a marine mammal? Isn't it illegal to kill any marine mammal?
  19. I know snapper wings have been mentioned but mulloway wings are even better I reckon. I think smoking is the same as any other way to cook fish. Simple is best. BUT... My mate did do some marinated first in a mixture made up of just about every sauce he could find in his cupboard. I have tried to recreate it but never come close. My best way is a simple brine, just salt water, then smoked with some chilli flakes and some brown sugar.
  20. The missus is having a girls night with her sister and because she has kinda gone off seafood a bit lately I was actually looking forward to a quiet night (as quiet as a night can be with 2 toddlers in the house) eating seafood til I can't eat no more.Entree was some garlic prawns just fried up quite simply in a pan in a bit of oil and lemon juice, Main course is a seafood laksa with fish, squid, mussels and more prawns. I also have a couple of oysters in the fridge and some smoked salmon trout that I prepared earlier. Later when the kids go to bed I got a couple of coopers vintage chiiling in
  21. I've always thought that fish would feel pain but I don't think that a hook would hurt them anymore than a fin or spine on their prey would inflict.
  22. They are quite common in a lot of slow moving reef fish. You see heaps of them latched on to dog sharks too.
  23. I've never caught a west lakes mully but I would try and fish the times when the salmon trout are moving around. Maybe find a school of ST's and once located upsize the lure a bit. Probably the way I would go about it.
  24. I worked unloading the prawn boats once and that was hard work! I'm guessing that they work that hard the whole time they are at sea. The only things we unloaded were prawns, squid and bugs. I was suprised at the amount of bugs actually. Quite a nice bycatch if you ask me!
