Prior to the refinery being at Port Stanvac the area was known as Curlew Point and consisted of a nice inshore reef. My father used to tell me stories of how when he was a lad, he'd row around the reef with a drift line trailing behind and catch massive sized Kingies. The 3 barges were sunk in the early fifties off Curlew Point. The refinery was built in around 1960 by the Standard Vacuum Company or something similar and was then renamed Port Stanvac being the first 3 letters of the companies nameThe Blocks was made up of a series of pipes and a platform above the water where the ships would offload during rough weather as wahoo mentions. There is also another lot of blocks out off Stanvac about 1 km or so nearby

I have to agree with that... urban sprawl now extends as far as Yankalilla/normanville. Boaties are now flogging the coastline from Cape Jervis to O'Sullies. It doesn't give our local migrating fish like the king george whiting a chance to make the distance to their breeding grounds as they get picked off along the entire coastlineMaybe this is why we've seen a major decline in numbers along the coast... THIS IS ANOTHER ISSUE THAT PIRSA NEED TO ADDRESS!

AFF, if a further reduction in the kgw bag limit is required then we seriously need to support it as long as a quota was implemented towards the Pros. You have to remember our local snapper stocks only increased to a healthy position up to two years ago by us reccos having a bag limit reduction but then unfortunately this made way for a "killing spree" by some Pro fishos

Wouldn't you say that the fuel station platform would've been in the middle of the concrete blocks as wahoo is suggesting about the fixings/mooringsThere definitely was a platform structure there as I used to go past there and wish you could fish it

Umm! It is pipes on the bottom that are secured by "blocks"

Jaffa, I've been saying from personal experience for the past two to three years that not as many good sized snapper in the huge schools have been exiting and entering the Gulf. First off a couple of years ago it was business as usual locating the big schools of snapper as they entered the Gulf... it was different in the last half of the season as the fish were definitely in limited stocks as they exited. It would be about two and a half years ago that I first started posting on Strikehook that the numbers were down in that last part of the season

Hi AleRegarding the onloading and offloading from tankers. Due to the difficulty in close manouvering of such a large vessel which would be hard to control in close proximity to a shallow coastline, especially with any windage, tankers moor up to what is known as a SBM or Single Bouy Mooring. These bouys have a pipeline from the refinery to the bouy which then connects to the tanker for loading. They are used a lot in the offshore oil industry where there is no alternative loading facility. The following link tellr you more in depth  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_buoy_mooring Saw a lot back in my offshore days. There used to be a dive team at the refinery which maintained the whole infrastructure.CheersWahoo

[quote name="afishyfish" post=199111Maybe it's simply that the KG'sm numbers are down' date=' allowing a more than usual number of Juvenile Snapper to invade their groundsThese "excess" fish might normally succumb to natures other poulation controllers, such as starvation/ predation etc [/quote] I think it is the other way around AFF... the piranha's are denuding the bottom everywhere of feed that was otherwise there for KGW and the KGW have been keeping on moving instead of stopping and feeding over their normal haunts.. Last year a lot of KG schools were moving along the Metro coast in as much as 2 metres of water

Yeah.that's interesting Ranger, because there IS a 'fish haven' marked on the charts right next to the reef. I've often thought that chart is out, cause it would make sense that little rectangle 'fish haven' ought to be around the reef. @ FISHIE, my old man and his mate did VERY VERY well around the tyres in October 2011. GUESS who rocked up on day two of that snapper blitz ????? The pros ensured it was a Massacre not much of them first schools would've made it much further north I don't reckon. Oh, but now the pros are have returned to get em on their way back out great news for the fish
