KhombiI just do a little reading here and there, sir. As do quite a few other forum members, may I add. RJInitially it was a little inspiring, but the matter-specific marriage of convenience did have a bit of an NQR feeling for me...A lesson learnt - all well and good for fishos to be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with greenies (on the steps of any given parliament house in the land) regarding the Abel Margiris, but that is where it ends. They are not and never will be our "friends" - just check out The Wilderness Society`s "Information Kit" pertaining to the SA Marine Parks Draft Management Plans on their website, eek!BTW - the "Margiris legislation" originated as a private members bill, drafted by one Melissa Parke who is a Fed WA Labor MP [but really would belong more in the Greens Party]...from wiki"Over the years Parke’s community activities have included acting as a Western Australian representative on the National Council of the Australian Conservation Foundation, as the spokesperson for the Communities for Coastal Conservation..."From her website [spew bucket alert!]http://www.melissaparke.com.au/speeches/484-environment-protection-and-biodiversity-conservation-amendment-declared-fishing-activities-bill-2012.htmlTowards the endI have no doubt that it was a great relief to hundreds of thousands of concerned Australians to hear yesterday that the government will create the additional powers under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to allow the minister for the environment to stop the supertrawler operating for up to two years while the environmental, social and economic impacts are assessed by an expert panel.Simplistically, the opposition and a few people in the Lower House didn`t like the "social and economic" bit...and a few other "fine print" details, by the sound of it. Not aware of the finer points. Close call.Just as an aside, note this gem shortly thereafterAmong those who will be celebrating this outcome are the students of Fremantle primary school who last week, on a blustery morning at South Beach Cafe, presented the Prime Minister with a card that said, 'Thank you for introducing the world's largest network of marine sanctuaries.' "Get `em young", as they say... :vomit:

And he's right as well. One of the more important aspects of the Magiris saga was that the Greens tried to retain the part of the legislation that would have allowed the Minister to block any aspect of rec fishing any time he chose. That wasn't very clear to me, but it is now.So after teaming up with rec fishers in protests all over the country, the Greens then tried to make sure that the environment Minister would have the power to shut us down for 2 years whenever he liked, and for whatever reason he liked. Considering that 'valid' reasons include the Precautionary Principle (as has been applied to the Magiris), this would have been a disaster if someone ever had an agenda to stop any particular aspect of rec fishing.Good job the Greens move wasn't supported, and a warning about getting too close to them even if we all seem to be on the same side. Sorry about repeating this information. I guess that most already understood what really happened here, but I certainly didn't.Cheers,RJ

afishyfish reacted to RJ5023 in "SAVE PORT STANVAC JETTY"- ACTION!!!
Rotare,You've raised some very good points.During the MPA debate, there was talk of providing some form of compensation to rec fishers via artificial reefs, breakwater capping etc, but that seems to have gone pretty quiet.Considering the loss of landbased access throughout the Port River system and Outer Harbour over the past decades, and the fact that the blueline has retreated far from most of the Metro waters during that same period due to the death of huge areas of seagrass - with the obvious impact to jetty and shore based rec fishing - a case could probably be made that the Port Stanvac jetty be retained and used to offset some of these negative effects on metro rec fishing. These problems were not created by rec fishing, but through the Govt's own policies over many years. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity for rec fishers to ask for some form of compensation.I've got no clue about the financial situation re Mobil/Govt/Local councils, but itch to see if we can't get more support for rec fishing in SA from our Govt.Perhaps this idea would cause the environment around the wharf to be heavily fished, but maybe there's an answer to that along the lines of the Pt Noarlunga jetty where fishing could be prohibited at the seaward end (ntz) and reserved for the use of divers and eco related activities. Can the Govt (taxpayers) afford it? I don't know.2 cents.Cheers,RJ

So what...do we not have the right to legislate against foreign interests in our own lands and waters? What does this mean Gerry? You should have the right to plunder our oceans in secret?Well how's this Gerry!Since the preparations for this venture started seven years ago jack mackeral populations in the southern hemisphere have plummeted 63% because of these trawlers. No wonder you prefer the science from 10 years ago?Hows that for honesty Gerry.... Why should good governments been persecuted by EU scum for wanting to protect their own peoples interests for sustainability?http://www.naroomanewsonline.com.au/story/334802/netherlands-raises-trawler-ban-with-eu/?cs=7http://www.smh.com.au/environment/bigger-fish-to-fry-in-trawler-ban-20120914-25xms.htmlThese EU proponents remind me of that 007 movie "The World Is Not Enough".Does anyone else think this issue is the thin of the wedge for what is left of our national soveriegnty?TB

Looks like the next :c fight will start now with the owners lawyers trying to sue the Federal Gov for losses incurred ?Assuming they can find no way of justifying keeping the ship here, yiu have to wonder where it will go next. It's never over 'til the fat lady sings hey !
Not quite what I was getting at TB, but neverthe-less, applicable and relevant also .It seems there's a fair bit of foreign owned ships being registered in other countries going on to maybe exploit legal loopholes ?The commentary had me thinking about the Piracy off the Somalian coast b4 it was even really mentioned, and guess what !?http://www.guardian.co.uk/global-development/poverty-matters/2012/apr/03/overfishing-foreigners-senegal-fishermen-piracy?intcmp=239

