I've gone from cooking whole crab to backing them (removing shell and guts/lungs) before cooking.

Way cleaner process and drops cook time by 1 min.

7min after return to boil and mandatory plunge in iced seawater to set meat as Jackmac said👍

I do the same Greg , but I steam my crabs , then on ice , way better flavour , and no flavour lost in the water .

So if you had a day to collect bait (and I do today), where would you go?

I'm heading out in the morning and need bait but don't want to pay nearly $20 for a tiny bag of cockles - and it is tiny.

I gather ghost shrimp / nippers are mostly great yellowfin bait, but are they any good for KGs? Could collect some this arvo and they'd be OK in the morning.

A lot of KGW , I have caught over Moonta way , have had prawns in there guts , I always see what is inside a fishes belly , to help give you an idea of there eating habits , some days Pilchard will send them off as well  . I found that a finely cut up pilchard will keep the school around . The last hot bite we had , all big fish , had pilchard in there guts , and biggest 50cm , my PB

KGW like KGW flesh.... Ive had great success with trevally meat as well... and theres lots of pipies exposed on the sand flats at the moment... They are just sitting on top.. Thousands where I was yesterday. Might be worth a trip for you to gather some..

My old man used to gather them, open and lightly salt them, then freeze... He always did well with the KGW..

I made a mistake in the fish count one day and was one over the limit bye one KGW , they were in a hot bite and all big fish , they were all followed to the boat by large Snook , so I took a strip off of the smallest KGW to see if I could score a Snook , no I scored a 46cm KGW , so yeah Mike I believe ya .

Hey - are you wedded to Shimano? I bought a samaki which Ive been using on the sort of fishing youve just come back from and its awesome. It looks like a stick but it is full of power. Same sort of rod I pulled the monster Samson up on (mind you - I couldnt lift the rod off the gunnel for the first few moments).

Hamo what Samaki have  you got ? I have the 10-17lb and feels very nice , yet to hook anything over 6kg .

I'm hoping once the weather settles down I'll be back in a river chasing trout, I'm not pushing myself this early in the season like I normally do..So there's no trout fishing for me yet, I had an appointment this afternoon to be assessed to see how soon I can see a orthopedic surgeon for hip replacements & lower back (L3,L4 & L5 discs) surgery.. Have been given the okay for a visit to the orthopedic surgeon for the hips which will be around twelve months time. As for the back, well that's going to be assessed another time down the track to see another surgeon.. Not in a hurry for the back surgery as they said it may result in three discs being removed & steel rods inserted plus a twelve month recovery.. I'll be trying to hold off on that operation for sure.. I'll just have to be more selective where I fish in a river this season, trouble is the easy to get to waters never hold trout.. My doctor is finally back from overseas so I'll be paying him a few visits for a dose of injections again...
There was a nice dumping of snow overnight on Black Bluff with more forecast, very clear skies up this was tonight too.. more likely a heavy frost than snow here at this stage.
Here's a photo I took this morning from the back yard, I'd sooner it had been a few photos of some trout..😀😃

    cheers
    Adrian

Love the picture , but feel for your pain as I have the same problem with L3,L4,and L5  with Sciatica ,and is very painful, after a failed Lamonectomy  ( cant spell check ) and many other procedures ,I was implanted with a Dorsal Column Simulator into the spine ,not fun , so I hope you go well , as bad backs rule your life CHEERS and good luck Matey .

The bloke I went with was a Parks'n'Wildlife ranger at Chillagoe for 15 years and used to chase them in the Walsh River. He told of very large waterholes there. I've never been out that way.

Worth a look some beautiful water holes to fish .

  9. That is some good size fish , when camping on Gordonvale river just out of Cairns , some 30 years ago we would use a clear bubble float , with a metre like trace just using bread as bait , caught some nice fish but all around 25..30 cm good fun on a light set up , we caught bigger models up at Chillagoe QLD ,in some water holes we stumbled across great fun cheers .  great read .

Yeah before the sorting process I was congratulating my self on how well prepared I was

I had my rubber gloves on - I'd already dug a 2ft pit for the scraps - I had the hose ready to rinse the maggots in a sieve - I had the bran all ready in there storage container

My plans of a smooth operation flew out the window when the stench set it - from then on it was a mixture of panic and rash decisions😉

Trying to pry open the head, to get all the maggots out, unleashed a smell worse than Satan's bung hole and thats when I started to panic - after that I was cutting my losses and trying to get the stench underground - collecting the maggots became a secondary concern😉

Hey just a thought , put all of your fish frames , in chicken wire , like in a roll , frames in chicken wire ,roll the chicken wire up , like a tube , when they have been blown , wrap in news paper  , and bury , take out and shake the maggots out …...EASY , most of the fish stays in the mesh , shake , shake and put the SH&t in the neighbours   bin . not Rocket science ……….…………. and you don't need a Vernier, to measure , fish don't go on size ……..of maggots …….? and the science that goes into …….. maybe catching F%^k all .

  11. I bought a 4 piece travel rod 17-24 pound , light as and love it , $27 delivered to my door , and matched it with a 3000 reel , CAPICI ,13+ball bearings spinning reel $32 delivered to my door , loaded with Mongrel 15lb braid .

Worked a treat on the salmon , and is kept in my boot with a handle full of lures ,just in case a school is spotted while driving .

Both rod and reel have been fine , and love the set up myself cheers
