  1. Mulloway and sharks, trying to tag as many as I can. A more serious effort on the YFW, might need to include some trips further north. Try to get myself out on a boat and catch a few of these snapper that everyone talks about. Near the end of the summer I'm on a serious SBT mission.
  2. I'd like to report that I haven't caught any damn salmon lately! Pics to follow...
  3. Ah, throwing pencil poppers for stripers at dawn, I miss that. Fishing Wholesalers has one of those new Slammers in the shop. Personally I'll stick with my old Slammers, but I don't regularly give my reels a dunking like the guy in the video.
  4. Spent most of my life in the US and I have always cast spin gear with my right and wound with my left, but as Knackers pointed out, I do the reverse with overhead gear. Guess it doesn't matter much, do whatever works for you. What I don't understand is those who cast and wind with the same hand, having to swap hands after casting, seems quite inefficient. Most modern spin reels the handles are convertible left or right, so change it to whatever you prefer.
  5. Probably a bit difficult to find around here, but a great story, although not about fly fishing specifically.
  6. I have no experience with the magseal reels. I have always filled my spin reels with boat trailer wheel bearing grease, it keeps water and sand from getting in for the most part and it's cheap. As far as Daiwa and Shimano, both companies make reels I like and some I don't like. For smaller spin reels I prefer Shimano's mid-range stuff like the Symetres. Daiwa's medium size star drag overheads like the Sealine X series are brilliant reels, as are the lever drag TLDs from Shimano.
  7. I'm hopefully gonna chase some salmon this weekend, the first time in a few weeks, I'll try to have a decent enough session to warrant a report.
  8. What !!!!.........someone found him and is reselling him ? Knew I should have put a "if found" message Mr Reliable looks like a Kamashark lure that's lost its top coat of paint. Great little lures, I love mine and the price is right, unfortunately they're getting hard to source. Last time I was at FW I bought most of what they had left. The pink/orange one is my favourite.
  9. Thanks for the report Doobie. Those Seabass rods are great, I've got the 9'6" model myself. I passed on the salmon this weekend to have a go at some bream on lures, should have stuck with salmon fishing. Saw on FB that a shark was laying into some seals down at Southport, hope he eats them all. Might be time to break out the big rod as well, anyone know where I can buy seal chunks?
  10. Thanks Alex, I'll let you know how I go, hopefully have some nice photos to share as well. I do have some little grubs, so I'll definitely start off with them. My biggest issue with bream on sp's is patience, it seems they prefer the lure to be moving very slowly and I struggle with that.
  11. Think I might try the Onk this weekend. @Alex, seems like you've got the bream pretty sussed, do you find that tide makes much of a difference chasing them in the Onk? Any other tips you wouldn't mind sharing? I could return the favour by sharing all the fishing techniques I try that don't work, so you know what to avoid.
  12. Great photos in the fog. I need to have another go at chasing bream on lures, not sure I have the patience for it though.
  13. Mine are pvc pipe riveted to star droppers. They're nice and tall so I can get a decent amount of the dropper into the sand, rock solid when a fish strikes.
  14. I was a bit surprised to see the price tag on those reels. I guess the thinking was that the Slammer name stood for their heavy duty reel series. The Spinfisher V incorporated many of the features of the original Slammers and sort of replaced the line. I guess the question is, how much better is the $300 slammer compared with the $100 version and is it worth it?
  15. Nope. Had a go off the beach at Porties yesterday, it was just a bit too rough and stirred up I reckon. I was able to get good distance on my casts into 30 knot wind, but still not far enough. There were several people on the jetty, but couldn't tell if anyone was catching.
  16. Some nice fish snapperhead, would have been great fun on light gear from the yak! Thanks for sharing.
  17. My wife's away for the weekend and I'm on full time kid duty, plus we've got an all day basketball carnival tomorrow. I think the fish will be safe from me until early next week, hopefully the weather holds out till then.
  18. I'm working on extending the butt of a surf rod, want to turn a 9' into an almost 10', but I'm gonna use aluminium tubing over the existing butt, then finish it with shrink tube. I'll post some picks when done.
  19. With school holidays coming I'll be down at Port Elliot for a few days, definitely be hitting up Waits at least one day, probably do some squidding from the Bluff with the kids as well. I'll have to make time to get to some of my local beaches as well chasing salmon, and I might even try a night time West Lakes live bait mulloway session.
  20. I asked about them awhile back before you worked there, they said they'd gotten them when they first came out but hadn't sold well and weren't going to be restocked. Must have been one lost in the back room, you should make use of it.
  21. The lure tube idea is quite popular with surfcasters throwing lures back where I grew up. The tubes can be different sizes to accommodate any size lure, even the big wooden ones we used back there. I have made up similar setups for boat fishing as well and it works great. Here's the bag I've just retired, these guys make the best in the business, mine held a ridiculous amount of lures and tackle without being very big and it was incredibly easy to quickly access anything you needed. When I started using it over here I simply removed the big tubes from the main compartment and used it for t
  22. I got it from Motackle, but a couple other places have it as well. I saw it listed on their website and liked the price, but when I was there about a month ago they didn't have any.
