  1. Sounds like the Mayor knows what side his bread is buttered on :cheer:"The FV Margiris is looking to fish for redbait, jack mackerel and blue mackerel"3 points...1. Mackerel???? Trawling??? I may be an old saltie and fishing may have changed since i was out there in anger BUT isnt mackerel fishing done by "purse seining"??? I thought this ship was called a trawler and trawled???? (on the bottom)????2...If it is purse seining - i doubt that they will concentrate on mackerel in SA when their arrival will just coincidentally coincide with the annual blue fin tuna migration across the bight and
  2. Chris, yes thats a very good point that I didnt quite understand till now - I was under the impression that common sense prevailed and the vessel would only be allowed to fish waters that were open to all fishers and fisheries....So in that case it is simply not worth having marine parks - there's no point...As for the boats coming over here - from what i know they have been coming over here for a long time now - its just this super trawler? Seiner? has grabbed a lot of attention....This company has been fishing the world (including australia) with its small boat fleet for years...As for snout
  3. Interesting....Dont get me wrong - although im appalled at the idea of a super trawler at any time I suppose I have to in a way congratulate the company responsible for lol foreward thinking....From what I can see - the company has been trawling the world for a long long time with many smaller boats and has decided rather than using a number of small boats to put all their eggs in one basket and use one huge boat.....And again although this boat seems like a world killer - in a sense it is better than what was happening before....Just for instance imagine they were working 10 boats - thats 10
  4. I dont know if its just me but I can cast mono a thousand times and have no probs but with braid something will always happen (twist or knot) and that just isnt on....30lb mono (Maxima Ultragreen) for me for mullies (beach) and same for casting the 110g lures....
  5. Gday mate, I own a yota 4runner v6 (dual fuel) - bought it at 138,000 and it has now ticked over to 450,000 and all I have done is put gas heads on it and extractors - it has gone anywhere i have asked it and power to weight it is the best thing I have driven in the sand - pulled out patrols, landcruisers, landrovers, and driven straight by the more powerful (heavy) vehicles in the soft stuff...Ive owned patrols,(heavy - had pathfinders (S#%T!) had a landcruiser (like driving a house) and when the opportunity for the rv6 came up i jumped on it! great on the highway - 2500rpm @ 110k's and i can

    Fish ID :D

Spot on there Kat, and the more you spend time out on or around the water the more stories you will have...(A good quote for fishermen).."The impossible or the BS is just something you haven't experienced yet"......

