  1. top stuff mate run the reel under a bit of fresh h20 before you head out as well especially if ya usin braid B) cheers 4THA
In my experience it's not that good to just run a reel under the tap' date=' a heavy flow of water will often drive sand' date=' salt and water into the reel where you don't want it. It can also wash away the oil in your bearings and levelwind gear, plus the old fibre washer drags on Abus perform very poorly when wet. I use one of those multi spray hose nozzles on the "mist" setting and just give the reel a very light spray after a session to get rid of sand or salt. Another good trick is to tighten the drag all the way when washing down to keep water out of the drag system, just don't forget to back it off for storage when the reel is dry otherwise you can compress the washers and shorten their life span.50-60m casts are quite good if you're using a boat rod, if it's a beach rod then with a bit of practice you can maybe double that. ;)[/quote'']yeah i didnt mean soak the reel just a light spray to take the tackiness off it or use a reel and line lubricant cheers for correcting me plankton 4THA
  2. Shoot them down you say???Cant see the point of tagging & releasing if all you are doing is signing the death warrant. Its no different to the bad old days of slaughtering them & seeing them piled at the dump. Not to mention a waste of time as your efforts will be for naught! Commendable thoughts but pointless if not done properly. The last time I checked' date=' tagging was not so much to make one feel better about being out there catching, but more a tool for measuring & charting growth rates, movements, & perhaps to lesser extent population. As for a video showing how. I know that there is plenty written about the subject, and that a search of youtube will probably bring something up also. If in doubt, I would suggest the group contact the source of the tags for an educational tutorial of how it should be done to increase the chance of survival. It would also be interesting to know what percentage of tagged snapper both from this or any other group are recaught as this may actually show whether the whole process, in regard to snapper, is flawed. Finally, before I'm accused again of shooting down or perhaps being predjudice to one group only, I understand a similar task was undertaken in regard to bream a year or so ago. As far as I can see, or find, there have been no recaptures from that sample & thus no information gained from the process. From what I can ascertain, the fish were held, in some cases for many hours, in live wells rather than tagged & released. This would have to place a lot of stress on the fish and whilst they all supposedly swum away seemingly quite healthily, who knows what happened to them after that. I find it hard to believe that they all simply left the system.Again, tagging is a great tool, but pointless if not dome properly[/quote']sorry to bring this up again UHF but what LBA has written here opened my eyes up a bit as to the releasing process as we normally bring them on board un hook and send them back without considering using wet towel etc, so as much as it may have been a criticsm its gunna make me think about how we go about it next time as i know yourself will do cheers 4THA

  4. when berkley released there range of power bait sp's some time back now a mate of mine told me i had to have a session with him chasin bream near the west lakes outlet, he's told me nearly a fish a cast   hmmm, really ok what the heck.i went to sportfishing scene purchased a berkley dropshot, a shimano sienna 2500 and yatesy spooled it with some 2kg line, an assortment of sp's and jig heads were purchased and away we went within the first few cast we were into bream catching and releasing one after another with litterally a fish a cast and having such a light outfit this was my new best friend this sp fishing is mental.after chopping and changing colours around and finding that the colour pearl watermelon worked best my mate hooks into a stomper this thing is haulin arse, i'm like this has to be the bigget bream i have ever seen by a mile only to find out later it was a schoolie.after marvelling at his catch i had to ask what it was as i'd never seen a juvenile mulloway before so now my new found best friend the sp was capable of even greater things.several cast later more bream were caught and released then it was my turn to have one of these cracking fish give me grief i knew it wasnt a bream straight away as the initial run was so much faster and the drag buzzed 5 times faster then any previous bream run my mate instructed me in how to avoid the structure (the pilons under the train bridge which you cant access now :( ) and within a few minutes i'd snagged my first schoolie B) we caught 4 more that day and several others in different sessions i also landed my pb bream goin 42cm until i discovered S&H i hadn't attempted fishn with sp's again for at least 2-3 years as i had moved to buying a boat and chasing other species that's when i met Rickster and the bloke that renewed my energy to chase a legal mully and several outings later in each others tubs (Rick snaggin at leat 1 each time B) )i had cracked the code to gettn me self a legal that code being fish with the people in the know read there reports and eek out every little bit of info on them as you can cos what you read from one person might not work for another and can be as simple as the size hook your using i have photo's of my first schoolie and some bream but they were taken using the old school film camera which i will try and scan but here's my first legal Rickster helped me catch i kept this one as i'd never eaten one before but if and when i get another it will be photographed and released B)my1stlegal.JPGcheers 4THA

  8. I always rig with 2 snelled circles chasing snapper. Either hook can hook the fish and it is really rare to gut hook (although it does still happen)

about a month ago moggy23, HSVLS19 & myself had one of those sessions that was bananas on the snaps we would have hooked around 30 fish easily, out of all of them we had 3 big ones 90cm + gut hooked and 8 smaller ones gut hooked all using single 6/0 & 8/0 circles, we were surprised to end up with that many knowing how good the lip hook rate is with them  it was a little dissapointing not being able to return more but all have been eaten now atleast B)B) cheers 4THA
  9. hey Rollas hows youre sucess rate on the double snelled circles , just interested as i only ever snelled normal 6/0 gammas but use the circles as a single set up?? have you hooked up on the second snelled circle hook before?? and was it still lip hooked if ya did i thought of snelling a normal j hook to my circle thinking that the circle wouldn't work, the way the hook is set up interested in your response cheers 4THA
