  1. Cheers for the info Darren! Looks like a top finish on those flies. The web site must have just been updated because I was looking there yesterday to see if they carried it, and missed it.I'm also guilty of shopping there before, very friendly advice on the phone, good prices, everything you can think of for fly, and great delivery rates.I've placed an order one day and had an Express Parcel in the letterbox next day before too. No two-week wait from the US! Thanks again..
  2. There's heaps of info on the net for fly-tying.Figure out what species you want to target, and do a search for Flies for that particular fish, and I'm sure you will find a step by step tutorial to tying some. They list hook sizes, materials used, colours, and usually with pics through the process. This site has helped me a lot with Saltwater ideas.. Try on Flyand they have a Species / Fly indexAlso a gallery of fly pics..Good luck.
  3. Wow! Top stuff Darren! Great looking fly, and an excellent step by step tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to put that together and share. They definately look the 'goods'..The Liquid Fusion looks easy to use (no mixing) and a top finish too.Better than 5min epoxy I've been using.Don't suppose it's available here locally anywhere?Keep up the great work!! and tight lines!
  4. Just did a quick search in ebay for 'Epoxy Pigments' and 35 odd listings came up. Some are multi-colour packs, and looks like a little goes a looooong way. Good luck with the finish.
  5. That's an interesting finish and just adds a little more of a personal touch. Thanks for sharing!Camo epoxy comes to mind :laugh:And a nice offer too for a rod turner.. Bonus!Bunnings used to do battery operated and 240volt bbq rotisserie motors for a slow spin. And the pigments they use in the video they also sell online from their US store. You may be able to track the same product down here in Aus or off ebay..Good luck!
  6. I should have added too..You can use some Clear 5min Araldite/epoxy and put a small head on them too.Just keep turning it till it goes off to keep it even, doesn't take much.Helps to get them under.
  7. robfish wrote: Yup, they do :PI had a sinking tip line when I used them and I found the Deceivers took a bit to get to sink.Even put a couple wraps of light solder near the head and that helped.Had some good hits on green/white and blue/white deceivers in the onk, and some big swirls around the flies on the surface, and wakes behind the fly when retrieving.Gets the heart pumping
  8. Yep, Highfly is a wealth of knowledge, always willing to share and some top suggestions there too.The Onk is a great fishery for fly fishing as well.Baited Breathes, clousers, baitfish patterns in white/pearl, chartruese, pinks, seafoam green, pale blue/white are all a good starter.Once you find the salmon trout, they will hit just about anything you offer.. Had a session on some new clouser type flies..Bream, + schoolies will hit any of the mentioned flies so far.I use mainly #4's and #6 hooks, and my personal choice is to close the barb, just in the off chance 'I wear one' as a new earing.
  9. Been said already, but the Yozuri Mag Minnows in a mullet type colour have always done well for me off the breakwaters when they are around. Not unusual to get hits and taps all the way back in, and even had hookups at my feet before in minimum water.Top fun!

I heard about it for ages, this mystical journal.. and then one hot day on the boat during a well-earned break.."IT" appeared in front of my face as if by magic..Do you want to hold it?? :woohoo: The Fishermans Holy Grail was in my hands, and I paused.. and reflected on the moment..By the way, what did the entry for that day read?? Perhaps you better not repeat it in here LOL
  11. Nice work Darren! Good looking fly and bound to get some attention.Any of the minnows I like and they seem to work better for me so far.Keep us posted with any results when you get them wet!
  12. Nice way to spend an RDO Mickyj, very relaxing except for the raised pulse-rate :woohoo: Sounds like a schoolie to me and a shame he didn't get hooked properly.Had the same thing down the Onk numerous times when bringing the fly in fast along the surface, a wake appears behind it, or a swirl and a grab for a second (mini tug-of-war) then nothing lol.I'm usually off with the fairies and not paying 100% attention anyway.Won't be long now! Keep up the good reads..

    Bream Flies?

