  1. I use the old Starlo Shorespin with a 4000 size shimano reel running 15 or 20lb braid to throw 40gm lures, and its the bomb. Im not too sure on the aquatip if they're graphite or not? If not I would check out some other similar rods for not much more money. I think there are about 5 different models of the 9' rod in the new Shimano catalogue(aquatip right up to tcurve revolution) and a few different max lure weights between the models. Also look at the dynamix shorespin from Ray and Annes. Any version of this 902 rod for around $90-120 would be the best value for money light to medium lure cast
  2. If you're keen on a new reel the twinpower fc reels seem to be getting discounted at the moment. I think they are a higher ratio. I reckon you're on the right track with a 3000-4000 size reel. I use a 4000 shimano nexave on a starlo shorespin and love it. Not a fancy reel, but does a good job. As a few boys have said the when casting light lures the light graphite set ups with braid will outcast most big surf rods.
  3. Gun berley for sure. If you can be bothered defrosting and opening them, salt or brine the meat so it stays on a hook and you've got a gun bait as well. Might be better than paying a trillion dollars for cockles. We've caught plenty of whiting on oysters.
  4. I had heard mixed reports on these reels, but there was nothing mixed about those replies!!! Thanks for some straight up answers there. What about the rods? Steer clear as well?
  5. Like most people have said, both brands have some really good styles and colours. I prefer the gulp worms to the squidgy. Land based I reckon anything you target will eat a squidgy wriggler of some size. With the stickbaits, minnows, shads and fish it might come down to picking a few colours/styles and seeing what works best for you. Asking the tackle shop what works for your target species in your area will help too. Berkley powerbait do some good minnows as well. There are sooo many different brands and styles for you get addicted to and spend your hard earned on, so good luck!!!
  6. If your looking at a lighter class rod, i would go a 3-6 instead of the 2-5. Look at a Pflueger Trion or Berkley dropshot. Both should be $100 or a smidge under.
  7. For around $100-120 i reckon the shimano raider would be a good option. The spellbinder for 99 would be a winner, but I couldn't find em on the RnA website. Did u see em in store for that price Branzino?
  8. Put a phone order in today as well. Got some dvds to watch on the tractor!! Thanks guys
  9. Gotta be happy with that mate. I think it all worked out pretty well for ya
  10. Im with Plankton, and like the slim beauty knot for joining leader to braid. I then use a clinched blood knot or uni knot to the lure/swivel.The fact that youve gone to a thin braid might be a bit of your trouble, so maybe the suggestion to double your braid before the knot might be the go??
  11. I reckon smaller metal slices as well. Upgrade the trebels to Decoy jigging single hooks and your laughing. I havent used plastics, but a few from Lincoln have done alright on the squidgie flickbaits from what ive heard.
  12. Im in. Thanks to the compleat angler crew for another free comp. A great guesture from a site supporter.Cheers rooboy
  13. Im the same with my small lures and squid jags, using decoy egg snaps in 00. They weigh nothing so i cant see that they are any different to tying a loop knot. With snapper soft plastics and chrome slices for salmon i use an uni or clinched blood knot from the leader straight to lure.If im switching between bait and lures for salmon i have a good quality snap swivel that is tied on with a uni knot. Using big lures, i dont think the swivel makes any difference to a hungry fish.
  14. Gotta agree with a warm meal on a cold night or winter session on the water.Always have a pack of chips or savoury bickies on the boat. Im a bit patial to a cold chook as well.Definitely NO BLOODY BANANAS
  15. Yep. I use the bucket with holes in it over the side of the tinny, works fairly well. Gotta remember to pull it out of the water when you move spots, ive forgotten to do that before!!
  16. Cheers all for the replys/discussion. I ended up passing on the rod. I was thinking along the lines of Rollas, the heavy pe rating might have been too much with a rod that short.I was trying to convince myself that it would be ok for bottom baiting, as once you have the fish on the rod you still have to play it out the same way. Whether you caught by bait or jig.Probably wouldnt have used it enough anyway. Rollas i woldve chucked a 12000spheros on itCheers rooboy
  17. Good to hear everyone is keeping an united front. As said before "keep the pressure on and dont trust the bastards"Kingsley I reckon you are bang on the money mate, these sort of tactics seem to be common with all government departments.Worse part is if we think it looks scary now, how is ten years down the track gonna look??
  18. Hey mate i live on the EP, about 45mins from Elliston/Sheringa. I would be more than happy to have a fish with ya if you end up coming over by yourself. End of July would be perfect coz seeding will be well and truly over on the farm, so a few boys might be keen on a salmon session.Depending on weather/time could be a fair chance to take the tinny out in Elliston as well.Just an option so you dont have to drink beer on your own!!!!!!!
  19. Yeah, that is kind of what im thinking too. I would jig for samson and kings, and chase these as well as tuna and a few other reef uglies with bait. 5ft just seems so short, but i suppose it depends on the action of the rod.
  20. Gday guys and gals. A bloke is trying to offload his 5ft jigwrex onto me, and im sort of keen. Thing is i'll only use it for jigging maybe 3-4 times a year, the rest of the time it will earn its keep bottom bashing.Im wondering how a short rod rated to pe8 will go with normal bait fishing for bigger fish. Would it be too stiff? Im not gonna get to play with the rod and test it for a while, so was hoping for some feedback on here.If anyone has used this rod, or has any info that would be awesome. Its a spin model, 5ft, 1piece, pe8 ratingCheers rooboy
  21. Mate they look the goods. I always admire a craftmens work that i dont have the skill or patience to even get close to doing myself. How long did they take ya to do?
  22. Having said all that, when you buy your reels im sure you will get the best advice you need for the line as well. Unless you shop at BCF:laugh:
  23. I know where your heads at the moment. Its hard to work a trade off between breaking strain and line capacity. I reckon Platypus make some of the thinner monos around in Platinum and Lo-Stretch. Not having held a saltiga surf before, i cant comment on their capacity, but i think it is one of their selling points. With the mono I would reckon you should be able to fit a good amount of 30lb(around .45mm dia) on one. The 50lb Platinum is .55mm dia. which would eat into your capacity, and maybe casting distance being so thick. Although a good hunk of lead on the end of your line will help! In brai
  24. Look the goods. Now lets get a pic of em hanging out a fishies gob!!
  25. yeah, knot wise im with plankton. I also like the double uni, and use this and the slim beauty on the heavy stuff sometimes. The albright is an awesome knot, but can annoy me going through the guides.Reckon tbone is on the money, if we could get thin dia. in heavier breakage mono, problem solvered!!I do have lo-stretch on a spare/hack reel, and dont mind this for mono in the surf.Spend your coin and get a saltiga surf, you know you want to!!!!!
