Trouta 6
Heading down tennyson beach tommorrow morning, allways used a pattanosta rig, but just been reading around (while playing poker) and seems running rigs the go, is that the case? Just the 1 hook on a running sinker? I allways liked the 2 hook approach as i figure more chance but if running is the go i might try that, was down semaphore jetty last night from about 3am till 7.30am, didnt see a thing caught apart from a coupla little tommies that i saw, so might hit the beach tommorrow morning at tennyson
southie THE BANGA 2,304
running rig..... ball sinker b4 a swivel then trace line to your hook mate lightest sinker possible
Softy 2,991
Used split shots yesterday about 30-40cm above the hook, nothing but toadies.Went running ball sinker today down to the hook, and success FINALLY!
Trouta 6
Thx boys will try the running rig, yeah i was down tennyson early last week, first cast patta rig, caught a legal, then 2 smaller ones then the wind came on a bit (arvo fishing) then nothing but 3 puffer fish, will let ya no how i go:)
Jack. 10
running rig..... ball sinker b4 a swivel then trace line to your hook mate lightest sinker possible 2 As light as possible as said, and if using no trace as Softy says, make sure the sinker is again as light as possible. On a super calm day, even flick a worm or clicker out unweighted. The more natural the better as the YFW can be very touchy/spooky at times.I would think the paternoster rig is much better suited to the KG whiting.
Del 245
have tried both some split shot crimped about 12" above my single hook and also a running sinker down to the hook. had success with both ways. i think if ya worms angled right.. you'll get a few bites no matter what rig. i just like to keep it simple. aldingabeachfisho 1
off topic but have u tried poppers for them
Jack. 10
off topic but have u tried poppers for themI guess still a bit off topic(might start a new thread) but do poppers also work in the deeper water, or just real skinny water??
Blake 9
Hey,I change depending on the bait- really soft baits like cockles (when I'm feeling rich) I use a paternoster so that there are 2 baits in case one gets robbed before I get to it. For really calm, shallow water and particularly for nippers, I use the running rig with a light sinker over the swivel. Going to head out this arvo actually. Can't wait. Ale 301
What do you guys do about the braid when using a running sinker?Do let the sinker aslide along the braid mainline down to the swivel or run a extra long leader of mono/fluro as per plastic fishing , but with a swivel say 4-5 ft beofre he hook?
Del 245
i always have a mono/fluro leader attached. then attach a rig to the leader.
Trouta 6
Got down Tennyson about 5.30am, right on the turn i think high tide was 6am, fished that permanent gutter??? right in front. Got keeper first cast, coupla little nibbles then a mullet, then a throw away mullet, then walked over sandbar then first cast another YFW, came home with 2 and a mullet, left about 9am Used a running sinker with size 6 hooks and tubeworms, smallest running sinkers i found in my t/box, 1 cm in length, was getting a lot of drift/pull to the left so have brought some size 3 running sinker for tommorrow morning, hopefully have a bit tighter linesFun Morning Jack.

snake 1
running rigs good but the trick is a moving bait, cast then slowly reel it back in and ya should get a few...yummy little bastards!!! p.s. fresh bait works the best! cheers snake
Guest Brent61southoz
i found that casting into the drop-off works well , as the yfw come into feed on small dead/dying food off the sandbars , using paternoster rig with loose line so the bait moves with the current.wored great this arvo.brent
Guest Brent61southoz
from sea to tummy in 2.5hrsbattered yfw n saladbrenti'm going tomorrow 4.30am
Tako 0
I always use a running rig with either one or two hooks, have been getting some good sized fish on soft plastics lately too.
gbowe 0
i had never landed a YFW untill last weekend using a running rig with live worms. i would cast out at first and was not getting a thing, untill i drag and bang the sinker along the bottom and within 10 seconds of doing that i would hook up, so doing that is my best advice... urhookedfish 12
The reason that draging across the sand works is that its stirring up the sand and the whiting are thinking okay what food item has disturbed the sand, they come in to investigate the puffs and see a tubie.its all over. worm down the hatch..so great technique.
