  1. hopefully a road trip to coffin bay in a couple months shall see both these rods loaded up..
  2. picked up a couple new rods from an old fella dying of cancer. he also chucked in a "small" box of hooks which contained about 1000-1500 hooks from size 6 up to 8/0 but mostly in 3/0 40/5/0 sizes and 4 big halco twister salmon lures.. for an exrtra few bucks..the golden red one ill keep, but gave softy the Black one as his first Alvey rod. now to get him an alvey and into something to make that ratchet SCREAM!!!Rods are hand built on Wilson 4120 blanks, 4 wrap, means nice and light with a fair bit of whip, 120 means inches long. with reel seats and spikes both rods sit in the 11'* bracket
  3. just bad luck from the sounds of it... my one that got away..Coffin bay king fish on 8lb line. fishing for garfish with a pencil float when i hooked up to a nice gardy... while winding it in a school of big kings came through.. Garfish on my line was going mental as they do.. kingy just swallowed him.. and i got spooled while laughing my arse off looking at my lil shimano solstice 1000 go backwards faster than it had ever before..
  4. ahem yeah... id have jumped right in.... ahem... AFTER taking a few photos.. probably would of thrown jimmy in to save him... what else are mates for??
  5. he had to hand the rod to Jimmy.. as i was not gonna miss the opertunity to snap those pics. hahhahahahAFFAll I see is an arm holding a rodSure you're not "The lady Of The lake " holding aloft Excalibur"it was actually holding his EXCELLOR aloft '_
  6. braid on all my small spin reels, mono on my large spin reels and mono on my alveys..
  7. most rod tips/top eyes are just heat shrinked on.. so get a lighter.. and gentley warm it up and pull it off.. then stick new one on.. heat it up.. and done...OH rods as with all rods have a back bone that flexes dominantly. you may run the risk of breaking the rod using it " upside down"
  8. UHF im a big fan of Red heads.. but that brunettes caught my eye...
  9. you could say i like them... but ive also been very very lucky.. my step father " lent me a 14' rod and the 650c 3/7 when i was about 12..(20yrs ago) ive been fishing it since. the rod needs a full rub down and re varnish. but considering this set up was his for a long time before he lent it to me. and still going strong.i bought the 650 C 1/6 and 651 C 5/7 from Brenton, and.. scored another 14' rod last year. have caught rays snapper and small sharks. my Brother in law gave me the 650 BC last year for christmas which i then caught a 5' shark on the next day.and the 650 A was given
  10. Brenton, Rock Nev are also Alvey fishers might be able to shed some light as well.id say a 70's combo. worth having a fish with.. ever cast an alvey??? i set softy up on a decent eagle ray at my shack using my alvey and 14' rod.. nothing like seeing a full grown adult just laying back full weight on the rod/reel with nothing but the heels of his feet on the ground. rod at full bend and reel holding strong. addiction... began growing that day.
  11. 650 A 5/7650 C 1/6650 C 3/7 651 C 5/7 and the new one ive recently been using.650 BC ( beach caster )
  12. nfi on age at this stage. but with the enlarged casting loop above the reel id say the 70s. it would be worth more to a collector than a fisherman.. but yes.. they are a tough reel with 1:1 ratios they are affectionately known as the hand winches of the fishing world not all that rare, as many of our grand fathers have them hanging around. they are still producing 650C's to this day.. but that is probably the first model hence the #1. gonna go check out my... 4-5 of them... and check my models
  13. found an Oliver rod on Ebay,http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Oliver-Coral-King-Fishing-Rod-/170650771030?pt=AU_Vintage_Fishing&hash=item27bb941e56what size is the rod??
  14. back plate of the Alvey should have a make/model number/size the most popular are the 650 C or 651C deep spool. these are what Rock Nev and i use a lot for snapper. ive also hooked up some pretty decent rays and even landed 5' sharks.
  15. photo of the Alvey up the other side ?? star drag?twin handle or single?looks about a 650 size, but a B or a C will depend on clutch/drag assembly
  16. i take tours across the Nullarbor for a living. we use Telstra. as its the only carrier that works in regional townships. but even then from ceduna-Norseman there is only really coverage at Eucla/Border Villiage. we also carry satalite phones to cover these black spots. as mentioned Telstra for the coverage.. but the price comes with the service. best coverage worse customer service/price.

    Pliers:

why "for observation in half-strength seawater " why not full salt water.. cant compare this to our normal fishing in salt water.. but i guess can compare it to our fresh water fishing..
