  1. Highfly your no beginner yourself...Mate best bang for buck is the Aussie Salmon, we can argue the eating quality but geez they rip the line off the reel. 5 -6 - 7 - 8 weights are all good here. Intermediate line with a clouser is all you need. After that I would try for the Drummer with a bread fly, again pretty average fare but go like stink. And then there is Squid, my good mate Foodha used to make his own squid jag fly and do really well with it and they taste pretty good too!Cheers
  2. Make sure you only pin the bait and dont thread it on the hook. If your using a strip of gar fillet you would put the hook through one end of the fillet and leave the rest hanging. With squid just pin it through the top of the mantle or same as gar if using strips. And fish with the reel in gear on a tight line.if you bunch the bait on the hook and leave it free they swallow the lot and because the bait is covering the hook it cant work the way its supposed to. Fish will inhale the bait and sometimes tear it off the hook but at least you minimise the gut hooking. Also fishing with a running si
  3. I have done the crossing a couple of times and only once had it blow up which made the return trip a bit long. If I had been closer to Edithburgh I would havd headed there and stayed until it blew over but I was 1/3rd across already.I think that any wind as long as its under 15knots would be ok for you in a 23fter. Although how much boating experience would also play a huge part as well. Its not a trip for something to go wrong. In the middle of the shipping lanes, big waves and not a lot of assistance.Do a couple of runs down the coast from Nth Haven to Wirrina and Cape Jervis. See how the bo
  4. Well done, I am sure that Karma is waiting for it opportunity to repay you both in good luck.Hope couple learnt a lesson as well about the tides in the port.cheers
  5. Best way to order the bearings is to measure the Internal Diameter, Outside Diameter and height of the Bush or Bearing, then send that to the bearing company. It does not have to be specific to Daiwa or Shimano.Cheers
  6. Go Boca Bearings. I have upgraded a few reels from Bushs to bearings and it makes the world of difference. Dont go Abec 7 or Ceramic just good quality Abec 5 will be enough.
  7. 4THA,Circles snelled work the same as normal suicide hooks. Its the fact that the pull from the drag is supposed to hook them up in the corner of the mouth is not always perfect especially when they are in feeding mode. When this happens its every fish for themselves and if there is food to be eaten then the biggies will come in and inhale it and swallow it as quickly as possible. If your bait is small enough for this to happen and the circles you use are small as well then yes they will get gut hooked. If you upgrade the circle size and just pin it out side the head you reduce the gut hooking
  8. Understanding. I understand that the White was mouthing every little piece of the stern while there was no fish being handed out and that why would the shark waste the energy to jump up and get her when there is enough food to keep it happy in the water. Deluded is a great word for Valerie in that video. Valerie is now a leading voice in conservation campaigns and is used as a hired gun for providing expert testimonials that the media love to use. She would be in bed with PEW, The Marine Conservation Society and many others that are trying to now lock out anglers and blame them for the degrada
  9. I run a leader about 8-10ft tied with a surgeon knot and a hawaiin snap connected to a 3ft rig with double circles snelled to the end and the ezy on the leader. When the leader is to short I find the braid starts to wrap as described. Depends on the conditions though because if it's reedy I use a paternoster with a single line with double snelled circles again.Moggys rig is the go.
  10. Give me a shout J.W, I have the gear your after.
  11. Some great comments, some of you guys should do stand up on Saturday at Rhino Room.A little more background might be helpful here.I try to do this trip every year, I was just interested in what everyone else does with their gear (freight it or take it on the plane) and if I am normal with the amount I take.Previously Virgin have allowed an extra 3 items if they were sports related and as long as none of them weighed over 23kg's. They have stopped that now so every kg over your allocated 23kg is now $15 extra.Creek fishing in Cairns, Game Tournament in the Whitsundays and 10 days sailing with a
  12. About to head off on a 14 day fishing escape from Cairns down to the Whitsundays. Over the last 3 weeks I have been getting all my gear ready and trying to cull the amount that I am thinking I will need. How many rods and reels do you take with you on a trip and how much tackle did you take?Virgin allow me 23Kgs plus 7kg onboard, somehow I need to take clothes with me....
  13. As has been said, you get what you pay for with hooks. When you are using braid there is a lot more pressure put on the hooks and they will straighten or bend and snap even with only a couple of kilo's of drag.Gama's, Owner's, Black Magiks and Mustad's are good in my book. Try it for yourself, tie some line to a couple and hook it up to a set of scales and see what pressure you need to break or bend them.
