I enjoy fishing for gar. It is often a challenge of balancing a finesse presentation with just the right amount of burley and right size bait and hook and size of float. Landbased its even more tricky as you need to factor in casting weight to get your rig out a good distance while still showing bites and not tangling.
Often I go down to 4lb line and a tiny short shank hook to get the bite.
I also like using alternative baits and have had some great success on stuff no one else uses.
Silver fish is very popular as a gar bait in Vic and occasionally sold here in tackle stores. Most fish flesh works well and I like using tuna offcuts, pilchards and carp.
Tiny livebaits are deadly and almost always work even if the gar won't touch live maggots. Single small seaweed worm and tiny shrimp are my favourite.

Follow up on Gliss. I've still got it on 1 reel. Abrasion resistance got really bad over time to the point of constant breakages.
It looks like most people have found the same and it is going really cheap.

At $3 a spool I am still giving it a miss.

Good work Larry
I have also used squid, scottish kippers and chicken pellets for the yabbies with good success. Carp is also very popular as yabby bait here as you can often catch them onsite.

As long as you only use 3 hooks

Seems to be a smaller version of a kontiki. Looks to be ore portable and light enough to deploy on a rod and reel. I saw the ad on late night TV here.
Might be abit of fun for salmon and mulloway. There's a few for sale on gumtree

Welcome
Nice clear video and simple to understand language. Good work

I've got a few small ones on gulp sandworms while chasing bream in westlakes.

I had a small bottle of tuna oil in a fishing backpack once. It spilled.
I couldn't get the oil out even after a few washes in the washing machine. Had to throw it out in the end.

You'll be happy with the baitrunner

If you are using a glass rod and 20lb braid then for $200, get a Daiwa BG 4000

As long as the rod has no trigger grip it will be fine for boat fishing.
Heaps of reels in the price range. What do you fish for and what line strength do you use? braid or mono?
I like Shimano for midrange and Daiwa for high end threadlines. Penn are also very nice in the mid price range but heavy. I've picked up a Penn Slammer 3 recently at a good price as they are discounting to make way for version 4.

Hard work fishing land based. The first km or two of shoreline is really shallow and weedy. From the yak I go to a long thin 3inch soft plastic and slow drift with the lure just above bottom.
Another option is to use a shallow diving hardbody minnow and fish over the top of the weeds. This only works when the fish move in shallow when the water warms more.

From a boat casting is not as important. I value lightness so you can hold it all day, a soft tip so it will show bites but enough backbone to handle any bigger fish. I use a few high end rods for specific uses but mostly prefer mid range gear these days. I really like the gomoku rods for boat fishing for whiting as they tick all of these boxes.
For landbased bait fishing for whiting it is a balance between length for casting distance and lightness. I use a pair of Daiwa seajiggers for most of my jetty work.
For extreme distance I have pair of SFC Surf Tiger rods and a pair of Century TTUL ST. Matched to a pair of Daiwa Surf Basia reels these will cast over 100m easily.
For lure fishing I am lucky enough to own a Black Diamond Flats Ranger 1 to 3kg rod that works great for small hardbodies and plastics. Although I mainly use it for baitfishing from the Yak.

Bait or lure?
Boat or landbased?
Threadline or baitcaster?
What are you using at the moment?

Breadcrumbs, chicken pellets and tuna oil.
I buy my chicken pellets by the sackful.
The family prefer crumbed and fried fish so after a while the burley recipe becomes chicken pellets, oil left over from frying fish and breadcrumbs left over from crumbing fish

For the rod and reel, 65lb braid is overkill. If you are going for salmon, 20lb will be fine and 15lb braid will cast even better.

If they are not biting, I also like to dip the baits in tuna oil or halco catch scent
