urhookedfish 12
If your targetting snapper then I would run with the 2M leader. This is what I have used and it works a treat. Make sure you trim the tag ends off your joining knot well though so it it doesnt catch much as the knot passes off the reel and goes through the guides.Cheers,BRett
southie THE BANGA 2,304
i use the rule of thumb of the length of my rod that im using but i think it varys depending on peoples liking and the set up they use etc... but general rule of thumb for me is the length of my rod will be the length of my leader.. Kat 0
Ok so while i was looking around Kmart today i saw packets with "leader" on them..I really dont want to sound too stupid but what exactly is a leader?and what is a trace?I really have no understanding of terminology.. I just fish.but of course i want to know these things.
Ranger 48
Leader/trace are just different words for the same thing.Leader is just a higher quality line which generally comes on shorter rolls (50 or 100m).I prefer a longer leader, also around a rod length, so that the leader knot sits just short of the reel when I'm ready to cast. After tying a few dirrefent jigheads during the course of the day, naturally the leader length with shorten as the day progresses, and I always tie a new leader at the commencement of a days fishing. Kat 0
ahh brillaint. thank you thats helped alot. :)one guess what im doing today :PIm guessing its to absorb any any shock loading etc
Piranha 76
Im guessing its to absorb any any shock loading etcThats right Kat the mono or flurocarbon has a lot of stretch so it does help as a shock absorber, but the main reasons would be for abraision resistance because mono etc is a lot tougher than braid when it comes to reef and toothy fish and it's also a lot less visible to the fish than braid.I use anything between 60cm and a rod length depending on the species i'm targeting:) cheers
statesquider 0
I generally use a rod length as it saves me having to retie the leader when i get snagged. Tend to get through a few lure loses before retying a whole new leader on.
Mr_Willy 3
I think it can be too short, but it can't be too long. I normally go a rod length and a bit...And as Ranger says, it is normally much shorter by the end of the day after tying and retying on jig heads....
Murdoc 0
i like it really long so when i wind in my bait the knot is backed way up on the real, i find i get a really good cast that way. somtimes even after the cast theres still trace left on the real cant get more abrasion resistant than that.
