  1. As AFF said: Great Post Grazz. I watched the 4 corners report as well and one thing that stood out to myself and the wife was that neither Gerry Geen, Dirk Van der Plas nor Colin Buxton were able to look straight at the camera or the interviewer. To us that meant, shifty as all hell!! Something nobody in the media seems to have latched onto is: If this thing can process 4,500 tonnes per day and has a catch limit of 18,000 tonnes it can fill its quota in 5 days, even if they did manage to double the quota to 36,000 tonnes it will still be finished in 8 days. It can fish in some pretty heavy sea
  2. @ Red Bull. Have heard "stories" of divers accidentally cutting themselves underwater, and not realising it.........the colder water numbs the pain of the cut,and the blood not seen until .........not sure how much BS is involved with those stories though I guess it's a "logical scenario" though.........better call "MythBusters" Not wanting to hijack the thread. If you cut yourself underwater it often looks green. Having done most of my diving in the UK in cold water I can attest to the fact that you can lacerate your hand and not notice it until you surface. Especially in the winter, deep w
  3. That's because the wavelength of the colour red is the longest colour wavelength and is absorbed by water first. Red nearly disappears by 5msw depth. That's why when diving you don't see those lovely vibrant colours you get on the TV unless you have an artificial light source.
  4. Lee Raynor uses one to troll diving minnows for Snapper in Port Philip Bay. Pretty successful too!
  5. It's quite a common phenomenon. Used to create havoc when we were trying to sneak up on a boat underwater in the dark, bloody great greeny blue trail underwater. Not good for the "you can't see me" brigade
  6. @AFF I know of 1 dead cat, one milk bottle and a pair of reading glasses in their case.Know what you mean AFF. I work with a few ED nurses, it's not just the bizarre things retrieved from there, it's the wild stories that accompany them!
  7. @ Khombi: By the way Kon where do you get all your imfo from,He's the consumate research machine with a quirky sense of humour!!
  8. Been using single dropper paternosters since I got a size 4 longshank firmly embedded in the ball of my thumb courtesy of a vigorous 40+cm KGW. So it's a twisted dropper single paternoster for me with size 4 circles. I tie all mine and the fair ones rigs. Apart from sabiki style flasher rigs I don't think I've ever purhased a pre tied rig for anything. When I'm having a quiet late afternoon I'll sit and tie traces and rigs while imbibing a few cold amber fluids!
  9. Picked a few up at Corny Point diving shore based around the Lighthouse many moons ago, also got some good size Abs. Be careful of the swell though.
  10. Hi TB. Are you talking internal or external. There are no pipelines as such. Inlet & outlet are 2.8m diameter concrete lined tunnels it's only where the inlet & outlet go down through the seabed to join the tunnel that there is a need for anti-fouling, which I suspect would be less than is used on the average container vessel's hull.Wahoo
  11. Hi Ranger. Very fair call indeed. From the projections shown Nitrogen & sediment levels from Penrice & Waste Water Treatment have been heading downwards for a number of years and should achieve their very low targets within a few years. The only major polluter that isn't improving is stormwater runoff & RJ has given an excellent answer to that one. Apparently though, just buiding wetlands is not the answer as fine sediment still goes into the gulf, councils need to be harvesting the water in wetlands and using it for irrigation. Playford & Salisbury councils are apparently the
  12. OK. Shoot me if I get this wrong as I'm going from memory of Wednesday night & have left the handouts with the facts on them at home! The 2 culprits are Nitrogen and fine sediment. Penrice ONCE had the largest Nitrogen discharge as well as one of the highest sediment discharges. They have significantly cleaned up their act and are on their way to being the lowest producer of Nitrogen and are working toward significantly removing the fine sediment. Same Same the waste water treatment plants leaving stormater runoff as the major significant problem as it's managed by so many different bodies
  13. Hi Kingsley. Peter did mention that one of the best ways to reduce the Nitrogen was to re-use the treated water for horticulture. It's happening a lot already, if you lived up north you'd have seen nothing but lilac coloured pipes for the last few years as they supply Virginia and surrounding districts. Trouble is it's an expensive infrastructure to install. Same with Stormwater, it's all very well creating wetlands but the fine sediment still ends up at sea, better to harvest the water from the wetlands for use elsewhere.Crispy. The Desal intake is betwen 800m and 1 km long, the discharge is
  14. The devil may be in the detail. Wait 'til PIRSA release the full report. It's difficult to see from the press release but Chief, you may be OK if it's one possession limit per fisher, provided you all fish of course!
  15. My favouite Squid jig is the one that's working on the day & I've had success on all manner of jigs over the years, colours from transparent to dark (deep!!) purple and all sizes, even brought some really tiny things with one set of pins in Palau a few years ago & they work on their day.On the boat I tend to have a Tommy on a Squid Witch on the handline & cast & retrieve a jig. Leave the jig rod in a holder when eating lunch, the bouncing up & down often brings in a few more & interrupts my feeding time.

Certainly not. Personally I haven't fished freshwater for over a decade & even though I was once English I don't have a love affair with CarpWahoo
  17. Seems it's not a done deal yet and Greenpeace also seem to be getting involved.http://www.fishingworld.com.au/news/mounting-opposition-to-super-trawler-visit Wahoo
  18. Looks as if I'll have to start buying yet another fishing Mag. It also looks as though it's a vehicle for these contributors since the other 2, Modern Fishing in particular, changed direction. I was wondering what happened to Starlo et al!
  19. @ Archerfish: Mind you, it's still a long way off the "official" Australian record of 18.4kg (supposedly caught at Port Adelaide, according to some reports)Caught at the Coral Patch off Outer Harbour in the middle of the day on a mackerel fillet in early November (pre closures, it was Grand Prix week)on my brother in law's 5m quintrex centre console. I gaffed it we weighed it & went straight in to get it weighed on certified scales. Wouldn't keep another one that size.Wahoo
  20. As Trihull Fisher said. I don't spray with WD40, just wipe down with a cloth that has WD40 on it. I've got some reels over 30years old that get a light wash down, rub over with WD40 when dry & a comprehensive strip down grease & oil annually. Still good as new.
  21. If you're going to spray, tighten the drag right up to stop water ingress, then a light sprinkle, not full pressure, just enough to wash the salt off. When dry I wipe down with WD40 or similar if they're going to be stored for any length of time. If you're getting corrosion then as 4THA said, toothbrush & mild detergent, if that doesn't get it try a strip down to get at the fiddly bits.
  22. Locked Half BloodDropper LoopBimini TwistImproved AlbrightPerfection Loop@Plankton. I tie the bimini with the rod in a holder to provide tension where at all possible as it makes life easier. I also finish with a series of half hitches around each leg & then the double as I find it much easier than the traditional pull through. Then attach leader with improved albright.
  23. Been reading SA Angler since I arrived in this fair state in 1985. Now read both, couldn't say one is better than the other as to me they fill different niches/needs.
  24. & teaching them that Tuna in pens = free feed doesn't alter their behaviour 1 little bit does it. Tuna divers are always repairing predator nets after damage from White Pointers and the cute cuddly NZ Fur Seal!
  25. I saw that as well Kon, How does cutting it back to 2 operators restrict the change in behaviour? If they all operate in the same general area then surely they all attract the same general population. I notice they didn't quote the research, just said it's a DENR decision. Love to see the paper to be able to give an informed opinion, or is it just DENR being against it so we'll test the waters, so to speak?
