Langley 30
hi all just wondering what ur thoughts are of the import cockles do u like them personally i prefer the goolwa cockles because i like supporting the local industry but there so expensive at the moment
afishyfish 4
Good topic Langley.I tend to avoid buying imported bait if I can because of the potential Bio-security hazard risk that these can present If the budget allows it, I'd much rather buy local Goolwa cockles because it helps support local jobs etc. Langley
Langley 30
yeh i dont like going fishing if the budgets tight anyway because it often forces me to get cheap overseas import stuff where as i would like to keep my money in australia and support the community
Ugly4Life 41
I bought some from a servo not long ago that weren't goolwa cockles. Not sure where they were from but they had a filthy stink to them. They weren't off either, they just smelt really wrong when you opened the shell. The shells were fluted and not smooth like a goolwa pipi.
Langley 30
yeh i think the guy said when i tried em they were from a farm somewhere in the states not too sure tho and theres not a lot of meat on them either

They weren't off either' date=' they just smelt really wrong when you opened the shell. The shells were fluted and not smooth like a goolwa pipi.[/quote']They were Katalesia sp.....mud cockles.I'm not a fan of those chinese imported things (they were calling then Chocolate cockles), and I was horrified when they came onto the market a couple of years back. My biggest concern is they are filter feeders, and heaven knows what sort of organisms/diseases they may be carrying and depositing in to our marine environment. If I cant get Australian cockles I just wont use cockles. snapper15.4kg and Ugly4Life
statesquider 0
I hate the imported ones. They have bugger all meat in the shell and i've found it to be very fragile.. As in you can accidentaly pull the meat of the cockle apart. Total waste of money.Goolwa cockles or squid!

4THALOVE 45
not even a comparison in my opinion same as using that californian squid if it aint fresh and local the fish will let ya know  :vomit: cheers 4THA
statesquider 0
Nothing beats fresh and local! It is a great pity a lot of our cockles go interstate for food :(Bloody top bait! I change to squid if i can't get goolwa cockles. They are just literally not worth using unless you have nothing else...Can always collect your own if they are not loaded with ecoli.... hahaha

Langley 30
Yeh the last thing i want to do is when i run out of cockles and am too lazy to go to goolwa it becomes more expensive for me and all you other guys i pity people who take undersized or over fish marine creatures or anything for that matter they give us fishos a bad name
gonefishing2105 0
imported cockles are a waste of time they tend to be soggy and dnt hold on to the hook real well if u r going to use them u are better of brineing em before u use em
Langley 30
Thtas a good idea gone fishing I still wouldn't use them though due to the things that are in them such as e.coli

I was thinking of maybe bringing a colander or something similar to help try dig them up....!
Langley 30
Hi Ronnie a technique that often works for me is sit in the wash and with the water coming up and down you sink downand they are often seen rolling away and when theyre is one there is usually lots of them
