    "I know as I type this, others elsewhere will be saying how SH admin are zealots, and in PIRSA’s pockets etc, but the reality is far from that"Not me ale...."In this case, a scientist has asked ( thru the right avenues) if there is any chance members of the forum could help him with any info on a rare skate, nothing more.If he has worked alongside other groups, so be it, SH , is just another group ."No problem with the scientists or their case as its not them that would use feedback against us. I think the metro sharking issue upset enough members of this forum to justify exercising extreme caution with anything fgsv or WACRA are taking an interest in."The same tit for tat arguement your pushing could be used in regards to your constant "hard" questions aimed at PIRSA."Sometimes on behalf of others not confident or prepared to ask them themselves. So why shoot the messenger? Plenty of others who post on here are less diplomatic than myself."Hardly a target species for the average rec and has no commercial value!!"Agreed but unfortunately the status of this species gives rise to their agenda, it doesn't diminish it when advocating banning fishing in the port river.You raise ya hat to Kon but don't like my concerns on the issue. Fair enough I can cop that.

    Ah, good old FOGSV - anti-shark fishing and pro-Marine Parks activists.Good mates with WACRA apparently.Here`s a little bit of history, from their Blue Swimmer newsletter No 20 - January 2012The hazard posed by shark fishing is totally unnecessary, not to mention illegal, and we will be actively seeking far greater compliance monitoring.The Friends of Gulf St Vincent urge anyone with good reason to think that shark fishing is occurring from near shore to notify PIRSA Fisheries immediately...The shark tackle restrictions were introduced on 14 Feb 2012.I`d trust this mob as far as I could throw them...from a letter to Caica in April 2011The Friends of Gulf St Vincent join with other organisations and individuals to support fully the South Australian Government’s proposed Marine Sanctuaries.We are fortunate in South Australia to have an active and dedicated marine research community and have confidence that world class science underpins the choice of localities for protection.Despite long term management of fisheries in South Australia there is known to be an alarming decline in the status of several commercial species. Recreational fishing contributes to this decline and we must acknowledge that this will not change without action.

    http://friendsofgulfstvincent.org.au/2013/04/rare-magpie-fiddler-ray/Given point 4 of this webpage I will not be reporting any catches for said species. Just as many other rec fishers don't these days.Sorry that science has to suffer again, but there are too many in society that just want to stab rec fishers in the back!Perhaps you can get the scientists to address the political side with government first?TB

    Schneider suits what you are using it for, it tolerates that type of punishment the most. The other brands are worse for abrasions as their properties dont stand up to the test of reefs and rocks. IMO softer leaders cut easier once minimally frayed.Try upping the Schneider maybe 100lb Good luck

    yea well, i rekon greedy boat fishos want the whole sea all to themselves.Months ago they were spewin about the marine parks ntz, now they dont want a jetty open for the public to fish off.Look at all the areas around the port that are now imposable to get to these days. Giles is hardly ever open , wallaroo to is mostly closed too . Maybe they should ban fishing off boats! :woohoo:

    Just another coincidence yay? Weed has never piled up there in my 35 years of fishin the area like it has since that March storm, now it is a regular thing it appears. Yes it used to pile up at Largs ,wasn't that due to the sewerage works that killed of sea grass beds the sizes of many AAMI stadiums I recall being said by Govt scientist ten or so years ago. Same shit different spot. My garden veggies boomed with desal water over summer.

    The only reason people try and break the rules is when they know they can get away with it, so it's definitely a compliance problem bought about by a lack of enforcement.It all comes down to how much the respective states Gumberments value recreational fishing. The fact that QLD does without the need for an RFL speaks volumes and i mention that in an old thread on the issue.WA is also in the process of A) deploying a number of concrete structures and still to be released-the most comprehensive study/survey of it's kind in WA looking into recreational angling.WAs licensing system is way more convoluted than it needs to be. "What fostering of angling can you point to in recent times ?"None really now you mention it.From WA fisheries"Artificial reef expertise in AsiaCountries such as China, Japan and Korea have been constructing and installing artificial reefs for more than 100 years.In north Asia, artificial reefs have been proven, in some cases, to be successful in increasing fish stocks up to 12 times the abundance expected on a natural reef.Building on this success, countries such as Korea have invested millions of dollars in large-scale artificial reef projects to enhance fish production and increase commercial catch volumes.Our Director General, Stuart Smith, lead a delegation to South Korea and China in 2011 to learn from these countries’ expertise and experience in developing artificial reefs.We subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding with both the Korea Fisheries Resource Agency and the People’s Republic of China to share information on developing artificial reefs and sustainable fisheries management. "

    This is where the politically driven decisions of PIRSA`s masters will come back to haunt them.A brilliant manifestation of political knee-jerk stupid rule outcomes generating, ahem, unintended consequences...I`m standing by for a finessing of the rules down to prohibition during daylight hours of "wire trace or non-homogeneous monofilament line" etc.Followed by another workaround...followed by another loophole found... Gail et al - this is what happens when you bow to special-interest yuppie latte-set group-lobbying by people whose sensibilities are offended by someone daring to have a line in the water.If the terminal tackle actually used was as advised in the above posts - then, regardless of one`s personal opinions of the pastime, regardless of whether it was intentional or not, I must acknowledge that (arguably) a group of individuals have made a rather profound socio-political statement...

    People are so stupid! These sharks are here and in this close all the time this is where they drop their pups, they are there regardless if people are fishing for them or not! The ban is a crock of .......... These blokes are just putting baits in their path of where they swim! It's probly safer that the shark is eating a dead bait rather than a person foot anyway! Not that bronzies really attack people! Then the shark is scared shitless that it's just been caught and piss bolts away from the beach and swimmers so therefore it's probably safer they are being caught dnd realesed !

    @urhookedfish
    No need to have a "catch and release" policy, there will be plenty of sanctuary zones soon enough.Don't forget there will be heaps of big fish swimming around South Australia because of all the "Flow Over" – rich life from sanctuary zones will have a spill over effect into the broader ocean environment. (Conservationists have repeatedly stated this benefit). The Greens, Divers etc pushing Conservation will have plenty of other areas where they can go and where we can't fish and extract.I would rather see a user pay as you go turnstile system implemented on this jetty, 10 bucks would be quite reasonable and it would pay the maintenance bill over time.It would be a fantastic jetty for recreational fishers.Keep the divers away we don't catch leafy sea dragons but perhaps we could allow conservationists in as long as they pay so they can observe some of the fish we catch. lol.
