Thanks for your tips folks. We had a great weekend and whilst we decided not to take the boat due to the forecasted wind warnings we hit the salmon on most beaches we tried and the squid were willing on the Haslam jetty. Pic attached of some of the thumpers that we caught on the trip. Felt like hanging on to a road train! Great fun

Hi swoopa, Streaky is on our next away agenda & love the area.We normally fish out around the bushes out to Dashwood, depending on the wind direction you can fish the bushes , Eba Is & Pigface IsThe tyre reef isn't too far out either, 34.43.919, 134.14.814.Never fished the bay, I know you can catch a feed in the bay, even snapper.Goodluck Moggy

Poached in a white wine can make it really good, and stops it drying out too

jharli wrote:Depends which end you are trying to get going! Smoking is one of my favourite subjects.Sawdust is very expensive, so if you know a woodcutter or similar you will save a packet.Only use quality hardwoods, and avoid treated timbers or pine.I'm not too fussed about the type of sawdust. Connoisseurs will all tell ya their favourites, but I really cant tell that much difference.Soaking the sawdust in water or wine will mellow the flavour, and that's good fun to experiment with. The fish must be brined (8 parts water/1 part salt) for 1-3 hours to extract excess moisture from the flesh, and you can also add brown sugar to the brine to sweeten it, but I like to sprinkle my fish with brown sugar when it goes into the smoker to give it a sweet glaze. Once the fish has been brined it needs to drain and dry before going into the smoker. There are now two choices in smoking.Cold smoking: Takes a long time. The fish is preserved and dried, so it will keep.Hot smoking: The fish is cooked as it is smoked. It retains moisture, but it will only keep for a few days.I'm a fan of hot smoking, and I've bought an Anuka electric hot smoker. These things are made in New Zealand, they are fantastic and convenient, but they are very expensive.Oily fleshed fish such as Tommies, Salmon Trout and Slimey Mackeral is the best for smoking, but ensure you bleed the fish immediately upon capture.Good luck with smoking. It's all experimentation so have a play, try different herbs and spices sprinkled onto the fish, and ensure you have a quality Boags Premium or ten on hand as the perfect compliment to freshly smoked fillets!

tried out 2 of these lures today land based with Moggy23they have a good shallow dive on them and can be cast a fair distance, i got the colors SHIW & SHRH and caught an st on eachthey travel through the water nicely and float on the pause, they are available in a sinking model also i have put in a diagram of the magnet system inside and how it works found them reasonably priced at the $15-20 range so anyone lookin for a couple of decent landbased st lures have a chuck with one of these Moggy23 used several different lures including a daiwa double clutch which seemed good as wellcheers 4THA

Agreed, sad story indeed and is one that unfortunately repeats itself all too often. Rock fishing would have to be one of the more dangerous forms of our sport but really must be conducted with company.I am sure this bloke would of been enjoying the solitude of fishing by himself and having some time out to himself. Problem is when things go wrong there may be no one around to help. RIP cobber.

Well ended up taking my lad out overnight in Whyalla. Was a bit blowy with seas around 1.5m so we sheltered in a bit closer to the light house than we would of liked. Put the rods out and had a cook up of snags, sauce and bread. Apart from 4 annoying Port Jacksons we didnt have any luck and finally got some sleep. However at 5.30am we woke to find the seas had settled a bit so we ventured out to our spot and at 6.20am my son landed his first big red. Ended up a touch over 8 kilo and gave him a great fight. Think I have recruited a future fishing enthusiast. Got to see sunrise over the Flinders Ranges and see that look of excitement that can be described on your kids face when the reel is peeling off. Cheers

Rickster followed me out to the Goannas last Sunday morning and did a great job in the 1.5 mtr plus seas.I also have fished out of Rickster's 530 and found it stable and very well laid out for the fisherman

been out wide in Ricksters crusher a coupla times now and loved it even bagged out on whiting which locally these dayz is rare in itself you dont seem to get as many bangs and crashes that come with most tinnies due to the shape of the hull he's done a few mods to his which i think make it even better as well cheers 4THA

As Just_Me has stated i own the 530c and have found it to suit my needs quite well, i updated from a Brooker fisherman C/Console as it was not family friendly. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have and will give you info you wish to know. Bear in mind all boats have their good and bad points and even they depend on what the individual is looking for. ;)Feel free to PM me if you wish.

Never say never is my "advice " Keeping in mind that different locations 'work" differently its hard to give a definitive reply !rthe lowlyu rip is a known Snapper haunt and suppsedly the fish may still feed there during a slow tide. It may also be that the rarea's like Cape jwervis that's normally got fast currents, and is easier to fish ona dodge.Ive caught decent Reds on close to dodge tides off Adelaide, so maybe the same can be done over there too.Maybe try asking locals like Rocknev or Scaley Tom ?