Thanks TB and Del.My comments on the "selective Journalism" point was from a very sceptical angle.Obviously theyre not going to show the real numbers if they can help it  From a Commercial point of view, I can understand their wanting to keep going, but with the growing tide of people looking at sustainability issues, ships like that just dont belong in a modern world, imo anyway

lets not be fooled by this lattest development regards the banning of the Margaris fishing our waters,i am suspicious that this goverment is playing games at the moment to try to calm the situation down and gain a bit more breathing space as one might say, after all this is politics at its best right now, you can almost see them number crunching before the campaining begins prior to the elections. The federal goverment right now is starting to shit its pants because it did not expect the backlash that it got and right now it will say anything it can to try and get out of this mess its in,they cannot aford to lose anymore votes and if they allow this ship to fish our waters they are going to lose more than they expected. Lets face it this ship would not have come here without some sort of assuranse from the goverment to be allowed to fish and im damn sure she is not going to give up without some sort fight and go home with empty holds. I DONT THINK SO. Round one is over round two is about to begin.

from my understanding a full grown 350kg bull sealion can swim to depths of 100 odd meters and maintain his fishing for up to about 12 minutes. the females are around 8minutes. Sealions often hunt between 80-120km offshore. hunting for 4 days and then returning to shore for 4 days rest. since the Ship cannot hunt in Sealion Feeding/hunting areas and the population of 13,000 ( yes almost extinct) stretches from Geraldton WA to Victor Harbor SA. this ship should there for be banned from WA to SA with in 120km of shore..

Thanks Jack. Regarding matching pilchards: I've tried tying surf candies that size but I found the fly ridiculously heavy to cast. So I resorted to a conventional Leftys Deceiver, 7" long, with only just enough epoxy to hold the jumbo eyes. These flies have the problem that their tails will wrap around the bend of the hook, which is a problem that the Candy solves nicely. To be honest, I'd be happy to stick with whitebait-sized Candies since the salmon love them, but I was chasing larger pelagics when I tied the flies in the pics.

I would have to say that to remove 18000 tons of redbait fish in one hit would have to affect the rebreeding cycle of this species unlike taking some now and some a bit later on. At some given point of time, after being heavily fished they would not be able rebreed in sustainable numbers.

Yeah those cats aren't all that powerful hey Ale  and 4 of them too ! I sem to recall that thyere being built in Tassie This is possibly the Jamie u heard of http://www.jamiesdaintreefishing.com/Those bridges certainly do have fish under them and one has a HUGE salty that lives under and near it too  I fished the area at dusk from the top of a very high, very steep bank to be on the safe side. Managed to snare an abandoned, snagged up Crab Pot, baited it up and got a couple of mudddies too The rivers closest to Cairns airport looked pretty good, and I know of 1 beach-side resort where they have a small creek running past with bridges over it, and you can watch the jacks under the bridge from about 1 metre away.Kicking myself for not having a crack at those :S On the plus side of seafood, we found almost any prawn dish up there to be superb :clap:Some pics from our trip Our accomadation in Cairns, with a great Balinese RestarauntThis guy behind me was a bit of a nutterMuddy for lunch Croc Central Sign in the Karrunda Hotel, if u can read it lolOne of the pretty speccy waterfalls on the way up the karoonda railway before ctaching the sky Gondolas back. Wouldnt mind getting in that pool at the bottom left for a :woohoo: Will try and get some pics of that up tooApparently it cost somewhere around 20 Mill to install. Some of the reef as we left Cairns on the way home

Thanx guys, now that I’ve been and re read the posts from prior to my trip, I can relate to it all so much more!! The whole coats line is oarsome with so much potential.I reckon between PD and Wonga beach I crossed at least 3 bridges that could’ve had fish under them, not to mention many more between PD and Cairns! If Id been able to take all the advice and got hold of some livies and spent the time I could’ve snared a few of the Jacks I seen in the shops. I also got told of a “Jamie” who fishes out from the Daintree inlet and smashes the fish in the area. Doesn’t advertise, but he number is googlable and would be worth a call. And yes the Cat was impressive, not to mention just in PD they have 3 off them, very similar in size, all run very well by “Quicksilver”. Build plate pic:Yep, thats 1440kw per motor!! It has 4 off themI didn’t have enough time to do heaps of fishing,( or the sky rail in Cairns AFF) but still got my fix and the family has come back in great spirit’s after such a great trip away, another one ticked off. I reckon the upper west coast is next, especially after chatting with the sandgroper on board......

Great read, report and story all in one there Ale ! Definteley a few cracker boats there for sure. In fact I recognise the one in the last shot with the round windows.Only thing missing is the dancing girls serving drinks The one that impressed me most was where you could actually dock the smaller baot inside the stern of the mother boat, not just on the rear deck. Those Big Cats are pretty impressive beasts of things too. While out on one of the pontoons at the reef I got a good undertwater view of one of the Cats thrust chutes at the rear, and from memory it was probably around 1.5 X 1.5m, so you can imagine the amount of water the things would shift !Had a crew member telling me they cost something around 50G just to get each engine serviced :pinch: Makes our outboards seem cheap hey ! Did you happen to do the Karrundah Train/ Skyrail trip ?Definiteley worth it I thought

Watch out if landbased fishing, there are crocs and they will come up without you even seeing them. Just because its a big sandy beach does not mean they are not there.. If you can get some live bait then rig a 30lb - 50lb leader with a 7/0 circle and send it out. If you see a guy throwing a cast net around tell him you will give him $5 for a dozen herring. (You will need a bucket to keep them alive unless you fish next to the guy)Send out one line with a live bait and cast lures with the other to keep you busy.I would use 30lb braid on most of my mid range gear.Estuary fishing can be a bit hit and miss. See if you can get a Sunrise or sunset session instead of a 9 - 5 day. Most of them will do it. And if they are not using live bait then they are not a good operator who wants to put you onto fish.Cheers
