  1. Good to see you getting stretched by some good bream in my local waters mate.

Apparently there are a few big sized schools of bream cruising the channel, word is they could be spawning early this year.

Have seen some very big sea run bream in the shallows picking food out from among the rocks, problem is, if I can see them, they can see me and are very hard to tempt.

I have seen a pic of a 50cm + bream caught at St Kilda a few weeks ago....

Salmon are proving difficult to catch, recently I got into a few small fish when a school cruised up behind the shop.

    Another great report Alex.

    Thanks everyone!

That's huge! Do you know where the photo is? I'd like to check it out! :P

  2. St Kilda was slow with the salmon trout this morning, no body had caught one or even had a bite! It was super calm, I couldn't believe my eyes!

So I decided to fish closer in for some bream. I spotted a decent school of 30cm+ fish sitting against the rocks so I gave it a cast and was soon hooked onto a good sized bream. Measured at 34cm and was released after a few photos.

The next cast another fish took it on the drop and I hooked up almost instantly! This one put up a better fight and almost got me on a pylon. With frayed 6lb leader, I managed to land the fish and it measured in at 35cm! Another solid bream released after a few more photos.

After that fish, the school was spooked so I walked around a bit searching for another school. I ended up on the pontoon getting a bream a cast for 15 minutes, my brother and sister even got onto them! It was the biggest school of bream I have ever seen, it was almost like a salmon school. Ended up getting 10 fish around 25-28cm.
    All fish released.

  3. Headed to a rock wall with Nathan which I know holds plenty of good bream, reading some of piratepom's recent posts! :) Burleyed up and threw out a chunk on an unweighted size 4 bait holder hook. Almost ever cast the bait was getting smashed by either bream or small st.
After a few smaller fish, I hooked onto a bigger one which went 30cm! Then another at 31cm! A few more legals and then this one jumps on the hook!!!

It went for a screaming first run! As I got it close to the rocks, it decided to dive into tight gaps which frayed the 6lb leader a bit. Luckily I turned it's head and got it up to the surface. Took a few snaps and measured it up, 36cm on the dot. Healthy fish too! Of course, released to fight another day.

  4. Hope you get out for a Xmas fish mate.

I snuck out early this morning for a flick and nailed a 39er, which is a decent Xmas pressie to myself.

On the trusty Z-Man grub again, this time in watermelon red.

And now I have a boat, the search will be on to beat my 42cm PB, just need to do some more recon in the Port system.

Hope you and your family have a great Xmas and a safe and happy new year full of PBs.

Thanks Tinker, Merry christmas to you too.

That's a good sized breambo! Did you hit the Pat?

Good luck beating the 42cm beast ;) You'll get one now that you have a boat, I suggest you should try the Gawler River. Heard of absolute monsters caught from there!

  5. Well done mate! Not too many forms of the sport you haven't had luck with ;) you should try some shrimp patterns sometime! Might persuade a yellowfin or two! Good all rounder for flatties, bream, and pretty much everything we get here! Keep it up mate! ;)

Aha thanks Brankim, I did have a shimp lure but it snapped on the whiplash :( Couldn't find it haha.

  6. Saturday was successful as I fished West Lakes for salmon trout. Managed to land 7 nice sized st's around 30-38cm. Hooked a couple of undersized KGW aswell and on the last cockle, I landed a 38cm bream.  :P

On Sunday, I hit up Garden Island with a few yakers just for a meet and greet session, a yak was lended to me by a mate. We paddled along mangroves, casting pilly chuncks right up against fallen trees. In the first few minutes of fishing, we caught some tiny salmon trout until my rod buckled over and I was onto something decent! It screamed towards the mangroves but luckily I got it out before it could snap me off on 6lb leader. In the net it goes and it ended up to be a 38cm bream! :)

We decided to move spots as it slowed down heaps. Paddling along the mangroves, I spot a promising snag, first cast at it, I get smashed by a big bream! It was an absolute stonker as I saw him rise up but unfortunately it snapped me off under a snag within seconds.
Spewing but they weren't shy to come back out! They were just sitting up against the snag so I tied another hook and casted in the exact same spot. Straight away, another bream took it! After a long fight dodging snags and structure, I get it in the net. This one looked bigger than the others so it had to be a PB.
But of course... It had to be 1cm under 40cm.. At least it's a new PB bream at 39cm. Stokeeedddd!  :D  :D  :D

After that, the fish slowed down so we just had fun catching tiny st. We decided to call it a day around lunch time. It was a great experience.  ^_^

  7. I had a look around the Pat for the first time on Sunday, great new spot for me to try.  A local said that the water at the flood gates is 3.5m deep.  Mulloway would definitely be there, waiting for a softplastic to flutter down...

Nice report, I'll be there next Sunday.

Heaps good MiSCrEANT! Good luck ;)

  8. I will be focusing on the big blue lip breambos that I have seen cruising in there.

Also heard about big mullies occasionally getting through the gates, and a school of salmon cruising around.

The structure in that place is phenomenal, and most of it is within casting distance of the shore.

Only problem I had there is getting distracted by all the cute chicks walking by....My Bad.

Hopefully night sessions on the Pat help me keep my attention on my fishing.

    aha I agree ;)

Harry and I did find this one spot, where we actually couldn't believe our eyes!!! It wasn't in the river system but it was close. THERE WAS A SCHOOL OF 45CM+ BREAM AROUND A SET OF PYLONS, SOME EVEN PUSHING 50CM! At first we thought they were big jumping mullet, but I could recognize the shape and how they moved, they were certainly the biggest bream I've seen. They even sniffed my fly :o

  9. Another top notch report mate.

I see you are getting the hours up in the Pat, have to admit it is a nice place to fish.

Planning another Pat sesh soon, though I am thinking of trying at night, especially a nice warm summer night.

Congrats on getting your first on fly, hope you get many more.

Thanks heaps Tinker, night fishing there would be amazing, I spoke to a bloke who's a local around there, he said he's seen mullies and squid there when the gates are open on warm nights. Out at the Marina, a couple of mates said they saw snook and tommies cruising around at sunset. I might even give it a shot! :D

  10. Harry and I were originally targeting bream, had a few follows and hits. No hookups though, but as I was retrieving the fly over a school of reasonably sized bream under structure, a salmon trout came up from the deep and smashed the fly! It fought so well on the fly gear.  :o It measured in at 23cm, persistence pays ;)

After it was released, we moved off to a new spot, where we spotted a school of big jumping mullet! They were just sitting around the pylons so I decided to cast right in front of them, they didn't react. After a couple more casts, I snagged one on the fly and it went off like a bullet!  I dead lifted it up onto the wharf and it measured in a 34cm. Wasn't as big as I thought but it was defiantly a solid mullet.

    PB290127.jpg

To finish the day, we decided to do some bait fishing for bream, we bought 2 loafs of white bread and fished for 1hr before we left. We landed a few bream from 20cm to 29cm, including a double hookup! After I left, Harry stayed a bit longer, he landed 8 more bream and the 2 biggest being over 34cm. I was spewing! If only I stayed a bit longer. :( Lol

    PB290124.jpg

All together, it was an alright day, we were expecting a few bream on lures and fly but I can't complain with my first fish on fly! :)