    Fish ID :D

wow kat, you're one of a chosen few! not many can catch strongies on bait - they're usually speared by divers....will have to call you a master angler!
  8. lol sorry for shouting, had my headphones on......
  9. JETTY FISHERS REMINDED OF RESPONSIBILITIESFisheries Minister Gail Gago has ordered an immediate education campaign to remind recreationalfishers of their responsibilities when fishing from jetties.Ms Gago said she was concerned at media reports that sharks were possibly being lured towardsshore in populated areas.“Berleying is illegal if animal blood or bone is used, however it is not an offence to dispose of fishwaste in the water,” the Minister said.“Fisheries officers are closely monitoring the situation at metropolitan jetties, and along withFishcare volunteers, will acti
  10. "Australia wide and since records were first kept, there have been a total of 639 shark attacks, with 190 of them being fatal". (Thanks Ranger - great post)Looking at that stat I am wondering what the stats are on lightning strikes on humans compared to shark attacks....The saying goes "you have more chance of being struck by lightning"????Seems like a pretty big number....
  11. Amazing! 11 pages and going... although everyone is and has put up good arguments over the pros and cons of shark fishing on metro jetties and the beurocrats will in the end - have their way one way or the other,I'm going to dumb it down a bit and although some might not agree - and thats your choice - give you one mans opinion...1. The old fella that took it upon himself to use his age and "local-ness" to abuse the shark fisherman for fishing on "his jetty"???? - broke the law.......If you are angry about life for whatever reason - see a therapist! dont take it out on others....
  12. It was a pretty open question so here's my opinion..1. mullies are ambush hunters so target a spot where there is structure or eddies they can hide behind...(a bait fish will swim along then get disoriented when they are swept into an eddie - mullies will take advantage of that)2. catch your live bait in the spot you are fishing - normally the predators will be targeting the bait in the area - normally a quill float and a bit of pillie or dough will suffice to catch a few baits..3. rigs depend on where you are fishing - you want your bait to swim as naturally as possible - anything from no wei
  13. lol....I especially love the bit about shark fishers understanding of the world is superior to all other people - lol I wouldnt go that far but understanding sharks and their habits?? That i would have to agree with....seriously, I wouldnt let my kid swim normanville beach anyway - its too close to the gulf current (shark central) burley or no burley its really pretty dangerous..Lol but a great place to fish!
  14. The arguments for this matter are wide and varied and common sense prevails - personally if floating a large bait out I will say I'm fishing for kingies rather than saying I am fishing for sharks - saves a lot of arguments.... But for arguments sake - let's ask the old guys that fish for tommies off these jetties and complain about sharkers what they use for burley - lol i would just about be certain that they add tuna oil or a stinky fishy smell to it - so who is attracting the sharks??? Get a person using a 1 inch burley cage with a tuna oil mix - fishing for a few hours - with an offshor
  15. Gday PikkOn,As a general rule for mullies off the beach an fsu 5120 wrap is recommended...Yes they are a bit stiffer but if you have a large fish on they come into their own and if something unforseen happens you can put the hurt on without worrying about snapping the rod...Snyder makes a good fsu 5120 - and if you want to go for something a bit longer and more easy to cast - a wilson fsu 6144 is a good all round strong rod....Best talking to your local fishing shop to explain the wrap...As for reels - and there are many - I am old school Penn 9500 (eggbeater), they hold a lot of line - have a
  16. G'day Afishyfish,Yeh it all started with "Jaws" - portrayed them to be mindless - one eyed killers, they're not mate, they are a very smart fish - this vid on here says a lot - as the shark goes ballistic toward the boat - one of the guys slaps the water with that pole (once) and the shark is gone! (if it was mindless and one eyed it would have ignored the noise and commotion and eaten that fish) Old fishos used to swear not to use chain on their hooks because the clanging scared them off - and (dont try this at home - I had plenty of practice) will have no hesitation to jump in with one or tw
  17. Gday U4L,yeh I lived over there for 20 years myself - cut my teeth (no pun intended) on pointers over there and learned a lot about their habits - I have no reservations in jumping in with one as long as i am on scuba - they are actually a very placid fish! (as the old saying goes - its the one you dont see that gets you)....But if you know what to listen for you hear them before you see them (they grind their teeth) no other shark does it - I'm still blown away even though Lincoln is the pointer capital - no one has been taken in boston bay! Seen plenty in there - even one cruising the town j
  18. I use 8/0 Gankamatsu (sp) circles and 30lb nylon onto a 60lb flourocarbon leader on an ezi slider.. used the double hook and the single through the lip - in my opinion the single through the lip keeps the bait healthy longer and swims better - and great side jaw hookups...
  19. G'day peeps,I've said this on previous threads about the same situation, YES shark habits are changing and anyone that wants to deny this is a walking/swimming appetiser for these great predators...The ban that came in for pointers all those years ago has worked - there are more pointers around now than there has been since before pro fishing started for then in the 40's.....Problem now being lots more people/boats/tourism/food all targeting and attracting these fish.....I have had a lot of experience with these fish and they are a fast learner - probably why they are at the top of the food ch
  20. Gday. These days as soon as I buy a new salmon lure I chuck a single suicide hook with a bit of red tube on the shank... (brown hooks seem to work better than the red).....Gave up on trebles years ago, rarely lose one now....
  21. spent 20 years over on the west coast and caught some monster mullies, giant reds, tonnes of tuna, massive bream, hand fed bronzies off the beach (gunyah) caught a few big ones off the shore as well, metre long flathead, xos salmon, kg's and yellowfin, monster kingfish, abalone, crayfish up to 5kg. basically you name it....In fact, it got pretty boring - whatever I wanted over there I just went and targeted it....Took a long time to get to that point but yeh....I'm loving the fact that I now have to start learning again - seasons, tides, baits, locations, migratory paths, barometric pressure,

    Penn SS vs SSM

Gday Plankton fair enuff mate, I have a few overheads a gold abu 10,000 (which I use a fair bit) as a second for the mullies but with my fsu 6144 and 9500ss combo I can cast an 80weight grappel waaaayyyy further and it's a bit easier to cast it at night as well....To each their own I suppose Cheers

    Penn SS vs SSM

Yeh agreed I don't think they'd last long...Big mullies are a pretty unpredictable fish - i've had them come in like old boots and I've had them basically melt line off my spool and I've had both with one fish - you want to be sure you have a reel that can handle a bit of unexpected pressure just in case you have to lock it up or put a lot of pressure on the fish (steering it away from a reef for instance)....lol not really sold on the graphite either Thanks again...Cheers...

    Penn SS vs SSM
