  1. Thanks doobie, it was one of my better sessions in a river for the season that's for sure, as for my back I see the surgeon tomorrow about my hips & lower back. The L3, L4 & L5 discs are not in the best of condition.. so I'll just have to wait and see what he comes up with.. I do know both hips are supposed to be replaced, the back they were talking about removing the discs & inserting titanium rods in the spine.. I'm now sure I want to go through that at this stage..hopefully there's a better solution..

    cheers

  2. This trip was back on the 7th March 2021, it's to a long stretch of fast/medium flowing water on the upper Mersey River in the Mole Creek area above the Union Bridge. I was told by several trout fishers that there weren't any trout to be seen in the area and that they had wasted their time fishing there. For me that was a challenge, surely there had to be a few trout in this stretch of river. I knew the trout had dropped off after the 2016 record floods and the influx of cormorants didn't help either, there should be some trout back in the area by now. This long stretch of water is wide open which makes the trout easy prey for cormorants, anyway I gave it a go...

  3. Scrub worms were one of my favorites back in my day for fishing in Sth Aust too, used to dig them up near Gumeracha on the Gorge Road, we actually used to call them Hill worms back them, very big worms they were too 8 to 10 inches long...

Worms are great down here early season when the rivers are running high (clear or dirty) & cold, Wattle grubs can be used all throughout the season & grasshoppers/crickets from January to the first or second week of April.

  4. This was a day (19th March 2021) when I was lucky enough to be in the Mersey River when there was a massive Mayfly hatch, the trout were having a great time sipping them off the surface. This was the best hatch I've seen on this river since 2009 when I was lucky enough to see a monster Dun hatch in the stretch of river..(see photo)

The trout fishing was tough going due them feeding on the Mayflys.. Actually seeing what I did was the highlight of the day for sure, the trout I caught were a bonus..

  5. Just came across this weather warning for SA an hour ago.. doesn't look all that good ..

Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds and abnormally high tides for people in Adelaide, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, Kangaroo Island and parts of West Coast and Murraylands districts.
BoM: "A deep low pressure system centred south of the Bight will move eastwards to be near Kangaroo Island on Thursday morning and over western Victoria later in the evening.
Strong to damaging northwest to westerly winds, averaging 50-65 km/h with gusts of 90-100 km/h, are likely to develop about western Eyre Peninsula later this afternoon, extending across the warning area overnight.
Localised damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h may occur about coastal areas and with showers and thunderstorms.
Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Cleve, Goolwa, Maitland, Murray Bridge and Kingscote.
These conditions will cause sea levels to be significantly higher than indicated on tide tables on Thursday. Sea levels along parts of Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent coastlines are likely to be at least half a metre higher than the highest astronomical tide of the year.
At the Outer Harbor tide gauge, the sea level is forecast to reach around 3.5 to 3.8 metres mid to late afternoon on Thursday. This may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas and localised beach erosion.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
    * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
    * Secure or put away loose items around your property.
    * Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water;
    * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe."
How is it looking in your suburb? Send 7NEWS Adelaide your weather videos: m.me/7NEWS Adelaide

    Cheers

Wigston has a website with a similar anti kink keel but are currently out of stock.

    Will keep looking.

Otherwise I will just use ball bearing swivels to reduce the line twist.

Looking at stocking up on some more Mepps spinners and if you could let me know the best place to get them would be much appreciated.

Hey Adrian. Still at same address at One Tree Hill.

Got permission to access some local dams that have been stocked in the past with trout but have never been fished.

Trout in locals dams, very nice & good on'ya... I gather they're rainbows too, very aggressive and they grow big in dams as well.

I used to fish a couple here in Sheffield & Barrington, best rainbow I caught in that was 9 lb.. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun fishing them.. All good Steve, let me know how you get on with the anti-kinks..

    cheers

  8. Thanks doobie, I don't get line twist when using the anti-kink, without them the line does get some minor twisting that eventually worsens the longer I fish without the anti-kinks. I'm interested to see how the small roller bearings will go when I test the new setup without the anti-kink, it would be great if this works. I'm not all that sure about the second anti-kink setup with the roller bearing, even though it's small the added weight may not be the way to go. Only time will tell I suppose..

    cheers

Hey mate where do you get those anti kink keels you rig up with.

Been running 6lb braid to 1.5m of 5lb flourocarbon leader and noticed some line twist when using the spinners.

Not a problem with the little hardbodies but I like your idea of using small snap swivels to save time changing lures.

Yes, very lucky having so many rivers/streams to choose from down here Steve, this little tannin stream is on private property & I'm lucky enough to have around 3-4 kms of it all to myself thanks to a very kind landowner. Blade spinners can create line twist quite easily on most brands of mono lines, some worse than others, even more so with fine line., As you know I use a ultra fine 4 lb Ultra High Tenacity clear mono with a 6 lb leader with the anti-kink and I never have any problems with line twist.. I picked the anti-kinks up from local tackle stores here in Devonport. The ones I have the smallest available (size 12) a made by Wigston & Wilson Tackle.  A friend of mine used braid when spin fishing and had quite a lot of line twist twist, he was told by the supplier that braid was fine for hard body & soft plastics but not suited to use with metal blade spinners. I don't know as I've never used braid at all. This season I'm trying a couple of new ideas with use of a very small #0 roller bearing swivel to see how it goes without a anti-kink. Are you still at the same address at One Tree Hill, if you can't get hold of them let me know and I post a few to you..

    cheers

The new setup I'm going to try when the season opens. The roller bearing is a size #0 & not #00 as I put on the photo.

The small #0 roller ball bearing is also on trial with the anti-kink next season. ..

    Thanks Adrian.

It was a nice keeper and crumbed with Panko tonight for tea :)

Even back in your day :) it would have still been a little dangerous on those rocks - but a Northerly would have helped sooth the soul of no real breakers hitting those rocks.

I'd like to try the rocks on that point, but am not game lol - I have done the far end Parsons rocks/cliff but even then I was still 'concerned' and didn't cast more than a dozen times before I felt enough was enough

Fair enough doobie, if you're not comfortable with fishing from the rocks then don't do it, like I always say, "No fish is worth drowning for ".. I was used to it as I was a regular rock fisher back in my younger days right up until we moved to Tassie. Stick with what you know best mate..👍
