  1. Thanks for the info lads. This is going to be a second surf setup so the Daiwa’s are a little pricey, but the Penn seems like a good thing, and with the sale on the prevail at the moment I think it’s hard to beat.

  2. I have the prevail 12-20. And while I’m yet to use it, the build quality is great and it feels strong as hell. Came highly recommended by two separate dudes in two separate independent stores. For the price I believe you can’t beat it

Thanks Mjadeb1984, I can get the prevail for the same price as the allegiance at the moment so I think that’s the way I’m going to go. Just wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in the handling/weight characteristics between the 2.

  3. Evening one and all, I’m looking for recommendations regarding a new surf rod. Has anyone had any experience with either the penn allegiance or penn prevail? I’m looking at either the 10’ 10-15kg or 12’ 12-20kg models in each variant. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated,

    Ryan

  4. If you’re looking for something mid tier just to get the job done and be reliable, I would highly recommend the Shimano raider rods, either in the rack or bream model in line class 1-3kg and a sienna 1000/2000/2500 reel. This combo will be more than adequate for many years of fishing and well within your budget.

  5. I run a tub, similar to TL. I also use a scaling bag with a toggle on the drawstring as my catch bag. You can easily drag this around your waist ..tho the rays, bronzies & doggies (shark) can get rather curious!
A mate uses 2 of these from Motackle:  https://www.motackle.com.au/yellow-beach-shoulder-fishing-bag.html
1 for tackle, 1 for fish and lure fishing mostly. Pretty cheap..100% waterproof is a bit of a misnomer!

Cheers for the info undies, I’m going to have to get the kids to knock me up a tub one weekend as a little project, some of the ones I’ve seen here have obviously been well thought out. I’ve heard of a few people getting followed by bronzies out here but this far I’ve only ever been ‘harassed ‘ by banjo’s lol keep up the good work mate

  6. Some good ideas there ,and maybe look outside of the box, I have had a tool bag ,that I use when fishing creek beds , along the beach or rivers, made out of canvas , simple bag with 1 main flap ,a main area and 2 pockets on the inside ,I have had this bag for 10 years ,and still going strong .
I was a boilermaker /welder so has to take some hard knocks ,tools etc .
I will try and get a picture up , as it is simple ,and works .

Thanks lofty, I know the type. I’m a diesel mechanic and have a similar waxed canvas bag I used for smoko that I’m sure will outlive me.

Thanks Chuck, I already grabbed an Ugly Stik bag, but will consider one of these as a back up for the price.

  8. G’day TL, thanks for the input mate. I had a Daiwa sling bag in the past which was great for rocks fishing. I had considered a fly vest due to doing a bit of kayaking as well, but ultimately settled on the wading bag. I enjoyed reading the wading tubs thread, it looks like you’re all set, I especially like the rod/landing net holders. I’m very keen to give the arrowz a workout, seems I got on the bandwagon late as they are sold out nearly everywhere. Good luck with it mate!

  9. That’s a bloody good idea mate, I’m pretty sure I’ve got one of those maglite loops in the shed. How often do you need to oil/wax that leather knife sheath?

  10. They really are quite robust, my only suggestion would be if you’re going to maintain it yourself, use a decent amount of rubber grease or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the seals each time you strip the reel. Once the seals dry and perish they’re useless. Having said that, mine are still supple and sealing perfectly.

  11. G’day HeavyD, thanks for the detailed reply and info mate, I’ve been meaning to get onto one of those Alvey belts, seems it’s compatible with every Alvey product, something a lot of manufacturers could learn from. The bait bucket looks particularly good, being that it’s versatile for use with bait,Berley or tackle storage. Thanks for the photos mate, glad to see you out there getting amongst it, especially with your lad.

  12. I’ve got a nasci 2500 that I use for tommies and mullet, and while I wouldn’t want to leave it submerged for any length of time it does cop spray pretty regularly and has seen a few dunks. I’ve been really impressed with it tbh, I regularly give it a bath in freshwater to stop the salt drying on it and it’s basically still like new with the exception of a little fading.

  13. Very good advice from ChuckTseeker, I guess you could also use some ripstop canvas if you had it laying around. I got one today at a very reasonable price, but if I’m using it I discover I’d like it laid out a different way I may well end up making my own as you’ve suggested. Thanks for your input mate!

  14. Thanks for another good suggestion AR1, this is what I’ve been doing for the last couple years. Only recently did I see a wading bag and assume that if it’s task specific it must be a good thing.

  15. I have the "ugly stick" bag.. Why? I liked the little pocket with the box for lures.. and the material looked a lot tougher than the Alvey one..
Thompsons is my local.. Been there a few times last/this year.. always get one or two silvers with lures and always lots of undersized ones.. You can thank the local Pro Fisher for raping the area.. I wish they ban them in metro...... Great spot for it..

Thanks for the comment Mike, I’ve enjoyed reading your fishing reports. Where did you get your Ugly Stik bag from?

  16. Back in my younger days while spearfishing 10-20m deep and sometimes 300m out like horseshoe reef and myponga beach would have 2 bronzies circling and fish tide to my weight belt makes you nervous, only seconds spent releasing the fish. It's the pointer that scares you the most..No shark shields back in those days,as to knee or waist deep less worrying

You’re a braver man than I mate, that sounds positively nerve racking. Having said that, it sounds a lot like parenthood, and I’m probably more likely to get bitten by my 3 young children haha

  17. That’s one hell of an encounter mate, Thompson’s is my local too. I’ve seen plenty of small bronzies there, but I’ve only ever seen them steer well clear of myself and other fishos. If that was me I’m not sure I’d have the stones to keep wading.

  18. I’ve just ordered an atomic arrowz 7’ 1-3kg rod for whipping surface lures at YFW on the flats up here, but until next summer I think it’ll be relegated to garfishing duties. That’s unusual, normally a good slick will bring them in.

  19. Possibly one of each for different conditions,if i were to move around a lot at the waters edge then i'd have the Alvey bag,Thursday i was chasing mullett at PT Noarlunga Sth and stood mainly in one spot knee deep and that's where the scaling bag was more convenient for me.Different bags for different conditions

    How’d you go mate?