  14. Get some Cal's Grease as well from Jack Erskines, I find they are better when greased.
  15. Pelagic sell them as well. Around the same price as BCF but look a lot better.
  16. I got my wife to make me some..after a comment about all my fishing gear not getting used I hit back with the sewing maching taking up space in the tackle room...
  17. No problems Brett, I didnt know there was a private group set up, must have missed the memo..Ryan is what I was talking about as you know so to be able to get his assistance in something like this would be a great coup. I have some contacts in the marine industry in W.A so I might have a crack myself.Cheers and thanks for your efforts.
  18. Might be an idea UHF to list the sponsors that have joined and list what they are offering as a donation for SART to keep the transperancey. Perhaps a newsletter every quarter to advise club members of such happenings may be the way?As there is no forum or such on the SART site maybe we could just create a private group on Strikehook?West Australia is currently doing a tagging program running sonic tags in the areas surrounding Perth where they have placed accoustic recievers to track the movements of the migrating fish and also the survival rate of the tagged fish. Perhaps SARDI may be inte
  19. A mate and I planned to do a trip round the top a couple of years back. We were going to go half each in a near new HiLux already kitted out. Grab the engel and camping gear we already had and fill up the rest with fishing gear. I got married, he got married and now its just a distant memory.Dont get too caught up in getting the best of everything, my parents did the same thing in 2003 in a little toyota tercel. Front wheel drive with 4wd select. 14inch rims. a tent and the esky. They did it during the dry and fark me if I know how but they made it to Darwin 6 months after leaving Adelaide. Re
  20. Saw this guy on Sixty Minutes one night. Dedication to life, when you think you have it bad and then you see that it makes you sit up and do something about it.
  21. Saw in your first post your advising that the Cape or Gove and surrounds is where your intending to head.I spent 3 months on the Olive, Escape and working around Princesas Charlotte and upwards with a couple of months around the tip. The West side of the tip can be more fishable due to the South Easterlys that are continually on the East coast. However some of the rivers and systems on the East are great fishing so if you head up one side come down the other.Look if your travelling and stopping in places for a couple of days and just want to have a fish then dont worry about a guide, just fish
  22. Lures,Take lots.Look at the gear you will use to cast them and go appropiate weights and sizes for it. I was using the xraps in the 12cm size with upgraded hooks and rings and they worked a treat. Found that going smaller when the fish were quiter was the best option. Halco Lazer Pros, Halco scorpions Bombers, Tilsan Bass and Barra, Classic Barra etc etc If you look at getting say 5 lures in different sizes and different depths then you get a good collection. So get 5 shallow running in 10cm, 5 in Medium and 5 in deep. Get 5 in 12 cm, 5 in 15 cm and so on. Then get a Plano/Shimano/Boss standar
  23. Really a baitcaster is going to help when your in the creeks making casts to the snags. But if you have one then take it. Personally I would not run a baitcaster with less than 30lbs braid. your bream gear, as light as I would go. The bigger fish are not lways going bunta so catching little trevs and Queenies is great fun on this type of gear.Stepping up from that is where I run the baitcaster and 2500 - 3000 size spin with 30lb. I have custom GUSA sticks for the spin in 7' and a mag bass G loomis for the baitcaster in IMX at around 5'8 This knocks over everything from small Macks to Longtail
  24. If you leave your reels on your rods then make sure you leave extra space between the rod holes otherwise they all get jammed and the handles entwined in each other. Also the spacings are for light baitcasters and spin reels so if you have a couple of Bigger reels like 6500/20000 series or big overheads like a Tiagra or TLD then they take up two spaces.Best set up I have seen was the rods all sat in a holder like set of pull down attic stairs. Pull the cord and the rods would drop from the ceiling on an angle for you to choose your gear for the day. No surf rods fit in this though obviously.

    Confession

We all make mistakes, some even admit them...When I got the 4500 we decided a rip down was in order to see the internals and check what bearing seemed to be a little dry when winding. oiled a couiple of the bearings and put it all back together and it was lumpy and grinding like a coffee machine. Took it apart about 4 - 5 times after that just relocating the crown on the pinion until it was smooth again. Thought it was going to be sent back to the shop for a minute or so..i still service it at home but now I mark the position of everything to put it back the way it was.
