This is just a nine minute musical photo slideshow video from a few trips I had to a small "no mans land" tannin stream.. I doubt anyone has ever fished this area apart from me..
Sit back and relax while you watch it & hope you get some enjoyment from it..
    cheers

Best way of knowing if you are going the right direction in purchase is to youtube or google the info and decide from that..
Some i got with RH & LH some not used yet.

As TL explains most long term casters find a happy medium with spinning reels, but after going through hundreds of casts in a day i just found it easier to switch to low profile bait casters.Light weight no wind knots, and having shoulder and upper back issues i switched from RH to LH winding using light weight rods and reels which are pricey. Now depending on species i can cast 3 to 4 casts per minute, just gave me a longer trouble free run in continuing fishing.

Vector maths says larger and longer spools will have less friction, but I think it's very small in percentage terms between each reel size jump. I think the rod makes way more difference. Most importantly the distance, height, and size of the first eye to the reel. But overall I expect the rod length and loading ability is likely going to be the most important thing.
I've bought a lightweight baitcaster for the same reason @SurfcaztR but yet to use it. I look forward to birds nests as I didn't go with a DC cos I thought the sound they make would give me the irrits .
But I'm with TL, I think weight vs retrieve speed is my most important consideration due to lure fishing needing way more casts.

With everything else being equal, longer casts boil down to less resistance on the line as it leaves the spool. Essentially the less times the line coming off the spool has to either change directions (long vs standard spool) or less times it is wrapped (spool diameter) the less resistance.
Whether these factors are tangible or not is a different story.
Personally I enjoy the effortless casting of my 1000 on a UL 7'6 over the same reel in a 2500 on a standard 7'3 - they both cast the comparable distance (noting different blank actions). However, if I could find the same balance on a 2500 I would take it. Higher retrieve rate and in my experience less wind knots than on my 1000.

YD1..Yes i did see that B4 in one of your posts and considered that self made spear. But i had this $50 BCF gift voucher burning a hole in my pocket and $40 later walked one out the shop instead. And I did remove the barbs.

Nice one👍 Love the set up

I was convinced by an old flounder guru to make a 2 pronged, heavy spear with long spear shafts and no barbs.

Its a serious weapon that worked much better than I though it would.

He reckoned barbs on the shaft, just slow you down when removing fish and I found that to be true aswell - and the extra weight really helps drive the spear home on those "One inch Punch" style jabs. Especially on boney headed flathead

Your set up looks great 👍- just putting up another option for the diy spear.

originally I just bent some pvc pipe and strapped a cheap dive torch to it - but things got out of hand pretty quick after that - I put a bend in the shaft so I could hook it over my shoulder when I needed 2 hands to removed fish from my spear

Light weight and hydrodynamic is much more important than I thought it would be when putting this monstrosity together😉

I ended up buying the one these skinny yellow battery operated ones the guys use in the video but lost interest in it and never used it -

I just turned it on then and the batteries still worked so it has very little drain over the years

I have a Maxer 27 SMD LED Prawn Light. It's reasonable.
It's light weight from the perspective that it doesn't require a large battery, as it runs of 3 D cell batteries. It's reasonable from the perspective it has the light output you would expect from something utilising 3 D cell batteries.
I don't use it for gigging, I use it for wading the shallows at night for crabs or dab garfish.

Yeah you cant get a better endorsement than that👍 -

There really is some magic going on with those shirts

I was a bit Skeptical when Buying my new fishing shirt - It didnt make sense these new shirts could be cooler than cotton.

I wouldnt have even bought it if I didnt have a voucher, I didnt know what to buy with.

I was always told cotton was the best  - and for a long time it probably was - but the breathability claims of cotton now have some serious competition. The newer polyester shirts are well worth checking out.

I just went outside and blew air through the 2 sorts of shirt - Forcing air through the Polyester was about 3 times easier than cotton

40 years ago when starting  a lawn mowing service we only had the choice of wearing a shirt, polo shirt or T shirt,20 years on the polyester shirts came out as pictured above and they made a huge difference.Working at 8-10 homes a day in 30+ deg heat and walking an average of 10ks a day during summer anything that made a difference was a benefit and todays franchise mowing contractors wear those micro vented shirts in there daily jobs because it's cooler.

Surprising to read so many think swivels will undo twisted braided line no matter what size or brand of swivel is  used it won't work.Yes on Mono or Fluorocarbon line but not on braid.

To get even line lay you take the spool off, remove the drag washers and fit a narrow nut and bolt through the spool. You attach a variable speed drill to the bolt and let the line go on evenly at a desired speed, this way isn't much different to a shop spooler.Once the spool is back on the reel you can spray some line conditioner or i use Johnson baby oil as it works just as good.
Every cast you manually flip the bail wire over by hand then lift the rod tip to take up any slack line before starting to retrieve, make sure the line looks to be in place before turning the handle.
