wedgetail 0
This isn't a go at anyone in particular but a general observation I went down to my local Jetty the other night got there about 8pm walked the whole length of it and counted 90 legal single hoop crab nets tied off on both sides of the Jetty. there were around 12 rod and line fisherman squeezed in amoungst the crabbers . So I didn't bother unpacking my gear and went home. (Putting on flame proof suit) I think its about time we banned the use of these nets. 3 double hooped nets is fine per fisherman 10 single is just plane ludicrous what do you think fellas. smokeykebab 175
i never even knew you can use 10 single hoop nets per person i always just thought it was 3 per person no matter what net. but 10 is ridiculous having that amount of nets in 1 small space won't give you more of a catch of crabs. should just be 3 per person no matter what kind of net it is. wedgetail 0
No mate just ban the use of single hoop nets saves on the amount of berly or bait in the water as well
talbo 0
But then if it ain't crab nets it's bloody squid teasers on handlines. Hardly anyone takes any real notice of their handline and allow them to drift into the path of everyone else. There's often an elderly man at Brighton jetty that will use 6-8 rods and usually around 10 handlines!! piratepom 3,197
I stopped fishing off metro jetties years ago because I got fed up with the crowds, all the nets/lines and the mess that usually gets left behind. I tend only to fish off the rocks (lots of choice) around North Haven when fishing land based.
chuckemback 0
10 single hoop nets imo is way to many since anglers are only allowed 2 rods per person. Think i asked pirsa years ago but seems like they dgad.

Tonka 1
Maybe the Honourable Law-Makers should look at rushing in new laws controlling the size of nets off metro jetties ??To something more appropriate ?? That amount of nets does sound a bit overboard to me.. At least set a sensible limit.
Boyington214 0
Personally I see no difference between single hoop or double hoop nets. So, why is it that a person can use 10 single hoop nets but 3 double hoops is the limit. Should be 3 nets end of story. And yeah, that 'elderly gent' down at Brighton should be reported. I'm sure he isn't the only one too.
yorke_angler 0
Largs or Semi Im guessing? From PIRSA:"fishing for crab: Up to 10 hoop nets if no other device (including rod and handline) is being used Up to 3 hoop nets if other fishing gear (including rod and handline is being used "So yeh 10 is legal if crabbing is all your doing. I think this is per person too which is crazy imo
Chief 706
Same happens in the river when the yabbies are running 3 guys in a boat 30 nets stretched out 10 metres apart covers a lot of area Makes it hard to find a place to yabbie if ya dont get up early enough

Kingsley 19
then maybe this old guy is using 12/0s and wire trace during the day...... ;)
phear 0
it is rediculous about the rule..gotta agree that that amount of crab nets sure attracts sharks more than a dead snook or squid etc hanging under a balloon...i think i know who u mean at brighton he has also been done by fisheries for taking undersized fish and crabs but he just goes back and does the same thing the next day... afishyfish 4
Thats it, Im buying single hoopers now, then I can have 10 hanging off the quinny   ( not really )
phear 0
its bad enough having 3 on the boat let alone 10 lol
Guest
When i was a kid dad always used 10 crab nets out of the boat. He would set them in a line about 50 metres apart and idle along them. By the time youd pull the tenth net it was about 15 minutes later and the first one was ready to be pulled.Given space restrictions on a jetty perhaps the limit should only be 5 but then that discriminates against land based crab netters. I dont have a problem with this number still being used from aboat. we are trying to get our kids away from tv computer games and out side Fishing is a healthy out door recreation we all have to learn to share the space available and cutting down on single hoop crab nets is one way of doing this . afishyfish 4
I understand your logic on the area issue etc WT, but Im not sure why boaties should be allowed to use more than LB crabbers
wedgetail 0
my focus is the land based congestion there is a lot more room in the sea, same way the Boaties are exempt from the new shark reg's as long as you are 500 mts of shore you can use what you want. moppa 1
last year i rang fisheries and was told it is legal to take 9 mates with you in a boat and use 10 single hoop nets each as long as no other fishing gear is used. but you are only allowed the 3 person limit. strange but true
