  1. Cheers Plankton.

Keen on giving it a crack & find doing those sort of things myself rather rewarding.

Always nice to try a learned approach otherwise it quickly becomes a frustrating mess when you dont know what you are doing.

Now just need to find some time.....

  2. Are you metro?

In Adelaide most of the landbased snapper spots require a long cast, so a rod 10 to 12 foot is useful. Most surf rods that can cast 3oz to 4oz will do the job. Graphite is nicer but more prone to breakage.

I use seajiggers as well as rebuilt Mojiko Surf cannons.

    Im using a Penn Prevail 12' 8-12kg 2pc, running 30lb braid on a Penn 560L. Rod was 'round $170 i think?

Sounds a little heavy? Yep but landbased fishing into the reefy snapper spots require you to drag em up farily quickly plus need the 3-4oz lead to hold bottom.

Also double as a salmon bait rod.

Much more fun on a 2-3kg rod & 6lb braid but not realistic off for most landbased & jetty fishing!

  3. Wanting to look after my spin reels, im interested in maintaining them properly...just dont quite know where to start.

Other than the obligatory rinse and wipe down after a session, thats about all i currently do.

Ive an not-so-precious Penn 560 im happy to have a fiddle with (heard they are an easy one to strip too).

What are folks out there doing; stripping, cleaning & regreasing, re-stacking drags ect?

Where do i start other than undoing the screws and trying to note where everything came from  ?

Any vids out there, recomended lubes/grease ect?

  4. Thats a long piece of string there mate....

Be worth specifying what style of fishing you're considering or whereabouts youd be using it:

    • Inshore/offshore
    • spin, overhead
    • lure, bait or a general purpose outfit
    • target species;snapper, whiting/snapper, snapper/shark ect

An idea of what your want to spend would be handy & what reel youre considering matching it with too.

  5. Nup but is on the 'things to do' list..... thinking the coming wading season.

Gonna have a decent crack with the Gulps & Marukyu Isome's targeting YFW.

With YFW i work worm baits accross the flats, more a slow retrieve tho, maybe with a few faster jerks thrown in. Will be trying similalry with the SP versions.

  6. Similarly too, would have to be my first Aussie salmon back in my teens too. Some 20+ years ago, chasing KGs with the ol' man & uncle in his tinnie inside Boston Bay.

Cant remember but probably a few KGs, tommies and squid but the fun started as we approached the Axel Stenrose Ramp.

Birds were working the surface. Could still clearly remember reading Blue Fin by one of my then fave childhood autors, Colin Thiele, but knew it wasnt the SBTs!

Salmon were working a school of bait fish up against the shore. My uncle (the fisho) set me up on one of my crappy slices on equally crappy glass rod, reel and maybe 10lb mono?  Powered the tinny towards the school, cutting the engine as we difted near and past.

It was pure madness, there was a big school of around 1kg fish in a feeding frenzy! With zero experience lure fishing, I was getting smashed a fish a cast, complete with text book acrobatics and thrown hooks. I was landing them nearly faster than my uncle could bleed them!

Being the KG obsessive he asked what i indended on doing with them, after only landed a few (in his eyes, salmon were and still are crap eating). I promptly said id happily clean and fillet & eat them. Must have landed nearly 20 fish after 3 or 4 passes before the school started moving off and uncle decided it was time to take the boat out.

Took around 10 fish and I cleand & filleted them all. The best tasting salmon ive had!

My first taste of salmon on a serious bite.....now easily my favorite fish to catch on the super light gear.

  7. Cheers guys, when I fish off the rocks, the burley starts to flow and I'll see what comes along.

Also is there any chance of getting eagle rays off the beach at Hardwicke or towards Flaherty? Never tried for rays before but have suitable gear.

S**t yeah, tho ive only dicked around and caught doggies & banjos, around Corney Pt & just west of Turton. All similar 'looking' areas tho.... tidal sandy shallows out to the weed line.

Rays love cruising those tidal flats esp once its dark on a high tide.

From a quick reccie at Hardwicke at low tide once, there are plenty of shallow gutter systems channeling into the shore

    Hot tip would be:

    • Suss out a nice looking gutter/hole etc at low tide
    • Wade out to your chosen spot on the rising tide around dusk with an onion bag with some frozen burley blocks (decent sized ones so they dont melt too fast), anchor with a brick and attach a float with a glow stick. Then you know where to cast once its dark!
    • Chuck out the big rod for rays (have some wire trace options for any toothy ones) stick it in your holder, sit back and drink beer (or whatever's your poison).
    • No need to cast it to the moon either, just near that glow stick.
    • 2nd light rod to target smaller stuff (KGs will come in here and get big that time of year) while you wait for the big rod to go off. It will!
    • Fingers crossed sea lice arnt around. Demolish bait in 10-15mins.
    • Pick up your burley stuff the next morning.

Did the above burley (i think 2-3 2lt blocks of mixed goodness) idea chasing mullet one May, just west of Turton towards Pt Souter. Mullet came in around dusk and were thick, getting a fish a cast. As it became dark the rays came in. Heaps of them!

Had a bunch of big smoothies going spastic over the burley bag, smashing out of the water  & all sorts of smaller rays. Became impossible to catch mullet as they were too excited and took anything, even the tiniest bit of cockle on a #8 baitholder!

  8. And dont overlook Hardwicke Bay itself. It might look rather flat & featureless, there be rays in those shallows if that's your thing. Anywhere where there's a bit of a hole or gutter will do.

