Rays Outdoors and BCF have a Shimano combo of a Solstace reel with a Catana rod for $99 which is a great budget setup. My first combo that I bought was similar to this with the Catana rod and it has lasted me four years so far. Also BCF have a Shimano Sienna and Sonic pro combo for $69 which is a very good budget combo. The Siennas are great little reels with 4 ball bearings and are smooth to use.Other than that have a look at some Ugly stick combos that are in catalogues.

I like to use my kayak in the stretch between south road and the new rail bridge. There are several places to launch, perry's bend, a little car park next to the old rail bridge that is now a bike path and another little parking area just downstream from the new rail bridge are a few. Google maps is your friend. ;)As far as lures, any smallish soft plastic on an appropriately sized jighead will work, as will small to medium hard bodies either cast and retrieved or trolled behind the yak.

Sorry I'm not giving away secret spots or anything but you would be safe anywhere from salt fleet bridge to the mouth. You can launch at the aquatics club right next to salt fleet bridge. For plastics choices I'd say zman 2.5 grubs in motor oil. I have caught bream and salmon trout on them. I would like to help with mulloway lures but I havnt caught one yet I might even take my yak out friday so might see you down thereGood luck :f

I've seen pics of mullies caught on blades from the lake. But I would recommend a squidgy sp for mullies. The new paddle tail squidgy looks really good and I have seen more pics with mullies caught on em. Good luck!

Yeah mate, natural colours and styles are a positive but don't discount a few 'out there' lures. For soft plastics I prefer squidgy lobbies, wrigglers, Zman grubs; as I've had success on them previously. There are plenty of other plastics that work. For hardbodies I use the high end lures such as Bassday, DUO, Luckycraft, Ecogear, etc.

A kayak can get you into all the little nooks and crannies of those tidal creeks, a good thing. For bream I use 4lb fluorocarbon leader either tied straight to a size 2-2/0 hook depending on bait size, or a lure such as a plastic, vibe or hardbody. I favour baits like prawns and fresh bloodworms but don't discount gents either. In regards to lures, mixing up retrieves is a good idea. Can be slow rolled, slow and twitched, fast burn, etc. lots of variety until you find success. The bigger bream are not big because they're silly; they're very wise so it pays to make sure everything looks natural to tempt them.

I was down that way from Sat-Mon. fished the Normanville beach and then Bungala river for a dount saturday. on sunday i got dad to drop me off at second valley to try redeem my performance from the day before, the first 4 hours caught ziltch then i fished a patch of weed with a paternoster and was into a small weedy whiting with an outstanding green colours through it. then a puffer after him caught a few horseshoes leatheries and a few zebra fish all released unharmed. good fun being out of the house and wetting a line

Yeah, similar beach to carrcikalinga just around the corner and I've caught some nice 50cm+ flathead in about a foot of water on a lure there. Would say it'd be the usual bunch, with a chance for something toothy out further.

There's a decent river called the Bungala River which holds some pretty good bream! Fish behind the caravan park and you'll get some awesome bream.

Braid won't grip the spool at all, you either need mono backing or tape or one of the newer spools with rubber grip stuff, even when you're only fishing for small species.
