Not good for much - but they are good for some applications.

Obviously dont paint them if you're pretty sure you'll lose them first go - and use at your own risk😉

I was just thinking about the process and why it took so long for the maggots to take hold and what you said rings true.

The reason cat food in the can wasnt ideal - is it took way too long to let off decent smell.

The foul stench of death is what brings them in and my cat food in the can was too well preserved.  It was basically odourless for the first couple of weeks.

But when I was sorting the maggots out from the paper - flies showed up from everywhere.

If I need to do it again, I'll empty the cat food into a bowl, so its fully exposed and rots quicker.

Or carp fillets stink up pretty quick - yeah I'll probably use those

Seeing the flies show up when it had reached its true "Stink Potential" was an eye opener,

Yeah I'd love to get their feed back if they are still hanging around😉

Thats great news - thanks for the update Doobie

Yeah the method I saw had a much bigger bit of plywood on a slant and bright sunlight hitting the maggots to spook them out - I'll try and find the vid

Found it - who says only weirdos breed maggots😉 ( Fast Forward to the 1 minute mark to see his set up)

Yeah theres plenty of situations and rigs I wouldnt use them on - but having something thats heavy, cheap and sinks can be handy in certain scenarios.😉

Yeah I initially started thinking about alternative weights after donating a few surf sinkers to the local reefs. We use marker floats to define the edge and losing a few bucks when they got snagged stopped making sense pretty quick.

But fishing ocean rock ledges is another place where I've wondered if donating lead is the wisest move😉

If it works, why not, although I couldn't be bothered lol.
A bit heavy for my Gar float too

(Caution these fellas will rust and drip rusty water - you've been warned - some people fully tape them or dip them in paint so this isnt a problem)

Good for spots where you lose a few.

With rebar off cuts you can get for free at any building site - a bit of wire - some tape - and zip ties - you too can have these beauties.

You will need an angle grinder with a cut off wheel aswell - or a hack saw.

I pulled on the wire and it got to 13kg without budging so I stopped pulling.

Edit  - Just tried it without the tape and a couple of zip ties and I got to 13 kgs without breaking aswell

Well that was pretty painless - ended up going to the specialist feed store only to find they no longer stocked bran or pollard

Thankfully both Coles and Woolies have it.

Stink wasnt a major issue until you got your head in the bucket - and now they are chilling in the fridge

The maggots have been transferred to another bucket with paper underneath and on top - I've been told to leave them in for 2 days before getting them into the fridge.

The smell is non existent until you put you head over the bucket - so this method is going well.

I'll have to deal with the smell eventually but so far so good

Just went out to check the maggots and wasnt expecting much😲

Should I transfer the contents of the can to newspaper and stick it in a bucket now - or leave them in the can for a few days

Good on you for persisting with the cat food, but after this lot I'd be trying some 'normal' fly food
If you saw some hanging and no eggs laid .... then the cat food is not working imo.

Yeah I'm giving the Cat food another try in a more blow fly rich environment - saw a few hanging round today but no eggs yet

Our next door neighbor used to breed gents to sell. He would hang a snapper frame in the shed about 5 feet high. Under the frame he would have a large tray of pollard/bran. After a while when the maggots were at the stage when they want to bury themselves they would drop off the frame and fall into the bran. As the frame wasn't sitting in a bucket it and had air circulating around it the flesh tended to dry out and not stink (as much). Not much fish flesh fell into the bran either and was easily picked off the top.

ok so here it is in its final form -

I tried to get away with using a single nut and no springs - but the rig had a tendency to self tighten when too much drag was applied to the spool.

So I made some springs - then some more refined springs -then added a second locking nut and now it actually works like it should