G'day rangfish.. I've tried heaps of patterns and colours in the Onk and West Lakes, but for me, these couple have had the best results so far.If I have these on hand (and some spares) I start out feeling confident of a bit of interest after a few casts.Minnow/Baitfish type flies..Without rattle..and with a 10mm glass rattle..and a bought fly from Pirie St. did ok too..similar to a Baited breath..Ebay and online shops have heaps (if you can wait) but you can't beat tying your own and scoring a fish 2nd or 3rd cast. Means you must be doing something right. :PTying is not hard,
  14. Onka? Someone say Onka?I should check in more often because I missed this one I would have dropped down for a look-see and dust off my gear.Haven't had a flick (besides the oval) for a few months now but was thinking of trying to get out very soon depending on the Wind-Gods..
  15. Nice to know there are some local ones around tony, but I already have heaps on hand.. Bunnings was great for silver bead-chain, and you get heaps from a metre length..Nice for small minnow-type Bream flies.. And last order from the US I grabbed some packs of RealEyes in the smallest size, 4 colours..Plus flouro pink and chartruse bead-chain for a try..All you can fit in a US post envelope for US$11 shipping. I just find it easier to shop on the computer (when it works) than driving all over town now.
  16. 10/10 to you pwilly for trying to do the right thing and return it to its rightful owner. From the sounds of it, it would be sadly missed.A lot of people would just use 'the Finders Keepers' rule.Someone packing up in a hurry and left it on the back of the ute / or roof of the car, and realised when they got home. :icon_cry:Most of them end up IN the drink from the drag not being loosened. :PWell done
  17. You're on the board mickyj, good stuff!I've also been giving the surface lures a good think after talks at work. Seems sometimes thats all it takes to stir the bream into action down the lakes when all else seems to fail, or the fish are nowhere to be seen. The lure guys have been having a bit of fun lately on surface poppers and bream, so a surface fly should get the same attention.Keep the results coming..
  18. Cheers guys..I was hoping to give them a bash on carp saturday, but didn't spot one in town walking both sides of the torrens and using polaroids.Strange, must have been deeper?and pretty sad if you can't catch a carp! ;D I did lay down a thread on the hook shank, then soaked that in superglue before pushing the tail on..Then just bound the front and sealed it.Just something different with what I have on hand.
  19. Got these 35mm s/p tails off a guy at work a while back, and thought they may come in handy in the future.Well, with all the carp action lately on little black furry things, and furry things with red tails, I stuck these on a #6 Mustad tonight, and hoping to get out and have a bash at some carp over the weekend just for some reel-screaming action.. :PWill post any results..
  20. Just finished watching 'Gillies Introduction to Flyfishing' dvd, and would recommend it.A lot of info on everything from knots, gear, casting, retrieves, flies etc. for salt and freshwater.$5 +postage well spent I reckon, and not just for new fly-fishersGood on ya grubb! :icon_e_biggrin:
  21. Well what a difference 2 weeks can make to an area.I must have walked a couple km's up and back down the Torrens and didn't spot one fish today :-\The water looked almost black, even with the flow.2 weeks ago it was heaps clearer, and one pond I counted close to 30 fish cruising up and down within a minute or two.A couple of brutes as well ;)Today, zilch..The flies are in the box, and I'll be getting updates from my brother.I do want to give the carp a go sight-fishing, sounds like fun.
  22. Cheers tonyb for the info..That sums it up nicey. All my flies so far have been for the salt (bream mainly), and all synthetics and epoxy. Those couple I whipped up after the success with the carp johnwalkley had the other week.. (more stuff from the sell-out)Hoping to nail at least one tomorrow with that method.Fingers crossed..
  23. Car's packed, so off to the bro's Sat for dinner and a catch-up..PS.. It's just an excuse to go check out some ponds in the afternoon with the flyrod, before a great home-cooked meal.. Cheers Sis.
  24. This one too by Lefty Kreh helped me out heaps when I was starting.Work on a technique down the oval for a while [glow=red,2,300] 'minus a hook'[/glow] for starters, and it all starts making sense and coming together. Then go try it on water.I think about $30, and off the net here in Aust. I do have the one Dave mentioned in the post, as I can't get enough fly stuff. :
  25. top answer mickyj ;DI couldn't get enough of 'A River Somewhere' when I bought it13 episodes in 2 sittings! :icon_eek: Loved it.
