I have just set my self up with a 700c alvey and a 12 foot alvey rod to match ,may not be everyones choice but i figure they make the reels so why not get one of there rods ,i also have a couple of 500c reels on a 9 foot rod that i use for smaller stuff of the beach ,i cant be bothered with trying to cast a overhead ,tried to many birdsnests ,just practice i suppose but as pauly said more parts to bugger up alveys are tough as and easy to look after ,even got one in my boat .

While we are on the subject jack here is something you might want to knock up ,it is made from 6mm checker plate and is about 300mm square ,if you remember the old timber plate they would isseu you with for the 110 landys well this is a up market version of the jacking plate ,cant change a tyre if you jack keeps sinking into the sand or mud ,this will provide a good base for a scissor or even a high lift jack, i carry this as well in my kit all the time cost next to nothing to make and wil save you a lot of greif .

I concure with ranger ,now i must admit i havent been down this year but the last time i did the person in front of me in a landcruiser didnt let there tyres down and got bogged before they even got to the hill ,i let my tyres down in the carpark to 18psi and just floated over the sand i also carry a snatch strap, shackles and a broad mouth shovel just in case and in the future i will get some max trax ,also if people see that you are prepared they are more likely to help and say just bad luck ,wheras people who just charge across with no recovery gear deserve what they get ,i was there when the murray mouth opened again and the ammount of so called 4wd ers who came down was amazing not to many let there tyers down and it chews the shit out of the sand as they power through it ,in your case i would either leive the car in the carpark and walk or go north young man anyway your call good hunting.

as Ranger said, very accurate but may not be worth your trouble once you master the spin gear.I saw some in at the SFS the other day, first time i've seen them about for a bit. They operate without a roller bearing and usually just retrieve the line over a pin so this can lead to a bit of line twist however the ones i used would be 20 odd years old now so things may have changed. cheers brenton

Many, many years ago, the family used to use nothing else but Zebco closed face reels for chasing barra up in FNQ. As Ranger said, they are easy to cast accurately and relatively inexpensive and the Zebcos were pretty well bulletproof. I'm not sure if they're still distributed in Australia, but it looks like you can buy them online at Cabela's.Here's a link to the Zebco site in the States:http://www.zebco.com/Check out the "Interactive 2013 New Products Guide" to see the range they have available over there. If you want to read some interesting stuff about the company and how it got its name, click on the "About Zebco" button.Cheersaf

Easy to cast accurately and inexpensive, but they do have pretty crap drag systems. These reels were once quite popular, but rarely used these days. The Daiwa Gold was about the pick of the bunch.I keep one here myself for the novelty, but it's been in mothballs for many a year.

Pretty sure at the trolling speed you want to do with a paravane makes it dive around 7-8 m deep so you can't troll too shallow I usually won't go lower than 10 m deep with a paravane plus I've never had one on a rod they have too much weight/drag/pull or watever while trolling so I've only had them on handlines, then tie off to your rear cleats and sit and wait for the paravane to pop up!! Easy

Man, I think Snook away from rocks and jetties and that is about thinking outside the box.You can go trolling around in the hopes of discovering a school, this works. For a "make them come to you" session, here's what I find works;Get yourself into Tommie and Gar mode! Nice surface slick of oil and grain. Then as miraculously happens, the tommies & or Gar appear outta nowhere. Sometimes even slimey macks or whatever. This is fun fishing in itself right, unwieghted or floating gents and yer into a good bread n butter sesh.Stick a big rod down cos wherever this action is goin on, you never know if a snapper or 10 are close by a squid jig on a handline ready to go too if a squadron of Squidlies Cruz through!!!!This is the set up that once established and underway is going to produce SNOOK! Many people won't even notice them unless they pull in half a gar or they are really fired up and start getting airborne :woohoo: So when all is going well, grab yer pre rigged soft plastics rod with a 4" minnow and work it at the back and edges of the burley hungry Tommie n Gar......SMASH! THUD! JESUS those snook hit a lure hard!!!! My old man uses a very fine wire trace to avoid getting SNOOKED too frequently, but man they are fun what ever way you go.I find them the hardest fish to land.... They get boatside and are then absolute bastards for chomping through leader hahaha! GOTTA LOVE THOSE SNOOOOOOK!

RECENTLY I WAS DOWN AT GLEESONS LANDING ON A FISHING TRIP AND WAS SHOCKED AND DISGUSTED TO SEE THAT SOMEONE HAD DISCARDED A DAMAGED PILE OF TENT POLES AND A BROCKEN FOLD UP CHAIR ON THE FORDUNE OF THE BEACH. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO FATHOM HOW SOMEONE COULD BE SO THOUGHTLESS AND SO LAZY AS TO DO THIS. ALSO CONSIDERING WHAT HAS BEEN GOING IN RECENT YEARS WITH RESTRICTED ACCESS TO BEACHES AND MARINE PARKS WHAT WAS THIS PERSON THINKING OR NOT. I IMPLORE EVERY ONE, FISHOS, CAMPERS, SURFERS AND ALL THOSE THAT ENJOY OUR GREAT OUTDOOR PLACES, TAKE OUT WHATEVER YOU BRING IN. DONT LEAVE OLD BAIT BAGS, TACKLE AND CAMPING GEAR, LEAVE ONLY YOUR FOOTPRINTS. IF WE DON’T WE WILL DEFINITELY LOSE ACCESS. THINK OF OTHERS THAT MAY BE THERE AFTER, DON’T LEAVE THE PLACE IN A MESS. LASTLY TO THE PERSON THAT LEFT THIS MESS, PLEASE GO CLEAN UP YOUR RUBBISH, IN MY OPINION YOU DON’T DESERVE THE PRIVELEDGE OF PLACES LIKE GLEESONS. DON’T RUIN IT FOR EVERYONE ELSE. MY SAY

Hi mate i launch at sullies and also occasionally seacliff by myself ,havent had a problem in fact if i have been in a bit of bother people have only been to quick to help me ,never thought about people ripping stuff of the baot while i parked the car ,as protac said do all the stuff in the rigging area and after of the trailer pull to the end of the pontoon ,how many times have you seen people launch tie of at the front and stuff around getting biminis up rods in place all while others have to wait ,if unsure mate go to the ramp and watch others that is what i did ,early in the morning most ramps can be launched from but after i say about 8/9 o"clock i would probably use the launch ramp only as the early starters will be coming in good luck.

To beat the puffers you need a pair of pointy nose pliers and a hammer. The pointy nose pliers are used to shake the puffers of your hook once caught and the hammer is used to knock the puffer on the head. Its a case of natural attrician. Persevere long enough and and you will win.