Get a nice high tide after dusk, chuck the bait out, rod in holder & sit down in the deck chair, few beers. Right in front of the shack too!

Each to their own but id rather be doing that than rooting 'round on the Turton jetty and having to drive back. Turton Tavern's pretty good tho.

I have also been bitten off 3 times in a row right in front of the Corney Pt boat ramp one june night, wading in the shallows after a big blow. Seems the sharks must have followed the big winter KGs in close to shore, was barley above knee deep.

  9. Rocks pretty well from Corny Pt thru to Pt Annie. Have a bit of a reccie if you've the time & find a nice platform with some depth.

Funnily enough generally caught more impressive drummer and only small sweep thru here.

Corny point - rock, nice holes west from the lighthouse

Berry Bay - beach, rocks north & south. I like the rocks to the Sth more, depends on swell.

Point Annie - beach & rocks (can be a nice little gutter up against the rocks directly south of the pt)

Dust Hole - long surf beach, good walk  & cast option.

Berry & Dust Hole can hold some good gutters, DH usually better as it's a higher energy beach but longer steps down to beach! Both much closer to Hardwicke than Browns.

Gleesons is 4wd unless you're up for a bit of a walk (dirt but 2wd-able untill you need to cut thru the dunes). Some deep sand thru the dunes & along the beach side. Much more energy & beach structure towards the northern end. Never fished it, was a reccie mission when nothing was on the chew.

  10. Agree with Plankton, i dont mind sitting in the dark. Although i thought light could attract baitfish in too?

Certianly want one you can dial the light output right down so its not too detrimental to your night vision.

Red light is great. The only one i use is a spotlight for other outdoor pursuits so proabbly not what youre after but its an actual red light LED not white with a filter.

I just use a headtorch on low power for baiting, rigging ect and then sit in the dark. Usually falling asleep.

A red LED area light would be ideal. Just the issue of finding one thats any good with a market saturated with imported s**t.

Also, blood looks awesome under a red light, comes out black as!

  11. Your rig's been what ive always used. Alas i have never personally landed on on the popper but have had plenty of bite marks that are not crabs!

Try a few different colours. mate's fishing either side of me have landed on poppers, green seems to be more effective at times.

Have found that sand crabs can be partial to SPs too. Have had (unscented) squidgies out instead of a popper to have them come back in pieces due to crabs.

  12. I've got something similar tattooed on my body.  Can measure the size of a legal garfish on it.

Don't use it often as it's a bit "awkward" pulling it out in front of other blokes, then measuring a fish against it.

I hate making others feel insecure, if you get my drift.

Sounds like when i pop a viagra prior to a snapper sesh :D .

  13. Nup and the ol' adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind......generally rather wary of cheap anything off Ebay.

Even if it there were some good reports out there i'd be dubious of the quality control, the next 1000 spools could be s**t.

Not much $ to try but would be interested when a decent bronzie jumps on!

    All else fails:

Recon the one in your link is there? Not a good review/comments for the heavier stuff.

  14. Mullet mix from Tackle shops, bread, cockle, worm, gents.... As mentioned they will eat anything pretty much... I find they feed hard when in Tight schools...

The lower half of yorkes should be firing now with the big mullet run... I always did well along the beach behind marion bay Caravan park!

Agreed. Certainly on the chew down that way from what i heard.

Nice big high tides that hit around dusk work really well. Have found that a great way to get action is wade out and drop a bag of burley , say an hour or so before high tide & before you want to fish. Idealy into a bit of a gutter or hole but shallow flats that a well under in a good high tide are also perfect. Trick is that there is not too much wave action or the burley disapates everywere. Tie on a float with a glowstick too so you know where it is once its too dark to see.

Have bagged out this way plus you never know who else will come in after the sun goes down, chasing that burley and mullet school.

  15. Venison heart. Holds on really well. Have used road-kill rabbit loin in the past and that works a treat, for bream too.

Have found that if you can burley them up well enough they get pretty excited and couldnt care less what you throw on the hook.

if not then a patternoster with burley spring/sinker is the go.

    Mince.  ;)

might need to thicken it a bit with flour, semolina etc. Has a habit of falling off easily.

  16. Klan isnt it? Pretty funny those ones. Seriously noone likes jizz in their face especially from ones that size!

Little sad to see all those beautiful dead fish...tho guess thats how it all used to be done.

Love the "mako in balsa raft" (17).

  17. Nup as ive been lazy and buying redgum sawdust from the local.

Have some nice seasoned olive & plum wood ive been meaing to drop the saw thru but havnt got there yet. Both smell pretty good when they go up the chimney!

Apparently apple & cherry are rather nice too.

Anyways im just using a cheapie stainless box smoker & STs (and tomatoes to make bbq sauce)!

  18. Bugger, cant help you there then :( ,

I too have a shitty ol' JW rod (my initial surf combo) that i really dont like 'cause its a broom stick..

Also have the Prevail Surf 1202MH, at $179 a tad more than $150 tho! Havnt had the opportunity to hook anything decent on it yet either.

Alas a black hole in tne surf rod market here.

  19. No first-hand experience in the matter at hand, but im sure the 'Dynamix Beach Basher ' will get a few mentions.

Not plugging anyone for any particular reason but a Ray & Annes custom rod:

One i will most certainly have a look at next time im out that way.

Love some feedback from anyone who as given it a good 'bashing'.

Another question tho, what do you intend on targeting with the rod matched to your Penn?
