  1. Recs will end up with a bonus out of this debacle possibly, but majorly not good for the pro cray industry at the moment;http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/12/01/3081192.htm
  2. Tako, with respect, please consider...Are you referring to the Vics who come over here to spend their hard-earned Victorian shekels in SA regional communities on food, bait and accommodation? Are you referring to the Vics who would be outnumbered by SA boats 10 to 1 (dozens to one?)Are you referring to the Vics who do not have an opportunity (unlike locals) to hammer the SA snapper population every second or third weekend to bag limit (if they choose to do so) 11 months of the year launching out of Metro, Broughton, Stansbury, Whyalla etc?
  3. And the hundreds of "serious fishing rigs" registered in SA will be staying on their trailers for the next couple of months? - yeah, right...Brent - believe me, it is worth the drive. I speak as an ex-Vic who has been coming here to boat fish for the best part of a decade prior to moving to SA (through choice, may I add). There are many reasons which make the drive time more than tolerable for a 1-2 week trip, and even RipoffLink prices start looking almost reasonable for a KI visit of that duration...
  4. snake - yeah, it`s a crock indeed...We go boat fishing North coast of KI once/twice a year - there you are virually guaranteed to have a fisheries boat come alongside once a trip. You do tend to wonder where their priorities lie, all they need is to read sites like this (and I`m sure they do) to be aware of undersize and overlimit fish and crab shenanigans on metro jetties, to know where to get some "action". Not to mention metro boat launching areas and boat ramps to inspect boats just retrieved (like the snapper story earlier).Just unbelievable A couple of boys in blue in the vicinity would
  5. Hey all, just saw this news item on the ABC about China stopping lobster imports from Ozhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/11/29/3079058.htmAny theories or inside info around?
  6. Fishie - desal technology is evolving, so fingers crossed;3.3. Impact minimisationDesalination technologies have evolved rapidly in recent decades. In a 1991 review, it was found that over 65% of desalination plants relied upon thermal distillation processes referred to as multi-stage flash (MSF), a process which yields high temperature brines, and greater atmospheric pollution (Al-Mutaz, 1991; Morton et al., 1996). Historically, MSF plantshave been popular in the Middle East where rich fossil fuel deposits have meant cheap energy is available (Tulharam and Ilahee, 2007). In nations such as th
  7. Hell, the bright (???) side is that the Aldinga reserve is about to get a whole lot bigger in 18 months or so. Easier to police? Oops, I take that back - with what resources? I reckon it will stop pretty darn quick after the first fishing gear (or boat?) confiscation as result of fishing in a sanctuary zone...Keep making those calls otherwise let the children have their fun for now, they probably can`t think beyond their next beer and have no idea of what is coming...soon...to a fishing spot near them...
  8. JackFlicked through a Uni of NSW paper recently (Roberts/Johnston/Knott) reviewing worldwide studies on desal plant impacts. The short version - many local variables of course, but you are talking salinity levels above normal generally extending no more than a few hundred metres, max. Depending on the type of plant, chemical discharge can be a consideration though.Port Stanvac should not be an issue on balance, but the Whyalla cuttlefish may start curling up their toes(?) if the boffins get it wrong with that desal...
  9. My 2c worth - nothing wrong with Platypus Platinum if you`re a mono dude, but in more recent times I`ve discovered GTR Ultra...is good. The 950ss isn`t a bad reel either, Mr 88 - but you probably know this already, eh?
  10. Have an ancient "shed knife", been in the family for decades and a bit ratty now - "Atkinson Bros" from Sheffield, probably the same sort of thing. All jokes aside, the next time y`all pop in to your Great Aunty Mabel`s or whatever for a cuppa on the way through...could be worth asking the question if there`s no family heirloom or sentimental value considerations?

    new reel

Have a Daiwa Proshooter 4000 (downmarket from the Tierra I believe) - not a bad midsize reel for a reasonable price...
