projoe got a reaction from tassieflyer in Reel maintenance tips?
I have over the last 25+ years serviced fishing reels for gotone & worked at Jarvis walker repairing & servicing fishing reels. not a big fan of spraying reels with wd40 rp7 etc the stuff can get into the reel & degrade the grease with its solvents etc(also i dont think the fish like the taste to much if it gets on your hands & then your bait)my advice is to clean the reel down with a clean damp rag take the spool of the reel (now you need to watch out for any loose spacer washers at this point make sure they stay on the shaft) if it has braid on it, run a gentle stream of water from the tap & rinse the braid for at least 2 minutes. while the spool is off the reel wipe the extended main shaft off the old blackened oil with a clean lint free rag put one drop of fishing reel oil on the shaft, take off the handle & put 1 drop of f/r oil into each bearing/bush put handle back on turn reel a few times put a smear of oil on the spool shaft & put spool back on reel (dont cross tread drag knob). next undo the screw holding the line roller on do this carefully & watch how the washers & bearing etc sit note the correct position of the line roller for anti twist reels wipe bearing on cloth wipe washers wipe bail cam & bail arm roller holder clean of any grit & sand salt etc oil bearings washers (smear) reassemble bailarm roller do not over tighten screw. I recommend diawa abu or simular reel oils because they have anticorrosive inhibitors in them. sorry if this is a bit long winded but if you see my reels (rods; I just hose them down well & shammy off) u'd think they were brand new & if down the track you need to sell them to up grade you will get top dollar if there in good nick.

they are bloody idiots (council)those mangroves have proberbly been there for 20 years or more they are very slow growing if anything they would enhance the the river. if you want to do anything about a shrub or tree on council land that is interfering with your property they will not let you touch it, i wonder if they sought any advise before chopping those mangroves down.I wont be informing them of any future sightings of mangroves or the like, this has really pissed me off you try & do the right thing to get protection for this sort of thing & some knobhead with nothing better to do decides to do this!!!!!!!!!!!! :c

projoe got a reaction from breambo25 in Flies for Carp and Redfin
most of my redfin have been caught on a black & red matuka (wetfly) the carp will also take this but my best fly for carp in the back waters on the murray or at goolwa has been a wool bodied concoction. i tie up in red & black wool with bead chain eyes i use a size 6 or 4 hook tarpon pattern hook(the cheap jarvis walker brand are good for these) . bind in the bead chain eyes on just under the eye of the hook, tie in a length of red wool to just past the bend of the hook, at the bend i then tie in black wool wind this back & forth a couple of times to make a body & tie off.fishing this fly for carp in the backwaters you can mostly sight the fish, cast the fly with in a few inches of the carps head give it a couple of twitches they will more often than not swim over & suck in the fly once you feel the take set the hook & hang on! :cheer:

projoe got a reaction from Robo! in beginner fly fisher
g'day roboi have a little bit of experience in this department, if your starting out as i understand i would go to to the five weight line in a weight forward configeration WF5F FLOATING LINES ARE MUCH EASIER FOR A STARTER TO GET ON WITH buy the best you can afford in this area as it can make a big difference to your casting!so brands to consider are rio, scientific angler, or cortland these are USA made lines & generally they cant be beaten for quality, casterability etc. TAPERED LEADERS ARE AS VARIED AS THE FLY LINES AGAIN DONT SCIMP HERE A GOOD LEADER MAKES GOOD PRESENTIONS & TIES BETTER KNOTS! IF FISHING WET FLYS (FLYS THAT SINK) I RECOMMEND FLURO CARBON TAPERED LEADERS IF FISHING FOR TROUT WITH FLOATING FLYS USE A GOOD QUALITLY NYLON LEADER WITH FLOATANT SMEARED ON IT. backing, you could use braid if the reel is lacking in storage but most fly line companys sell backing about 100 metres should suffice.as with most things practice makes better so go to local pond or river tie on a 9' tapered leader & a small fly begin by stripping 30 metres of line of the reel into the water then with the leader & COUPLE OF FEET OF FLY LINE OUT OF THE TIP (left hand holding the fly line) BRING THE THE ROD SMARTLY UP ROD OUT SLIGHTLY AT AN ANGLE TO YOUR BODY TO JUST PAST YOUR EAR THEN MOVE THE ROD QUICKLY TO ABOUT THE 10 O'CLOCK POSITION as IF YOU WERE STANDING IN A BIG ANALOGUE CLOCK AT THAT TIME YOU NEED TO RELEASE A SMALL AMOUNT OF LINE WHILE THE ROD IS STILL FLEXING AS THE FLY ON THE LEADER STARTS TO STRAIGHTEN OUT SMARTLY PULL THE ROD BACK INTO THE BACKCAST WAIT A SPLIT SECOND THEN START YOUR FORWARD CAST AGAIN RELEASING SOME MORE LINE THE FEWER TIMES YOU NEED TO DO THIS TO SHOOT THAT LINE OUT THE BETTER THE CASTER YOU BECOME.HOPE THIS HELPS, ITS A BIT HARD TO EXPLAIN EASIER TO DEMOSTRATE!

projoe got a reaction from rooboy123 in Spray epoxy/resin
use metho to wipe down the rods (maybe 2or3 times).if the finish is discoloured & flakey they have been varnished, some marine varnish could be applied to the affected areas, if it is epoxy & you don't wish to spend a lot on the rods go to cheap as chips & buy the transperant 5 minute epoxy (approx $3).requirements once home with epoxy, one clean icecream lid or simular, 1 ice cream stick paddle type. use stanley knife to make ice stick into a sharp point at one end apply equal amounts of the epoxy to the clean (underside}icecream lid stir the epoxy but try not to make it to bubbly then apply to affected area on binding in clean smooth strokes with the pointed end of i/c stick & rotate rod in your hand to get a smooth finish.hope this helps. cheers. joe.
