  1. It stands for Australian Surfcasting Federation www.australiansurfcastingfederation.org There is lots of information on the forum about all things surfcasting/distance casting/tournament casting. There are also regular practice sessions where we catch up, have a cast and chat.
  2. The splashdown sinkers won't accept larger hooks, I believe a 5/0 Gamakatsu is about the biggest they will take. That is the smallest hook I'll use chasing mulloway and sharks off the beach, usually it's more like a an 8/0. They also look like there's too much going on with them, too many moving parts, on the beach I like to keep things simple. Both the IMPs and the Gemini clips will not usually release accidentally when using an overhead thump cast or a pendulum if you keep things smooth. I usually use an OTG cast which makes things a bit trickier as everything is laid out on the sand, bu
  3. I prefer the splashdown sinkers, They have a nice positive locking mechanism that is less prone to accidental releasing. They also have grip wires with adjustable tension so you can fine tune them to release when you want them to. A couple of tackle stores around Adelaide are stocking them now. http://www.australiansurfcastingfederation.org/AsfForum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2487&sid=fc6fb5d741738288e27ca57019c7a60d
  4. We had one to play around with at an ASF practice session. While it worked as advertised and could be a thing for novices who cant get the release working at all, there were considerable drawbacks. Some of which included having to cast with the same power each time, so if you want to cast a heavier weight or drop one in close you need to readjust it. The other big drawback for us distance casters is that you can't use any of the distance casting techniques. Even for just a "normal" cast on lighter gear i had to tighten it up as tight as I could and it could have still gone more. We checked
  5. Hi guys, I'm just wondering what size hooks you guys use when chasing carp? Also, what bait do you use and how do you present it on the hook? A couple of photos would be very handy. Thanks guys
  6. I was running 3lb on one of my bream outfits for a while. It was ok when there were no snags around but you really lack the ability to work fish around structure. Then there is the lack of feel, if you're working the flats or open areas with hard bodies its ok. I didn't like it when using soft plastics or bouncing a hard body around structure.
  7. The owner ones are good but they are chrome. The spring steel they use is much better than the decoy ones. If you want the clips in black, Smith do them and they are almost identical to the owner ones. I used to get my 00 size ones from got one on magill rd. Best clips I've used.
  8. Buy a big F-OFF gun. That place is rough and I don't mean the fishing
  9. I just roll mine in the sand, it's abrasive enough to take all the slime etc. off in no time.
  10. If you load the sol with some 6-10lb you could have some fun with the snapper! You may feel like you're gonna break something but the sols are up to it!
  11. ^^^^ That's what I've got on my Luvius, very comfortable. I personally stayed away from the cork, firm eva feels nicer and will wear better. It's all up to personal choice in the end.

I think the 00's that i use are rated at 19lb. Don't quote me on that, my memory is dodgey. But they are much stronger than I first expected.
  13. Plenty of rays in the port, you see a few when chasing bream on the flats.
  14. I've kept an eye out in different kitchen stores for the "Tech Edge" but haven't seen it, has anyone found it stocked anywhere?
  15. I think I've got an ugly stick gold in the shed, 12ft, will have to check tho. I may be perswaded to sell it, I really don't like it all that much and it's just been replaced.
  16. Hava a look at the Stix range, there may be something there you like. It may be hard to find somethining that casts further at the lighter class as most rods at 2-5kg will bottom out casting say 20g slices for salmon. Just have a look at the lure weight on the rod and make sure it's suitable. Idearly you want to pick a rod to suit what you are casting and I think you will struggle to find something that will cast 1g and 30g well. If your surf fishing using plastics it's a different story as the weights are much lighter but generally most people fish 40g+.My personal opinion, buy 2 rods, one th
  17. Around the port turtlebacks in pumpkin seed and watermelon do very well. You will probably want to loose 30mm from the front to improve hookup. Use a 1/24 or 1/16 #2 jighead, a little heavier if it's not getting down.

Have a look at the Owner or Smith ones next time you're in a tackle shop. The spring metal they use in them is much better than the decoy ones IMHO. they are softer and more springy pluss the shape makes them a little less tricky. I've been using them for 3 or more years and have never had one open on me
  19. I couldn't justify buying it and using it, but to put it on a shelf to look at and possibly rise in value, if i had the spare cash, maybe.
  20. I think Hornes make super heavy duty ones for trawlers and the like. I saw some when I was in their shop last. I'm guessing the cost would stop the rec fishers from buying them. They were a much heavier material.
  21. It won't cut in unless your roller stops rolling
  22. How "slight" is the wobble, It's not an F1 engine. There is a certain amount of play in the unit. It won't be a bent shalt, the shaft doesn't spin, just moves up and down. My guess is it's just a little play where the spool mounts on the shaft or between the drag washers.
  23. If you go for the best Daiwa reel you can afford you'll be pretty much getting the best you can for your money IMHO. Have a look, have a play around, see what you like.

    my new sol

I'd say go for Nitlon or Sensor braid in your chosen rating. White Sensor is my preferred choice but that's just for visability. Nitlon is much more reasonably priced but still a great line. With either of these lines fill the spool to about 2-3mm from the lip. The suppleness of the line allows it to come of the spool very easily so filling it right to the rim is not needed, and can cause wind knot problems.
  25. My favoite combo at the moment is a Daiwa Saltist LRFG, and a Luvius 1003 with 3lb fluro