  12. Predictably, it has started...calls for bans, here we go yet again; http://weekly-times-messenger.whereilive.com.au/news/story/shark-ban-call/At least it`s nice to see PIRSA openly state that everything was above board.
  13. Unless it was for their "own use"...warmer weather coming up, Crime Converters aside the garage sale season will be ramping up - on your weekend travels, y`all. Just sayin...Del, sorry for your loss, but perhaps what you have done posting above should be a standard response - as detailed a list as can possibly be provided. Any written down reel serial numbers or engraving markings on any items an added bonus. Spray it about. It will be that little bit easier in terms of covering off the "Theft Recyclers" chain and garage sales, at least as far as someone on here spotting the gear is concerned.
  14. Softy, I know what you`re saying but it could by that stage be innocent Joe Bloggs between jobs thinking he`d scored a bargain at Crime Converters or through a mate of a mate via a garage sale, etc. This is the problem...
  15. Here`s the news linkhttp://www.adelaidenow.com.au/bronzed-aussie-turns-up-for-beach-weather/story-e6frea6u-1225944752103Waiting for the "blood sport" media frenzy this evening on telly...reader response comments so far are not too positive, just quietly.
  16. If you can insert 35.01.92 but not 35.19.389 then I would suggest your unit is set up to only the second decimal place, and does in fact work in decimals of a minute for the last number rather than seconds for the last number - otherwise you wouldn`t be able to punch in anything above 59 for the last number (ie there are 60 seconds in a minute)A workaround for the time being (until you can determine how and if you can change settings on your unit to accept the last number to the third decimal place) is just to round off to the closest second decimal place, thusS35.19.389 E138.18.985 becomesS
  17. Just before on-thread sanity returns...more quotes...http://www.quotegarden.com/fishing.html I particularly like "The gods do not deduct from man`s allotted span the hours spent in fishing"
  18. Ranger, tonyb...WTF?I`m not getting into that discourse, you dudes are way too erudite for this little black duck.BTW people, the Vic RFL was expanded from fresh to salt water for all the right reasons - I have stated previously that SA don`t necessarily equal Vic, however if the same contextual approach is applied then an RFL is a means to an end. And, to carry on the theme of truism trumpeting..."Nothing should ever become too big to fail""Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it"
  19. BDO, could you elaborate on the Middle Beach "boat ramp to nowhere" statement? A sincere and genuine question, because this facility seems to be something the locals have been after for quite some time;http://www.panpa.org.au/ThreadView.aspx?tid=39290I understand Price and Port Wakefield have tidal limitations too, if that was the reason for your rationale? Or are you merely suggesting the money could have been better spent elsewhere to potentially benefit more rec boaties? Hey, wouldn`t we all like access to a boat ramp within 5-10 kays of where we live...$$$$$...And for the record I assure y
  20. Boyington214, you say "I just can`t see any rec fishing benefiting other than fresh water".Yes and No on that one. Your comment is interesting in that Victoria had an inland-only licence for ages, then about a decade ago it was extended to salt water as well. There were various considerations, for an historic overview have a read of the old article in this link. http://www.fishsa.com/fshlcers.phpI`m not saying what worked in Vic would also be applicable to SA in exactly the same way, for a number of reasons, however the basic principles would hopefully apply nonetheless in any decision-making
  21. B@K, thank you for the clarification! Talking at cross-purposes, we were...
  22. B@KWith respect, I beg to differ. Whilst I would not agree with all of the views expressed on this thread, it nonetheless remains a public discussion forum.Formal interested-party advisory group representation to a committee deliberating on a proposed implementation is a completely different matter.
  23. RJ, loved the cynical quip about the desal plant in the audio!Don`t know about empowerment per se, but if RFLs are introduced here I would really like to think the funds would go directly to items such as, at the very least, cost recovery for fishing regs brochure printing, boat ramp building/maintenance, etc
